Chapter 52: Future Brother-In-Law
Saturday finally arrived.
Today was the first time Abigail had requested a morning shift since she started working at Crimson Leaf Café, which made Lana suspicious.
When Abigail arrived at the café, Lana couldn’t help but pester her about where she was going. She had no choice but to explain that she wanted to visit her grandma and would stay until Monday. Thankfully, her innocent boss believed her.
Abigail’s morning shift went smoothly, and she didn’t have to explain anything to Lana about Sawyer.
Not long after, her work hours ended.
She felt excited when she received a text from Sawyer informing her that he had arrived and parked in the building next door.
Thrilled about meeting Sawyer, Abigail said goodbye to Erica before entering the staff room to grab her bag.
Carrying only her usual backpack, Abigail packed simple clothes for a two-night, three-day stay in the mountains. Sawyer hadn’t given her any clues about what to wear, and she hoped she wouldn’t choose the wrong outfit.
When Abigail returned to the front counter, she was surprised to find only Erica with a server there—they were talking in the corner.
"Erica, where’s Boss Lana?" Abigail asked, worried about leaving the café with Lana nowhere in sight. Earlier, she hadn’t seen Lana in her office either.
"Boss Lana? She went outside to the bank in the building next door," Erica replied as she approached Abigail. "Are you heading to Orange Town now?"
"Yes. Is it okay if I leave now?" Abigail was concerned about customers coming in without Lana there.
"It is fine, Sister Abigail. Don’t worry—Boss Lana will be back in a few minutes. It is not a busy time right now, so I can handle things," Erica reassured her. "You should go now, or you’ll miss your train."
Abigail could only nod slightly while smiling at Erica for a moment before leaving the café. She felt terrible hearing Erica’s words because she had lied, telling them she was going to Orange Town to visit her grandma.
Relieved she no longer had to pretend, Abigail took a deep breath and walked out of the café.
She had purposely asked Sawyer to park his car in the next building, not wanting Lana and the others to see her enter his vehicle. It would be difficult to explain, especially to Lana, if they saw Sawyer was coming and picking her up again.
When Abigail spotted Sawyer’s car, she quickened her pace. However, before she could reach the vehicle, she saw Sawyer step out and walk to the passenger side, waiting for her.
Her smile widened, knowing what he intended to do—open the car door for her.
’Gosh! He really is a gentleman,’ she thought, adding another star to her heart as she felt impressed by his kindness.
She faintly smiled at him, "Please don’t trouble yourself to open the door for me, Sawyer. I could easily do it myself—" Her voice trailed off when a familiar voice called her name.
Instantly, Abigail felt like half of her soul had left her. ’My goodness! Is that Lana’s voice? Oh my God! Why is Lana here?’
Abigail turned to look in Lana’s direction and saw her walking toward them. She had been trying hard to keep Sawyer hidden from them, and now Lana was about to meet him. Nervousness rushed through her.
Hastily, Abigail turned back to Sawyer.
"Sawyer, please wait for me inside. I’ll explain later. Just a few more minutes, please." She felt terrible seeing the confusion in his expression.
"Alright, Abby. There’s no need to rush; I will patiently wait." Sawyer smiled at her before he returned to his car.
After watching Sawyer return to his car, Abigail turned back to Lana.
"Lana, what are you doing here?" Abigail asked casually, pretending nothing had happened. She stepped away from Sawyer’s car.
Lana didn’t answer Abigail’s question. Instead, her gaze shifted to the black SUV behind Abigail. She wanted to catch a glimpse of the man who had been talking to Abigail earlier, but he had already entered the car.
"Girl, so the man was the one who ordered coffee over the phone? Our future brother-in-law?" Lana curiously asked, refocusing her attention on Abigail. She had heard about the man from Erica and assumed he must be close to Abigail or perhaps her new boyfriend.
Abigail couldn’t help but laugh at Lana’s words. She adjusted her expression before responding casually.
"What future brother-in-law? I don’t even know him. He just asked me for directions, and I explained a bit to him earlier..." she explained.
"Girl, do you think I’m a kid? I could see how that man looked at you," Lana said, narrowing her eyes at Abigail. "He looked at you as if you were the only woman in the universe. Gosh, he is so gorgeous! And I think he is deeply in love with you, girl. I don’t know if he knows it, though."
Abigail, "..."
"Hahaha, Lana, you must be Supergirl; how could you analyze his gaze from this distance?" Abigail refused to fall for Lana’s teasing.
"You are indeed smart, girl," Lana chuckled. "Alright, just take care. Don’t fall asleep on the train, or you might miss the chance to meet a handsome CEO!"
"Geez, Lana... I don’t want a handsome CEO; you know how much of a jerk my ex was, right?" Abigail smiled and played along with the joke.
"Ah, you’re right! Yes, who needs a handsome CEO? We don’t need them all... Especially the type of men like your scum ex!"
"Well, I just want a kind and trustworthy man. If he happens to be handsome and rich, I’ll just consider that a bonus." Abigail felt her face grow warm when a particular man appeared in her mind.
"Agree! Don’t forget me if that man has a friend," Lana giggled.
"Ugh, Boss Lana, you should head back to the café now; a few customers just entered."
"Damn! I forgot!" Lana turned her head toward the café. "Bye, Abigail! See you on Monday," she called out while rushing toward the entrance.
Abigail continued to watch Lana until she saw her enter the café, feeling amused and excited by their silly and random chat.
’Who needs a handsome CEO? I don’t need them. I just need... wait! Sawyer!’
Suddenly, she turned back to look at the black SUV.
’Gosh! I forget about Sawyer! How could I forget about him?’
