Chapter 192: Working together (4)

"Today must be my lucky day. Nathaniel has been pulling on all kinds of strings to get you to talk with him and here you are coming to me willingly. Your father will be so jealous if he hears about this. Tell me what is so urgent," Camilla said, taking a seat.

"I want to speak about what made you lose your fangs-"

"No!" Camilla shook her head. "I don’t want to speak about it. How many times must I listen to all of you speak about how foolish my actions were? I have heard it far too many times. I don’t have any more patience to hear about it."

"I can’t recall a time I scolded you or made a mockery of it. I believe you when you say that something came over you. There are others like you starting to show up. Vampires who have attacked humans and now need to be confined to their homes. There is a woman I would like to help," said Xavier.

"So, what does that have to do with me? I have already lost my fangs. As you can see, they won’t grow back just because the truth is out," Camilla smiled so Xavier could see. "None of them gave me a chance before they ripped that from me and your father pushed for it all so I couldn’t challenge his place as father’s favourite."

Camilla never had any interest in being her father’s favourite since she knew what it came with. Nathaniel was so concerned about it that he was always plotting even against his siblings which cost him a bond he couldn’t get with anyone else.

"I want to know what you suspect was the cause. When you look back before that accident, what seemed strange? Who did you meet with before it happened? Tell me so I can find the culprit and clear your name. We must stop this from happening to others," Xavier said, hoping Camilla would have the heart to join. freēwēbηovel.c૦m

Camilla laughed. "Where were you years ago when I needed help? This would have sparked something within me then when I was desperate. I don’t have any interest in that, Xavier. They’ve already gotten to me so all I want now is for your father and all the others who let it happen to die."

"I was not around when they decided to punish you and it was not up to me to save you. This family who speaks of sticking together needed to protect you and they failed to do it. Finding the culprit cannot undo your punishment but it can help to stop making more of you. You can be the help you needed back then," said Xavier.

To convince her, Xavier added, "The person who messed with you is also responsible for your punishment. They targeted you."

"What a shame," Camilla said, standing up. "They might have taken my heart as well because I don’t care. I only want to see your father dead and then I will go back to rotting in the home they put me in. It’s just like them to only call me back because they want me to kill your wife."

Camilla continued, "I have thought about it just so you know. I thought about killing your father and then running to harm your wife so you can kill me. I’m sure you could find some way to do it. I know it makes me a terrible person but what keeps me here is waiting to get back at your father."

"You can have so much more," Xavier said.

"Oh, Xavier. Since when did you become this sweet? Is that woman changing your heart? Is she making you see the beauty of life? I liked you more when you didn’t care for anyone and went around killing who got in your way. Do not lose that side of you as then you will lose your spot as my favourite nephew," Camilla said, not wanting to be disappointed.

"I am your only nephew," Xavier reminded Camilla.

"Not for long since Ragnar is preparing to have many children. Since you won’t follow your father’s lead, Ragnar will want to swoop in to have his chance. They are both fools but I happen to like Ragnar more. He had some pity for me in the past and he tends to visit. You might have some competition as my favourite nephew," Camilla said, curious about what Xavier would do to keep his place.

"It doesn’t matter who comes next. I will always be better. You are better than this. You can help those women and I know you want to but you are stuck on dragging yourself around like this-"

"I cannot remember," Camilla interjected, her response honest. "I have searched for answers myself and found nothing. It has been years, Xavier. I have forgotten who I met with or what I drank. I have purposely forgotten because of what it made me become. You will have better luck going to help the others and I hope you will solve this."

Camilla didn’t want to waste Xavier’s time when she wasn’t in any state to help herself. She was focused on Nathaniel and didn’t have time for others.

"If I get some names, can I bring the list to you to see if there is anyone you know? That would be helpful for me to make connections."

Camilla nodded her head. "I can do that much. Now, could you please move on from it? I don’t like thinking about this. We should speak about your father’s newest plans to wake our grandfather. I didn’t understand at first why he didn’t want to wake our father but then I learned he is not welcome there anymore."

Camilla was curious to know if Nathaniel was no longer on their father’s good side.

Camilla showed a tiny space between her fingers and said, "I am this close to waking our father to let him see what has become of Nathaniel. Maybe my father would kill Nathaniel for the trouble he has caused or break his fangs."

"I would like to see my father drop dead as well but I have found other things to do with my time. I have a wife and a few people I like to be around while you go around grabbing the first man who can get your hands on then go back looking like this," Xavier said, disappointed in how Camilla was turning out.

Camilla looked down at her attire. "What’s wrong with how I look now? Why must you rub your happiness in my face? It’s not easy to find someone when you don’t have fangs or were you suggesting that I settle for a human who might see past me being a vampire and love me? Are you suggesting that crap?"

"No, you’re the one who came up with it. I don’t care who you love but it does bother me seeing you like this. I know what happened caused you to lose the man you were interested in marrying but there are many more vampires around the kingdom. When you act like this, it feels like my father won. We can’t have that," said Xavier.

Camilla smiled, enjoying how Xavier was trying to give her a wake-up call. He was the last person she thought it would come from but the one person who could convince her. "No, we can’t have that. Does your kindness now mean I am welcomed on your estate? I would like to meet your wife."

Xavier smiled, giving a false sense of hope. "No. I will have your head if you show up there."

"As I expected," Camilla laughed. "Allow me to clean up myself and search my memories for clues. Maybe I do remember something."
