Chapter 280: Richard, don’t be a dumbass

"Are you seeing anyone?" Andrew asked and Richard nearly choked.

"Why is that important? Does Max know you’re here?" Richard demanded instead and Andrew laughed.

"I called him after I called Dr. Liu. Yes, he knows I’m here, and it’s important since I remember that I wanted to get to my partner when I first manifested. Do you have anyone like that?" Andrew asked and watched as Richard’s face turned an even darker shade of red and he swallowed.

"No. I’ve been single for years. Got broken up with before Rose’s wedding." Ouch. That had to hurt, but that was something they could worry about later.

"Okay. Good. Now, let the people here help. I’m sure you’re more familiar with who they are." Andrew said, turning Richard’s attention to the group of people with the stretcher. A few of them waved and Richard groaned. Andrew was holding him up, so he was able to raise his hands to his face, covering it entirely.

"Oh fucking damnit." He swore and Andrew grinned.

"What? Never expected that it would be you? It’s okay. It happens to all of us. No thinking of yourself as a research subject until you get through this." Andrew warned Richard, and he grumbled.

"Why not? This is fascinating." Richard complained and Andrew snorted.

"No. It’s not. It’s hellish, especially without a partner. They’re going to give you some meds and help you, and take you to a place where you won’t be in danger." Andrew told him and Richard froze.

"Oh hell no. You’re going to treat me like the other omegas, aren’t you?" Andrew grinned.

"Like the others? Hell no." Andrew leaned in, grinning. "You’re getting the same treatment as my Mom." Richard groaned, shoving Andrew’s face away.

"Oh fuck no! I am not one to be coddled, you fucker! I am not going near them, and I am not-"

"You don’t get a choice, Ricky. Now behave yourself before I have to manhandle you. I said you’re getting the Mom special. Did you think I didn’t have to fight her to get her to the hospital?" Andrew said cheerfully, but Richard froze.

"Fucking hell. Alright! It’s embarrassing enough that this is happening at work, I don’t need to add to my list of embarrassments." Richard muttered bitterly, finally allowing Andrew to help him towards the stretcher. He looked pissed the whole time, but also relieved once he was lying down and not standing upright. Andrew could tell he was having a hard time breathing, and he wished that they weren’t underground so that he could open a window. Fresh air was always good in a situation like this.

"That was reckless." Dr. Liu’s voice was a shock to Andrew, and he turned to find her staring at him. Her gaze was serious, dark. He knew what she was getting at.

Under normal circumstances, anytime an alpha came into contact with an in heat omega, it was dangerous. Alpha’s tended to lose themselves, give in to their base urges. They turned into feral monsters and chased the poor omegas who were going through some of the worst experiences of their lives.

Andrew couldn’t outright say that he was different. He wouldn’t make that kind of broad generalization. What he could say was this.

"Dr. Liu, I’m sure you overheard us. My Mom was an omega, and she had some rather serious medical conditions. They resulted in her death." Andrew’s smile was soft. "I have no lost love for alphas. Honestly. I would have preferred manifesting as an omega." Andrew told her and that seemed to surprise Dr. Liu. She didn’t interrupt him. "With that said, I’ve always thought it was fucking bullshit that alphas claimed that they ’had no choice’ when it came to omegas in heat. Admittedly, this is my first interaction with someone who isn’t Max, but..." He let out a soft exhale. "It’s Ricky. He’s my brother. I’m not so much of a monster that I would attack the man who helped me play pretend when we were kids."

"He’s not my type, Dr. Liu." Richard called from where he was on the stretcher. "Too tall." Andrew snorted.

"And he also wears glasses? Off the table." Andrew joked, and Richard scoffed.

"Come off it. Look at his shoulders? Too broad." Richard shot back and Andrew couldn’t help the laughter that shook his body. These were things that they had in common, the traits that they shared. Things that they had always been teased for. The confusion that had crossed other’s faces when they realised that they were both betas had been almost comical.

Almost.

And now Richard was going to be a tall, burly omega.

Andrew felt something shift in his chest, and he felt his eyes water. Fuck.

"Hey now, Maxy likes these broad shoulders." Andrew told him, forcing a smile as everyone else listened to their banter. A few of the men helping were smiling. Then, Andrew heard Maxwell shout from his phone and he felt his eyes widen. Oh shit.

Andrew bolted for the phone, yanking it up off of Dr. Cox’s desk.

"Sorry Angel. Ricky’s on the stretcher, being disobedient, but he’s getting locked in and soon will be carted off to get some meds pumped into him." Andrew told Maxwell. He could tell he was pissed.

"You can’t scare me like that." Maxwell protested, not pissed like Andrew thought. Worried. He was worried. "How wouldn’t I think the worst had happened? You’re both newly manifested! Neither one of you knows what basic manners are!" Maxwell protested and Andrew sighed.

"We’re brothers, Maxy. It’s not going to happen." Andrew told him and Maxwell scoffed.

"I know that! That’s not what I’m worried about! Pass me off to Dr. Liu." He spat, and Andrew did as he was told. Holding out the phone to Dr. Liu with a significantly less happy expression. She tried not to smile.

"Hello, Mr. Beckett." She answered while Andrew turned his attention back to Richard. He was panting now, his breathing coming in short bursts and he looked as if he was getting worse. His smell was intensifying, and his vision looked even more blurry.

"You still with us, Ricky? Or are you going into lala land?" Andrew teased and watched as Richard grimaced.

"Shut your fucking mouth, Andy." Richard growled, and one of the helpers chuckled.

"Great way to distract him. Anger works wonders." He commented, and Andrew was sure he was smiling behind the mask he was wearing. Richard huffed, before the other helper beside him began to ask for his attention.

Andrew watched as Richard was hooked up to something and it was placed on his lap, then, with a nod from Dr. Liu, the four helpers lifted him up. Richard groaned, glancing towards Andrew and Andrew was right there. He followed them as they began to move out of the office, and when he met Dr. Piper and Dr. Cox’s gaze, they both seemed in shock. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

"Oh my god. Is he okay?" Dr. Piper asked, horrified and Andrew let out a deep sigh.

"He will be. He just needs...well, we probably won’t have Richard in the office for a little bit."

"That’s not true." Richard spoke up from where he was lying down. "I’ll be back within the week." Richard said. Andrew scoffed.

"Shut the fuck up. There is no way that is happening. You’re a damn doctor who specializes in secondary sexes. You know damn well how long a heat lasts." Andrew wasn’t taking any of Richard’s shit right now. The man was panting on a stretcher. He couldn’t even hold himself up right now.

Richard’s face twisted and he looked pretty embarrassed. Dr. Cox moved towards his side while the rest waited for the elevator.

"Why didn’t you say anything? You know neither one of us would have judged you." She sounded quite upset, and Richard looked even more embarrassed.

"I...thought it was just a cold." Richard mumbled, low enough that Dr. Cox scrunched up her face.

"What?" She asked, unable to hear him. Andrew had to turn his face away to hide his smile and stop himself from laughing.

"I thought it was just a cold." Richard said, louder, and that only made Dr. Cox frown more.

"You thought the symptoms of a heat were a cold? Are you a damn fool, Dr. Gates?" Dr. Cox sounded pissed, and Andrew completely understood. He had been a fool, and the symptoms had been going on for a while.

"Ricky, did you even go to a doctor when you realised that your flu was lasting for two weeks?" Andrew asked and watched as Richard refused to meet his gaze. Dr. Cox let out a sigh full of maternal disappointment and Andrew winced. Yikes.

"I’m disappointed in you, Dr. Gates. If I see hide or hair of you within a week’s time I’m ratting you out to every authority I know." She made a pointed look to Andrew, who waved. Richard grumbled.

"I’ll be fine." Andrew laughed.

"It took me over a month to get my shit together. I don’t expect anything less from you, Ricky. Shut up, and call me when you’re out of the mini heat you get right after manifesting." Andrew told him and he could tell that Richard was about two seconds from throwing a tantrum.

Thankfully, the elevator opened and Richard was taken away. There wasn’t enough room for Dr. Liu inside so she waited for them to leave before pressing the button again. She was also wrapping up her conversation with Maxwell. Andrew stood awkwardly, waiting for his phone while still in his coat. He hadn’t even had a chance to take it off before he realised something was wrong.
