Chapter 279: We’re all in this together
Andrew remained on the phone with both Maxwell and Dr. Liu even as Dr. Liu’s connection cut in and out because of the elevator. Andrew could hear that Mr. Newman was letting Maxwell know he had a meeting, but Maxwell let him know that they had a situation on their hands and he needed to wait until it was wrapped up.
Thankfully, Mr. Newman was great at stalling others.
Andrew could hear when the group arrived. Dr. Piper and Dr. Cox let out surprised exclamations, but they didn’t come into view as Dr. Liu and the others did.
"They’re here." Andrew told Maxwell over the phone, hanging up on Dr. Liu since she was in sight. He shoved Dr. Cox’s phone into his pocket, swallowing as Dr. Liu opened the door. Andrew turned his gaze towards Richard, but no reaction. Nothing.
Dr. Liu stepped into the room, joining Andrew at his side and they both stared at Richard as the group she had brought waited outside for her to give the go ahead.
"Well, you weren’t wrong about his condition. He hasn’t responded to you at all?" Andrew shook his head.
"I’ve also been trying to control my pheromones. Can you smell them?" Dr. Liu looked at him, sniffed, then furrowed her brows.
"Pardon me." She muttered, before leaning in, and then her lips twitched as pulled away. "That might explain his lack of reaction. You smell heavily of Mr. Beckett." Dr. Liu told him. Andrew felt a silly, wide, proud smile spread across his lips.
"Here that, Maxy? I only smell like you." Andrew told him over the phone. Maxwell chuckled.
"Glad to help you go undercover, Dr. Nice." Maxwell teased and Andrew wanted to blow kisses into the phone. Really embarrass him, but he needed to focus on Richard.
"Does he seem...okay?" Andrew asked. "I’ve never had to worry about him like this. Shit. I should call his parents, shouldn’t I?" Andrew muttered.
"I’ll get in contact with May." Maxwell said over the line. "In fact, I’ve already been doing that. Don’t worry baby, I’m helping. Ford just responded. He’s on his way, since they’re both worried May might set him off." Andrew nodded, looking at Dr. Liu. He was sure she was able to pick up on a few of Maxwell’s words, but it was polite to explain it to her.
"His Dad is on the way. He’s a beta, so he’s safer than his Mom." Dr. Liu nodded.
"I’ve met Mr. Gates before. He’s a nice man. Alright, I’m going to call in the team. Back up, just in case." Andrew nodded, backing himself up until he was against the wall and the edge of Dr. Cox’s desk. Andrew watched as a group of Doctors entered, all wearing masks. They had gloves on, carried a few bags, as well as a stretcher. They placed it down in the room, and Dr. Liu took control. She began to approach.
"Dr. Gates? Did you forget about the meeting we scheduled about five minutes ago?" It was smart of her to approach it like they were just at work, and that was all they were doing. Andrew watched with baited breath.
God, he hoped that Richard was okay.
Richard stirred, exhaling slowly, before he blinked and turned to Dr. Liu.
"Dr. Liu? What are you doing here?" He didn’t hear a word that she said, but he was able to tell who was next to him. Was he only able to tell because of scent? That was insane, but then again, Andrew hadn’t been around other omegas when they had been this deep into their heat before. He’d always been around them when they were panicking at the beginning, not like this.
He also didn’t think Maxwell was a good example of what other omegas were supposed to be like, since he had learned that he hadn’t been behaving like normal omegas until very recently.
"Dr. Gates? We had a meeting scheduled. You didn’t show." Dr. Liu repeated and Richard blinked slowly, before he reached up and knocked his glasses off of his face. He frowned, and his reaction time was slow. Dr. Liu grabbed his glasses for him, handing them back to him and he struggled to get them back on his face. He was flushed, his brown eyes hazy even from where Andrew could see them, and his mouth was slightly open.
"Oh. I didn’t-I forgot." He frowned deeper. "That’s unlike me. I’m sorry." Richard’s words were slow, measured. Like it took a lot of effort for him to speak.
"That’s alright, Dr. Gates. How about we go now?" Dr. Liu offered and Richard nodded. He got to his feet, and nearly collapsed.
"That’s strange." Richard said as he barely caught himself, Dr. Liu had to catch him as his legs almost gave out. Andrew had to fight himself from running over to help. It was a good thing that the other helpers were in front of him with the stretcher. He could have just jumped over it to go to him.
He didn’t like seeing Richard like this. It was making him antsy. Upset.
"It’s okay, Dr. Gates. I’m happy to help." Dr. Liu told him calmly, and Richard didn’t like that. It was clear that they had poked the bear, and now he was waking up.
"No. It’s not okay. I’m not...I’m usually better than this. What’s going on? Why do I feel so hot?" Richard’s words, which had been slow, were starting to come out fast. Very stream of consciousness, something that Andrew was sure happened to everyone. He was barely holding himself up. His arms shook as he pressed them against the desk. "What’s with all these smells? I feel gross." Andrew almost wanted to laugh. He was right.
It was fucking awful coming from a beta background.
"It’s okay, Dr. Gates. It’s normal. I’m just going to have you come over here-" Richard jerked, moving away from her and that didn’t seem to be in Dr. Liu’s cards. She didn’t expect Richard to be stubborn. She really should have.
"No! I don’t know what’s going on, and I don’t want to go with you. You smell..." He shuddered. "I don’t like it." He told her point blank and it looked as if it was a serious blow to her. She seemed stunned, shocked, and Andrew had to hold in his laughter.
Yeah. They might not be brothers by blood, but hell if that was a sign that they were in this together.
Andrew couldn’t remain on the sidelines for much longer, in fact, he couldn’t do it at all as he watched Richard begin to struggle. It triggered something in him and he found himself moving before he could even stop himself.
"Sorry Max." Andrew muttered into the phone as he put it down on Dr. Cox’s desk and then moved. The other men let out a few shouts, trying to prevent him from passing, but Andrew made it to Dr. Liu’s side quickly.
She was having a hard time managing Richard, who was now kicking up a stink. The smell of pheromones was thick in the air, and it did make Andrew want to gag.
"Ugh." Andrew complained, and Richard froze.
"Andy? Why does it smell like chai in here?" He complained, and Andrew snorted.
"Don’t you dare say anything negative about that, or I might have to throw hands, whether you’re aware of it or not." Andrew declared but he could tell that Richard was only growing more confused, and that meant that his pheromones got stronger. Dr. Liu looked pissed that Andrew was over here, and he would apologise after but he just couldn’t.
He had been fine up until this point, since there hadn’t been a situation like this before, but now that he was practically back to where he had been before? Andrew couldn’t control his body. He couldn’t let Richard go through any of the things that he had gone through. He couldn’t.
"What? What are you talking about?" Richard was growing more distressed and Andrew glanced at Dr. Liu.
"I’ll be fine. I have to be fine. Dr. Liu, I know this is way out of the norm, but I would never harm Richard. He’s a brother to me." Dr. Liu frowned and he respected her deeply for that. "I won’t hurt him." Andrew told her firmly. She scanned him, taking in everything about him before she slowly stepped back and Andrew took her place, holding Richard up. She took a few steps back, remaining close.
Andrew was going to take a different approach to this. Dr. Liu clearly was trying to keep him out of the know, but Richard wasn’t reacting well to that, so Andrew was just going to break the news to him.
"Ricky." Andrew started and he jerked in his arms.
"You never call me that anymore." Richard muttered, confusion crossing his expression, before panic blended almost seamlessly into it. "What’s wrong? You know what’s happening to me?" He demanded and Andrew let out a soft laugh.
"Do you feel hot? Itchy? Annoyed? Can’t keep a thought?" Richard nodded, licking his lips.
"I’m thirsty too." Ah. Yeah, Andrew had forgotten about that part. For good reason. They had him on fluids at the time. He didn’t ’need’ to drink.
"The smells are overwhelming, aren’t they?" Andrew said and Richard froze. He turned to stone, and Andrew could feel him thinking, the wheels turning.
"W-Wha-"
"Ricky, Ford’s on his way. May is staying away because she doesn’t want to hurt you or cause you distress. I’m thinking maybe we should ask Rose if she can stay with you. You shouldn’t be alone." Richard’s head was spinning for several reasons.
"I can’t keep up." Richard admitted and Andrew’s chest squeezed. He was. He was keeping up, but he hadn’t made the last connection.
"You’ve manifested. Congrats. Welcome to the club." Andrew told him and Richard let out a breath. Andrew was worried when it didn’t sound like he’d taken another and a wave of pheromones covered him. Andrew had to try not to gag. Ugh, old lady perfume.
"W-What? It’s just a fever! I didn’t-"
"I don’t know why, Ricky, but it’s true. You’ve manifested. And...you’re an omega." Richard had been staring blankly at the desk, the screen, not really looking at Andrew until that moment. He jerked his gaze towards Andrew, horror on his face.
"Y-You shouldn’t be here! You shouldn’t be near me if that’s the case! Get out of here, Andy!" Richard shouted and Andrew gave him a soft smile.
"I’m not letting you go through this alone." Andrew told him and watched Richard’s face as his whole persona shattered. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
"You big fucking asshole."
