Chapter 188: Meeting with friends (4)

"I see. Well, the king has more than one war to concern himself about. I always knew the two of you were going to end up fighting. I honestly thought it would have happened after his marriage to Vivienne. Sorry," Henry apologised since it was wrong to mention that while Selene was around.

Xavier was once again annoyed by someone misunderstanding his past relationship with Vivienne. He chose not to explain once again that Vivienne getting married didn’t affect him and decided to see what Selene was up to.

"I feel like I just made a mistake to set our friendship back a little. What can I do to push it forward?" Henry asked as he followed Xavier.

"Nothing. You have a habit of saying the wrong thing at times and I have accepted it. Where are our wives?" Xavier asked, more interested in Selene’s location than what Henry said. "I am starting to be concerned."

"Concerned?" Henry laughed but then he thought of what Francesca might want to give Selene. "Yes, you should be concerned. I hear them over here."

"You know," Henry continued to say. "If Francesca’s gifts are too much, I can have her stop."

"Then our friendship would be ruined. I don’t mind what your wife sends and while Selene might be shy about it, she does cherish what Francesca gives her. I know what the queen has said regarding anyone who befriends my wife. If the queen troubles your wife, let me know," said Xavier.

Henry laughed since he wouldn’t have to go to Xavier for that. If Vivienne kept poking at Francesca then Henry would get to Vivienne before Xavier. He waited a long time for it.

"I recall a time when you weren’t interested in marriage or speaking to anyone in general. Now look at you. Look at me," Henry said since he wasn’t much different. "Those two stumbled into our lives and changed up our plans. I think they time their entrances."

"Not for Selene," Xavier replied.

In their case, Xavier thought he was the one who made the grand entrance by deciding to show up at Selene’s celebration party for Gabriel. He was the one who stumbled into her life years later.

Hours later after enjoying themselves in the company of Francesca and Henry, Selene and Xavier set off for home before it got too late.

Selene rested her head on Xavier’s shoulder, trying to get some sleep before they returned to the estate.

Xavier kept watch for who they passed by on the way back. The roads were busy with vampires who waited for night to go around the town. He spotted a few humans who appeared in a rush to make it home but so far, there weren’t any threats.

Xavier kept his arm around Selene so she wouldn’t fall. He knew she wanted to go home and look over what the maids had done but he thought it was best she just went straight to bed.

He appreciated Francesca and Henry more since they were able to show Selene a good time, helping her to forget everything that was on her mind and have her enjoy the moment. He welcomed Francesca to visit the estate at any time since he now had to plan how he would get rid of Darius and would be away from Selene for some days.

"Sorry," Selene apologised after her head hit Xavier’s shoulder. She moved away from him to no longer use his shoulder.

"I believe you owe me a kiss for this apology but I will get it later," said Xavier.

Selene forgot about that agreement. It was why she held off apologising to him. "I forgot about that. I must stay awake or I will give in to wanting to sleep when we reach the estate."

"You can go to bed. Harold and Gertrude have never failed to look after the estate when I am awake. I do not expect you to take part in their jobs and look over what has to be done in the estate every day. There is much on your mind these days so leave that work to the butler and head maid," Xavier suggested.

"I don’t overwork myself. I simply like seeing that it is all in order. It is the least they can see your wife doing. I will do a quick walk around and then go right to bed. So much for me being more active at night," Selene said, thinking back to her previous plans.

"It is better for you to be more active during the day. There is nothing aside from danger at night. We are close to the estate but you may rest your head on my shoulder or lap to get more rest. I will carry you out of the carriage," Xavier offered. fгeewebnovёl.com

Selene took the offer without any objections and once again laid her head on Xavier’s shoulder. "Francesca told me about a friend who was confined to her home after attacking humans. She says it was very unlike her friend and she suspects someone did something to this friend. I think it might not be wrong to think this is tied to the attacks."

Selene explained, "Vampires losing themselves and attacking humans is good motivation for war by driving fear into humans. What do you think?"

"I think of my aunt who had an outburst long ago which cost her fangs. She always argued that she didn’t know what came over her. It is possible whoever is behind this has been practising for years how to make us lose our minds over blood. I will have to speak to my aunt and look into this friend Francesa spoke of," said Xavier.

If this was true, they had more than just holy weapons to worry about.

"Francesca also mentioned feeling strange whenever she enters the palace. She thinks something there affects the women. Is it wrong to think the king might be the one behind this if it is true? I don’t know him well but I wouldn’t put it past him," Selene said since the king seemed to be such a disgusting man.

"I wouldn’t put it past him either. He always speaks of wanting everyone to be relaxed at the ball. As you have seen, the women he courts are sometimes married and those who show no interest in him, he finds another way to get them in his hands," Xavier replied.

Selene was concerned for the women working in the palace. "Are the maids in the palace safe with him around? He isn’t a man who takes no for an answer. He is not stopping while I am with you so I am concerned about the maids who have no one to protect them. He must go."

It was not safe for any woman who would have to enter the palace while Darius was around. Selene couldn’t fall asleep now that this was on her mind.

"More of the other families are starting to gather in the palace to vote Darius off so he will no longer be king. If they succeed, he will have a title like mine and live out of the palace. That won’t be enough to stop what he does" Xavier said since Darius would still think of himself as the king.

"And what if those women who have been approached by him go to court? Wouldn’t they be meant to do something about it?" Selene asked, having some hope.

Xavier shook his head. "Darius has most of the court under his command since if he is removed as king, they might lose their seats. Unfortunately, what he does with women isn’t a concern to them since some of them take part in it. I have killed a few for it but he simply fills their seat with another. As you said, he must go."
