Chapter 226: Mr. and Mrs. Beckett are at the office

Maxwell and Andrew ended up having a rather quiet morning. Maxwell didn’t tell his parents right away, and Andrew supported that decision. He did want Maxwell to tell them but so early in the morning? Maybe not the best decision.

It was a little strange to be back in the house, and being able to use most of his clothes was a nice gift. It was a little funny that the reason he couldn’t use his more favourite outfits was because Maxwell had been using them to make...a pile on the floor? Maxwell was so embarrassed whenever Andrew brought it up, and Andrew had no idea why.

It wasn’t a behaviour he had observed that his Mom had done, so it was something that was completely outside of his knowledge. It was also not in any of the conversations he had with the other omegas that he knew. Maybe it was a sensitive topic? Andrew didn’t know.

He’d basically done the same with Maxwell’s stuff, or he would have if he didn’t think Maxwell would get mad that his clothes were out of place.

With that being said, Andrew found that in the week that he had been gone, he’d gotten a bit bigger. His clothes were a little tight, and when Maxwell noticed this, he started laughing. Andrew hated that his Thomas had bought him a new wardrobe, and now he was going to have to spit in the face of that because none of it fit anymore. He was taller, and a little wider.

Andrew tried to cover it up, but ended up just wearing the same sweater and pant combo that he had worn yesterday, much to Maxwell’s humour.

Maxwell let Andrew drive the car in, instead of calling in a car to drive them there, and when they got there, they realised that it was a good thing that they hadn’t called Maxwell’s parents and let them know what was happening.

They were already there.

Mr. Newman was waiting anxiously in the lobby, and as soon as he saw Andrew and Maxwell walk in, a look of relief crossed his face, before his anxiousness came back. He moved towards them quickly, checking out the fact that the two of them were holding hands, and then stopping a few steps in front of them.

"Dr. Nice, Mr. Beckett, um, you both need to come up to your office, Mr. Beckett." He tried to say it quietly, but Maxwell frowned.

"Why would he need to come up as well?" Maxwell asked, and Mr. Newman glanced at Andrew, before turning back to Maxwell. He looked even more nervous.

"Your parents are here." Mr. Newman admitted, and Maxwell’s face frosted over.

"Well, that changes things, doesn’t it?" He muttered, before he glanced over at Andrew. "Are you alright with this?" He asked and Andrew sighed.

"I’m not about to let you go there alone, Maxwell. Let’s go." Andrew told the two of them, and Mr. Newman looked relieved. He gave them a slight smile, before he turned and began to lead the way to the elevators, and up to Maxwell’s office.

It was a quiet ride up, and most of Maxwell’s secretaries were already there, but also they looked quite nervous. Andrew could feel the tension in the air. Even Maxwell was nervous, and Andrew, who had been absent for a week and had only seen Luis, had no idea why. He had heard from Richard that Maxwell and Thomas had an altercation of sorts, but that was all he knew.

He tightened his hold on Maxwell’s hand, hoping that this was going to be an easy conversation, because this was tragically the best time to tell them about the issues Maxwell was going through as well. Maxwell glanced at him as they stood outside of his office doors, sighing as he gave Andrew a squeeze back before he opened the doors, not knocking.

His parents were seated, chatting to each other quietly before Maxwell opened the doors. As soon as he did, they both rose to their feet, staring at Andrew and Maxwell as they came in.

"So? Did you manage to fix everything?" Thomas asked, and Andrew was surprised. The doors weren’t even closed fully behind them yet. To air everything so pub-

"Mostly." Maxwell replied, raising their held hands. "I am at least allowed to do this, so I think there is some way to salvage it." He replied, his gaze fierce. Thomas slid his gaze towards Andrew, and Andrew straightened immediately. Luis beside him, frowned.

"Andrew, why are you wearing that? I assume you wore it yesterday, unless you wore the suit to work." Andrew’s cheeks warmed, and it was a strange feeling. He was caught between the curious confusion of Luis, and the hard stare of Maxwell’s father who had witnessed what his departure from Maxwell’s life had done to his son, and his company.

"Uh, well-" Andrew fumbled, a little awkward when Maxwell spoke up for him, laughter in his tone.

"Andrew has outgrown his old wardrobe. Again." Thomas’ face fell into a frown, and Andrew froze. Was he mad about that? Should he pay him back? He wasn’t sure what to do here.

"That’s upsetting. We’ll just send everything back and get it resized. Andrew will have to come in this time." Thomas said, surprising Andrew. Luis chuckled.

"We stopped by recently, so they should have his new size." She told her husband, and Thomas narrowed his gaze as he looked at Andrew, before he nodded.

"I thought that sweater looked familiar. It’s from the new launch, isn’t it?" Luis nodded, a grin on her face. She placed her hand on her husband’s shoulder and Thomas flinched.

"It is." She said warmly, before she turned to Andrew and Maxwell. "Andrew, there is no need to look so worried. We haven’t come to yell at you or anything of the sort. We just wanted to see how Maxwell was doing after giving us a big scare." Maxwell twitched, and Andrew knew that this was the perfect time to bring up the other, more recent scare that Maxwell had given Andrew last night. Andrew wanted to bring it up, but he would wait.

He wouldn’t make the same mistake he had made in the hospital.

"He got a full night’s rest last night, falling asleep after dinner. I think he’ll need a few more nights to catch up, but he should be back into full working order soon." Andrew told them, staring down at Maxwell with warmth in his gaze. It wasn’t a hard thing to do. It was normally very easy to love Maxwell.

Sometimes it got a little hard, but Maxwell was usually so loveable that he just took those times in stride. freēnovelkiss.com

"That’s good to hear. Anyone could tell you weren’t sleeping properly." Thomas’ lips turned up slightly. "It must be because Andrew is back, eh?" He said, trying to tease his son but Maxwell didn’t budge. His expression was still tight, still closed off and he closed his eyes. Thomas’ smile slowly turned into a frown, and he glanced between Andrew and Maxwell. "What’s wrong? Did something happen?" He asked, serious, and Luis’ face was also a mask of concern.

How Maxwell thought that his family hated him was something Andrew probably wouldn’t be able to understand, but he would support him through it. It was clear to Andrew that they were worried for him, but Maxwell might think something completely different.

Maxwell let out a shuddering breath, before he turned his gaze towards Andrew. Andrew smiled at him softly, offering support and Maxwell turned back to his parents.

"It’s...I think it’s time that I tell you why we got into such a large argument." Maxwell said, tugging Andrew over, before he paused. "Do you need to get to work right away?" He asked. It was clear that Maxwell didn’t want to do this alone, but he was coming back to his senses. He knew that while Andrew was still new, he was an important part of the research department. Andrew smiled.

"I’ll just ask Mr. Newman to let Richard know. I’ll be right back." Andrew told him and Maxwell nodded, releasing his hand and moving to sit across from his parents. Andrew rushed to the door.

When he opened it, Mr. Newman, who was sitting at his desk, looked up.

"Is there something you need, Dr. Nice?" He asked and Andrew nodded.

"Could you let Dr. Gates know that I am going to be a little late? We’re having a meeting." Mr. Newman nodded, picking up the phone next to him.

"Not a problem, Dr. Nice." He replied and Andrew grinned.

"Thanks, Mr. Newman." He closed the door, turning and joining the family sitting down. He took Maxwell’s hand in his own, offering him his support as Maxwell tried to tell them what happened. Maxwell’s grip on his hand was hard, nearly painful, but he didn’t say anything.

This had to be hard for him, and Andrew wanted to support him.

Thomas glanced between them, before settling his gaze on Maxwell. "So, you wanted to tell me about the origins of this argument that sent both of you spiraling?" He asked and Maxwell nodded.

"I do." Thomas sighed at Maxwell’s response before he sat back and gestured vaguely.

"Go ahead then. I’m all ears." Andrew could tell that Maxwell took that the wrong way, and Andrew wanted to laugh but held it in. They were speaking the same language, but he didn’t think Thomas knew that his words had such a deep impact on Maxwell. Andrew pressed his shoulder against Maxwell’s, giving him support. He could do this. Even if he couldn’t see how much his parents cared for him, Andrew did.

They wanted to know about the troubles their son faced.
