Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord-Chapter 172: Regret (4)
Chapter 172: Regret (4)
Eugene got what he needed seeing that the pair wasn’t so together on what occurred that unfortunate night. With the current tension between vampires and humans around the kingdom, Gabriel might find himself in hot water if he killed a vampire over lies from his wife.
Incidents like this ruined the other marriages with one vampire and human partner. The court would go on to say that vampires and humans shouldn’t mix yet it was the purebloods who created mixed-bloods.
"That is all I needed to know. I will visit your father to have a word with him and then I will get back to you about the final judgement. Please be mindful that you might have to come to me and your ex-wife might be there. If you feel you cannot be in the same space as her, I will make other arrangements," said Eugene.
"We can get along with Selene. Aside from what happened with Lucinda, we don’t have any reason to trouble Selene. Please do what you must to find out what happened to Lucinda. I am unable to rest well at night because her attackers still roam free," Cassandra said, reaching out to touch Eugene.
Eugene thought Cassandra should worry about herself since Gabriel looked like he was going to snap at any second. As much as Eugene would like to help her, it wasn’t his business to get into the arguments of married couples.
They needed to figure this out themselves and if more truth about what happened that night came out then it was better for him.
So far, Eugene believed that Gabriel unfairly killed a vampire without a good reason. The proof was Gabriel’s reaction to what Cassandra said.
"I must leave," Eugene announced.
Cassandra walked to the door to see Eugene off. "Please be safe on your way back."
Gabriel stood in the same spot, waiting patiently for Eugene to leave their home. He couldn’t have Eugene hear anything more to place Elsie’s death as a wrongful act. The next time Eugene came, they would get their stories straight but first, there was something to address.
Cassandra returned to Gabriel’s side and assumed from his expression that he was angry a guard came asking about a maid who didn’t matter. "I’m sure this will all be over soon."
"You lied," Gabriel said.
"What? I didn’t lie to the guard," Cassandra replied, once again keeping her distance from Gabriel. "I fail to believe there isn’t something I did earlier since you have come home and acted strange to me. Please tell me the truth."
"Either you lied to me or you lied to that guard. Regardless of the answer, you shouldn’t have lied. Selene’s other maid is still alive. He will go to her to question what took place that night. I didn’t know about the choking and I am sure she will say she didn’t see it happen," said Gabriel.
Gabriel wanted to grab Cassandra’s shoulders to shake her. Why couldn’t she have just said what happened?
Cassandra wanted to laugh. Here she was adding to the story so the kill would be justified yet he couldn’t keep quiet in the moment to not appear suspicious.
How did she end up with this man?
Just thinking about who the church picked to use and stuck her with further upset Cassandra. If she had to put up with being married to a vampire then it should be someone who wouldn’t anger her like this.
"I saw her reach out to choke me but moved when she heard you coming," Cassandra said, sticking to the story instead of revealing it was a lie.
Gabriel shouldn’t care that it was a lie. He went on and on about the maid deserving it and wasn’t he upset about Selene harming his mother? He should do everything he could to point Selene’s former maid as the one in the wrong.
"I am starting to notice that your story never seems to remain the same. You don’t need to lie, Cassandra. She was in the wrong to attack you. You should have told me that you called her to speak. I looked like a fool back then for claiming that wasn’t true," Gabriel said, his anger growing with each word.
"You looked a fool to who? Her other maid who doesn’t matter? Or to Selene? Don’t tell me that you care what her opinion of you is," Cassandra said, annoyed Selene was still on his mind.
Cassandra continued to say, "The other maid wasn’t there for everything that happened and I am telling you the truth that she tried to choke me. You came in so fast and killed her after I only got out that she slapped me. Then Selene came before I got to tell you what else happened."
Cassandra lowered her head, wiping at her eyes as she forced herself to cry. She knew Gabriel all too well so she could get around this for now. "You were so focused on Selene saying she was leaving that I didn’t get to tell you everything else. I was so scared and all I wanted was your attention but how could I speak up when you were losing your wife?"
Gabriel partially regretted how he spoke to Cassandra since what she said made sense. After Selene arrived and said she was leaving, he didn’t pay much attention to what Cassandra wanted to say. Even after Selene left instead of comforting Cassandra, he had waited for Selene to return since he knew she had no one to turn to.
Gabriel wanted to believe Cassandra but now, he couldn’t get Elsie’s expression out of his mind. She did look confused by Cassandra’s accusations and he couldn’t forget the fear when he approached her to take her life.
Something was off here but Cassandra wasn’t one to go that far. She was a sweet woman who was always on the verge of tears when he raised his voice or was simply angry with her.
Gabriel closed the space between them to embrace Cassandra. "I am too hard on you. Perhaps I didn’t handle that night well and I am only realising it now. Please forgive me."
Cassandra gripped his shirt and rested her head against his chest. "I am not angry with you. Just tell me what I have done to upset you. You did not meet my eyes when you returned home."
"It’s not you, it’s trouble in the palace. It would greatly benefit me if instead of staying home, you were to meet with others like you with some status. You must make friends with people who will be of some use to you. Of some use to me. Along with that, you will need to start acting like the lady of this house," said Gabriel.
He could not have Cassandra not doing anything while he was trying to make something of them.
"I know it is big shoes to fill but you can do it."
Cassandra frowned. Each time he said this, it felt like he saw Selene as better than her. Wasn’t he the one who said Selene wasn’t doing a good job when she was here? Why now were Selene’s shoes big to fill?
Cassandra decided to speed up her plans before Gabriel started to realise he was still in love with Selene.
