Chapter 227: Maxwell’s fears

"I hate Doctors." Maxwell exploded. It felt like he had been holding that in for forever, and Andrew watched him as he spoke. Thomas and Luis did seem surprised, but weren’t shocked by his words. "Specifically, omega Doctors. I don’t feel like other omegas, and I haven’t had that many similarities with other omegas most of my life. I’ve always been sensitive to pheromones, and I haven’t had strong desires like other omegas. My heats haven’t even always been as severe as other omegas, and so I get..." He took a deep breath. "I think I get rather anxious when I go in to see the Doctor. It’s why I’ve stopped doing so unless I need to." Andrew squeezed his hand and Maxwell glanced at him.

Maxwell’s face twisted slightly, a look of regret on his face as he squeezed Andrew’s hand back.

"Something happened during Ben’s wedding." That didn’t appear to be something that his parents thought would come out of Maxwell’s mouth. Their brains were firing, and it was his Mom who first came upon a certain idea. Andrew wanted to speak, but held back. This was Maxwell’s time.

"Are you-"

"I’m not pregnant." Maxwell cut off the thought quickly. He was shaking his head, and Andrew couldn’t see his eyes. "It’s too soon, and also, not something neither Andrew nor I want right now." He cleared his throat. "It’s...not as good as a pregnancy." Maxwell said, before he glanced at Andrew. "Can you?" Maxwell asked, and Andrew felt his heart warm. He nodded, giving him a soft smile. Both Thomas and Luis were staring at them in confusion. If it wasn’t a pregnancy, what was going on?

"During a moment where Maxwell and I took a break," Andrew started, "Maxwell and I were chatting before suddenly he went cold, turned and headed for the table that was in our room. He wouldn’t respond to words, touches, anything. This lasted for a few minutes, but was quite concerning. I recommended that Maxwell should go to the Doctor. In fact, I took him directly to Michael after he woke up from it." It seemed that the two of them were able to recall that that happened, and Luis was the first to speak up.

"That happened during the wedding? Why didn’t you say anything, Maxwell? Andrew? Even if you hadn’t said it in the moment, a few days after, or even the next morning would have been reasonable." She protested, upset, and Maxwell stared at them. Andrew could tell that he was having a hard time speaking, but he remained silent.

This was for Maxwell to say, Andrew just needed to support him.

"I...didn’t want to taint Amir and Ben’s big day, and I honestly didn’t think you’d care." Maxwell said. Andrew knew that as soon as Maxwell said the words that he regretted them. Part of it had to do with the immediate pain that was on his Mother’s face, but Maxwell swallowed, holding onto Andrew tightly.

Thomas went white as his wife covered her mouth, tears wetting her eyes.

"What do you mean that we wouldn’t care? There is no way in any world that would be true." Thomas let out a shaky exhale while Luis tried to keep herself together.

"Is this because I yelled at you recently?" Thomas asked, his voice hollow. "If I had known, I wouldn’t have-"

"It’s," Maxwell spoke up, halting Thomas’ words. Thomas shut his mouth immediately, letting Maxwell speak, looking like he’d just been told someone had died. "It’s not that reason. I just...I thought you guys only really tolerated me. You tried so hard to marry me off, and traditionally when an omega gets married off they kind of cut ties with their original family so..." Maxwell trailed off, looking uncomfortable. It was clear that Maxwell never wanted to have this conversation, but Andrew was proud of him for starting it. He deserved to know how much his parents actually cared about them, and they deserved to know that Maxwell had these kinds of feelings brewing inside of him.

"Amir and Rue have never been cut off from their families, Maxwell. Why would you think that?" Luis asked, her voice cracking. She covered her mouth, unable to hide how her lips and hands were shaking. Thomas wrapped an arm around her shoulder, pulling her closer. Maxwell shrugged.

"Of course it would be different. You’d be shipping me off to another family if I married any of the people who you wanted me to. They also...they also made it clear that was their intention as well." Maxwell said, clearing his throat. "At least the early ones did, when I was younger and had nothing to my own personal name." They looked genuinely horrified to hear the words from his mouth.

"Why didn’t you say anything? Why didn’t you tell us? That wasn’t-we weren’t chasing you out of the family, Maxwell!" Thomas raised his voice, before he regained himself, and lowered it again. He was emotional, his eyes darting around before they settled on Andrew. "Did you know?" He asked and Andrew said nothing.

"Don’t bring Andrew into this part. He’s...stood up for you guys more." Maxwell told them, his gaze hardening before he softened again. "I just...I didn’t think you cared, you know? I was just the omega kid in my head so-"

"Of course we would care about you! The only reason we were so insistent on getting married is because we wanted you to have some security, a family that you could make your own. A partner who you could rely on. I know how lonely it can be when you’re an omega, especially an omega in the spotlight. I just wanted you to have someone in your corner, who would go to bat for you. I’m so sorry that they were such horrible experiences." Luis had given up all pretenses, and was crying now. Thomas was barely holding on by a string.

Maxwell was held together, but only because he seemed...confused. It was like he had never considered this as a possible outcome, and that alone hurt Andrew.

"They weren’t that bad." Maxwell muttered and Andrew bent, leaning in. Maxwell turned his gaze towards Andrew just due to his proximity, and Andrew smiled.

"Maxwell, they were fucking awful." Andrew told him kindly, and Maxwell’s gaze widened as Andrew looked over at Maxwell’s parents. "I witnessed a few before Maxwell and I were anything romantic, and they were...I would have taken the alphas outside and hosed them off if I had been capable of doing so." Andrew told them and Thomas looked ill.

"I am so sorry Maxwell. I never-we never wanted you to feel that way. We would have stopped it if you had explained it to us. You never did. You just told us to stop, but gave us no reason, so we just thought you were being stubborn." Thomas said, before his face fell and he hung his head. "No. That should have been enough. I’m so sorry son." Thomas apologised and Andrew noticed that Maxwell’s eyes were a little damp.

"It’s fine now. I have Andrew, and he chased off all the bad ones." Maxwell said with a slightly warped smile, before he sighed. "But...either way, that was one of the reasons why we ended up at the hospital. The other was...my last heat was a bit unusual." Maxwell frowned before he turned to Andrew. "Can I...tell them what I tried to do?" Maxwell asked Andrew and Andrew felt his heart race in his chest.

Was he going to tell them that he tried to get pregnant? He really didn’t have to, but it seemed that Maxwell wanted to be honest, and if he was going to tell them, he was going to tell them everything. Andrew would have laughed at how much the other man wanted to prove he was holding up his end of the bargain if he wasn’t sure that it was hurting him to speak on this.

Andrew bent and pressed his lips against his forehead.

"I’m okay with you speaking about it." Andrew told him and Maxwell gulped. Luis looked even more concerned.

"What happened? Did something happen before this between you and Andrew?" She asked, worry in her tone, and Maxwell’s cheeks flared.

"I...am pretty sure that due to my heat I had some strange urges. Andrew and I have discussed children at length, but I...either willfully or otherwise forgot about it. I tried to...baby trap him." Maxwell mumbled the end, clearly the most embarrassed about this behaviour. Andrew couldn’t blame him. It was quite embarrassing for a normal person to do, while Luis and Thomas were shocked.

They probably hadn’t expected that to come out of their son’s mouth. Especially after what he’d said before.

"You tried to-I assume it isn’t-" Maxwell nodded, cutting off the stuttering Thomas.

"That’s why I’m so certain. I’m not pregnant. It wasn’t even a good baby trap. I still took the medication, I just...shorted a few pills here and there, and hoped that they would fail." Maxwell muttered. He avoided admitting to pressuring Andrew into none safe sex, but Andrew felt like they could make that jump on their own. They knew how babies were made. Thomas let out a deep exhale, blinking several times.

"Okay. Was there anything else you wanted to get checked up on that we need to be worried about?" Maxwell shook his head.

"Those were the two concerns we went in with, and left with our relationship nearly falling apart." Maxwell bit his lip. "It was my fault." He started, and when Andrew went to speak, Maxwell turned and covered Andrew’s mouth with his hand. His gaze was serious, his eyes wet. "I was the one at fault. Don’t you try to say that I wasn’t wrong in the beginning. I did react to what you did, but I didn’t explain to you what was going on, while you were upfront with me the whole time. I threw a fit because I was having a hard time bringing up the time I didn’t remember. Andrew noticed that the Doctor was winding down and spoke up for me. That sent this all off, and here we are." Maxwell exhaled.

"This started because of something Andrew did?" Thomas asked and Maxwell shook his head.

"This started because I wasn’t honest with Andrew in the same way that he was honest with me, and I said some really hurtful things to him because I was...anxious? In my feelings? I don’t have the word for it, but I was not in my right mind. That doesn’t excuse my response, but it..." Maxwell trailed off. "Either way, we did end up discussing it and I had a few extra scans and things to do after Andrew left." Maxwell mumbled. He looked at Andrew, exhausted already and gave his hand a squeeze. Andrew knew what he meant by it, and gave a squeeze in response.

"Maxwell had another episode where he doesn’t remember what happened last night." Andrew told him and both of them seemed horrified. Maxwell’s ears were flushed, his eyes were wet, and he was shaking slightly. Andrew didn’t feel comfortable leaving this man until this was fully sorted, and thankfully, his parents seemed receptive to Maxwell’s words.
