Chapter 228: When you just want the best for someone
"What? Last night?" Luis repeated, horror painted on her face as Andrew said it. Andrew nodded.
"There were some strange things about it. I woke up thinking that maybe he had gone to the bathroom, but then when I checked he was pressed against the backyard window and door, he’d turned on the light in the backyard, and had taken a pile of my clothes and placed them in the middle of the floor." Andrew told them and Thomas and Luis shared a look. Maxwell looked really embarrassed at having this aired, but Andrew was here to support him.
"What were you doing by the back door, Maxwell? Do you have any idea?" Thomas asked and Maxwell met his Father’s gaze for a moment, before he darted his gaze away.
"I...was making sure that if Andrew came home he knew that the lights were on for him." Maxwell muttered. Andrew felt his heart breaking at hearing it again, and unable to stop himself, he reached out with his hand and pulled the man into his arms, tucking his head against his shoulder and he held him. He sighed, Maxwell’s body shaking slightly.
Maxwell was doing his best to hold himself together. Andrew understood that part of it was because he was at work, and he didn’t want to look weak here. The other part had to be because Maxwell never showed this kind of vulnerability to anyone. He’d had a hard time showing this to Andrew, and now he was having to do it again so soon.
"Oh my son." Luis said, before she moved and Andrew felt a hesitant set of arms wrap around him, before another set did the same. Maxwell was shaking beneath them. "It’s okay. We’ll figure this out. There isn’t anything wrong with you." Luis whispered. It was more in Andrew’s ear, but Maxwell understood. He let out a shaky exhale.
"There is something wrong with me." He whispered and Luis shook her head.
"Not in the way you are thinking, Maxwell. You’re just different. That’s okay. This is..." Luis exhaled.
"It’s okay, Maxwell." Thomas said as well, his voice tight. It sounded like the man was trying not to cry. "I’m sorry you feel like you couldn’t rely on us for so long, and whatever behaviour we exhibited for you to feel that way, we’ll fix. You are our family. If anyone tried to take you away from us completely..." Thomas made a sound in the back of his throat while Luis let out a tiny gasp.
"Honey." She warned, and Thomas reigned in his pheromones. Andrew’s chest tightened at that. It was clear that Maxwell was loved, and it devastated him still that Maxwell had even considered that he wasn’t.
"I don’t think you did anything wrong." Maxwell mumbled. "It’s just...me." It was Andrew’s turn to make a noise in the back of his throat. Everyone froze.
"Don’t you dare say that. Don’t even finish that thought. You’re a wonderful man, Maxwell. We just had a severe breakdown in communication, and that’s okay. Same with your parents. Just because you bundle everything up doesn’t mean that there is something wrong with you. So don’t try to spit in their face when they are trying to offer a hand, alright? They just want to make sure that you know you are loved, accepted, and everyone cares for you." Andrew squeezed the other man. "It’s okay to feel overwhelmed right now. You don’t need to try and find a solution for it." Maxwell’s grip on Andrew’s hand was bruising, but Andrew didn’t think it was much different then the grip Andrew had on the back of Maxwell’s neck.
"Damn it. I hurt you the most." Maxwell said, his voice sounding warped, like he was crying. Maxwell’s parents remained, surrounding the couple with their warmth and affection.
"That’s okay." Andrew told him softly, and Maxwell sobbed.
"No, it’s not! I don’t want to be like everyone else! I want to be better!" Maxwell’s words were so sincere, so filled with his emotions that Andrew could feel his own eyes watering.
"You aren’t like them, Maxwell. You’ll never be like them. You care about me too much to be like them. You’ve always looked at me for me. You’ve never looked at me like I was a disappointment for being a beta, or that I had a new worth because I’m an alpha now. It’s okay, Maxwell. I don’t hate omegas." Andrew told him, holding him and Maxwell sobbed. "I don’t hate you." Andrew whispered and Luis squeezed them.
"No one hates you, Maxwell. Not anyone who matters. The people in your company love you enough to fight for you. Do you know what they did when your Father came storming in here yelling last week? They sent email after email complaining about the treatment you received." Luis chuckled. "You are so loved, my son. Whatever this is, we will get through it. You aren’t doing this alone." She promised and Maxwell’s body shook.
"I had some rather angry omegas tailing me." Thomas added. "And several alphas who work here as well. And betas. Everyone cares about you, and what you’ve done for this world. Everyone messes up, Maxwell, and I am so proud of you and what you’ve done so far. I admit, I can be harsh at times, but you usually push back so quickly that I just..." He trailed off. "We’re here for you son. We always will be. So what if you need to take some time to figure out what’s going on? You took a month off from doing in person meetings, we can do it again. I can step in and fill in for you for as long as you need to get this sorted. Get the tests, get the answers, we will make sure that your company doesn’t fail while you do so." Thomas promised. freёwebnoѵel.com
Andrew wasn’t exactly sure if that was what Maxwell needed to hear, but he understood that they were a little awkward with each other, and that this might be how Thomas showed his love. That was okay. Maxwell’s wet laughter told him that it was okay.
"Thanks, Dad." He muttered and they remained like that, silent, wrapped in each other for a long moment. It was only broken when Maxwell sniffed, pushing against Andrew’s hold on his neck and it seemed that Maxwell had reached his limit.
Slowly, the four of them separated, but Maxwell kept his hold on Andrew’s hand. His eyes were swollen, the blue in great contrast to the redness there. His Mom wasn’t any different, her gaze a mirror of her sons, or vice versa. Thomas even looked a little worse for wear.
Andrew knew he probably looked bad. He was an awful, ugly crier.
Maxwell, looking up at him snorting, before he started laughing as Andrew wiped at his eyes.
"What? Laughing at how I look? That’s cruel." Andrew said, pretending to be upset and pouting and Maxwell leaned in, pressing his head against Andrew’s shoulder and sighing.
"I’m just glad that trait didn’t change. You are still you." Maxwell said with great affection and despite the situation, and the severity and intensity of it, Andrew felt his heart race at the simple action. Andrew sighed, resting his head on Maxwell’s.
"Yeah yeah, you and your pretty Mom can go cry and look ready to walk a runway after. I’ll be over here, looking like a pufferfish." That only seemed to set Maxwell off again, and his laughter settled some of the anxiety floating in Andrew’s stomach. Even Thomas and Luis looked a little more settled after hearing him laugh.
"What’s the next step?" Luis asked after Maxwell had finished laughing.
"Well, Maxwell needs to go back to the Doctor and report that it happened again. We aren’t quite sure what is the cause of this. She did mention that his levels are higher." Andrew started, before freezing. He was speaking for Maxwell. He shouldn’t-
Maxwell’s hand on Andrew’s thigh had him pausing.
"It’s okay, Andrew." Maxwell whispered and Andrew felt his body relax. Oh thank goodness.
"Okay, so you need to go back to the hospital. Alright. Anything else? And what do you mean your levels changed? Are you stable now?" Luis asked and Maxwell sighed.
"I’m not at the same level as other omegas, but she kind of suggested that the more time I spend with Andrew, the more stable my pheromones could become. I could do more omega things." Maxwell coughed, while Luis’ lips twitched.
"Is that what it was when you gathered his clothes? Were you nesting?" She asked and Maxwell wouldn’t say anything. Andrew didn’t know what to say in this situation, it was out of his depth. Thomas remained silent as well. Eventually, Maxwell spoke.
"I...don’t know if that was the case. Since it was linked to my anxiety that Andrew would come home in a similar fashion to when he was kidnapped, and other anxieties, I don’t know." Maxwell sighed. "I’ve also never nested before, so I don’t have any experience to go off of." Luis snorted, the sound very unladylike coming from her, and surprised Andrew.
"You don’t need experience with it. You either did, or you didn’t. There also isn’t a book explaining what the right way to nest is. Everyone is different. Did it feel like nesting to you?" She asked and Maxwell hesitated again.
"I just...missed him." Maxwell muttered and both of his parents softened, while glancing between the couple. Andrew knew he was flushed, he couldn’t help it. Hearing Maxwell say these words out loud? His heart was shaking in his chest, and he was sure his pheromones were all over the place. Maxwell’s were.
"That’s your answer then." Luis said warmly. "I’ll call the Doctor right away and get you scheduled in. Don’t worry about it, I’ll take care of it. You just need to come with me to the appointments." She told him and Maxwell went to protest, before he nodded. Andrew hoped that some of the weight that had been making it hard for Maxwell to function had been lifted off of his shoulders. He didn’t think his parents were unreliable, and if Luis said he just needed to show up, she meant it.
Andrew gave his hand a little squeeze and Maxwell looked up at him. HIs eyes were still swimming, the tears remaining nearby, but he let out a shaky breath before resting his head against Andrew’s shoulder again.
"Thank you for making me speak about this." He told him softly and Andrew pressed his lips against his forehead.
"Thank you for not getting upset when I asked you to go back to the Doctor." Andrew said in return and Maxwell sighed.
"I think I understood exactly why you were refusing, and that’s why I put so much pressure on you." Maxwell admitted and Andrew laughed.
"Well then, it’s my turn to be empathetic, isn’t it?" Andrew told him with a smile and Maxwell grumbled.
