Chapter 339: We get to take home Richard today
Wednesday came like a sledgehammer, smashing through all of the well intentioned plans that they had set.
Andrew barely got any sleep the night before. Not because of anything Maxwell had done, but due to his own nerves. He felt like a nervous wreck. He was so worried about how Richard was going to react once he left the safe bubble that the Doctors had built for him that it had him staring up at the ceiling most of the night, Maxwell curled into his arms. freeweɓnovel~cѳm
When Andrew had heard the sound of birdsong at one point, he then got nervous about the fact that he had stayed awake all night. He was only able to talk himself down after a few minutes, and then the cycle would repeat. Andrew was exhausted before the day even began.
Everyone was ready for the day, but also walking on eggshells. The team who had been looking after Richard all this time were worried that Richard was going to have a serious reaction to leaving the safety of the basement with very few scents and moving to another location where it was a free for all.
Every single thought in the world was keeping Andrew up. Was he asking the team who was in charge of Richard too many questions? Were they getting annoyed by him? Had they not said anything because he was Maxwell’s boyfriend and that they all hated him being on the team in any capacity? He knew that his worries were probably nothing, but he really didn’t want to fuck this up.
He didn’t want to fuck Richard up. That sounded the worst outcome to him.
Maxwell was putting on a good show that he wasn’t as concerned as Andrew was, but he was showing it in other ways. He was kind of making the contractor’s lives living hell because he was so on their asses. It was Andrew who would come by and offer food and other things to appease them that was making everything balance out. Not that Maxwell was a monster, or that the contractors were obviously upset, it was just Andrew’s own response to the anxiety he was feeling.
Andrew knew that May and Ford weren’t in a better mental state either. He was laying there, staring at the ceiling when he heard his phone go off. When he reached for it, it was May messaging a group chat that had him, Maxwell, May, Ford, Rose, and Jordan in it. No Richard, since it was about him. Andrew would have laughed if it didn’t solidify that he had a reason to be worried.
Eventually, it was time for Andrew to actually get up, and it was as he was making breakfast that Rose added to the group chat. Andrew would have laughed if he didn’t also get a message from both Thomas and Luis asking if everything was okay if he and Maxwell needed anything to help Richard out.
Maxwell, thankfully, was putting on a good show of being not stressed at all. Even if Andrew knew it probably wasn’t good for the other man, he was appreciative of it right now. They could address how bad it was for Maxwell later, Andrew was going to take advantage of his cool and calm demeanor for now.
The contractors were only coming in in the morning to finish up a few tasks and then they were off for two weeks. This was to give Richard some time to adjust, settle into the new house, and give the other parts time to arrive. They were supposed to message Maxwell as each part arrived just to make sure that they had everything in place to commence the next part of the renovations.
As far as Andrew knew, they were waiting on one part for Richard’s suite. That was all Andrew knew. Richard’s temporary room was ready, and while Andrew was waiting for the right time to wake Maxwell up, he toured the new space. He hoped Richard liked it. Really. It would only stress him out more if he hated the place.
He also knew he was talking about Richard like he was a new hamster or housecat, but he couldn’t help it. It kind of felt like they were getting one, but he would never tell Richard that to his face.

When Andrew came into work, fumbling over his feet, tripping, and spilling the drinks he had brought everyone, it was clear that Dr. Cox and Dr. Piper knew they were in for a day. They had helped him clean up everything, listened to Andrew apologise over and over, and then had watched Andrew as he sat down at his desk, turned on his computer and proceeded to get nothing done for the first hour.
Andrew had to get through a full day of work, but Andrew thought he was seeing stars. He couldn’t focus, due to the lack of sleep and stress but Dr. Cox and Dr. Piper were completely understanding. Everyone was. It was like everyone on the lower floors knew what was going on, along with some of the upper levels as well. That was probably the case.
It wasn’t like Richard wasn’t well known in the building. Richard hadn’t been hired to work on alphas originally, it just became obvious that that was the next direction they were going to expand, and Richard had the right attitude.
That proved correct when how much work he’d been doing on his own had been revealed and how they needed to hire two more people to replace him in the office while he was away under medical leave.
Maxwell was busy too. Very busy. Today was a big day since both him and Andrew were off for the rest of the week to support Richard, so he was in back to back meetings. His day was full, while Andrew felt like he wouldn’t be able to handle the same work load that Maxwell was doing because every urge in him was telling him to go be with Richard, support him, and take him in so that he had a longer time to adjust.
The numbers and words on the screen were a blur, but Andrew tried his best.
At lunch time Andrew pondered over the fact if he should go have lunch with Maxwell or Richard. Maxwell answered that question for him. Andrew’s phone had rang on his desk, telling him that he had a food delivery to come pick up and the receptionist told him it was from Mr. Beckett, specifically the one upstairs.
That answered Andrew’s question. Maxwell wanted him to go eat with Richard, so he didn’t have to worry about what he would think. So, Andrew went down to each lunch with Richard, and maybe go over some of the finer details. Richard seemed surprised to see Andrew when he showed up, which Andrew tried not to take personally.
It was Richard he was talking about. The man barely thought anyone liked him, because he was an asshole sometimes, and too smart for most people the rest of the time. At least, that was what he had thought when he was younger. Something a much, much younger Richard had confided in Andrew when they had been kids.
Andrew had a feeling that belief hadn’t shifted much, especially when Andrew was all smiles as he placed the food down in the bubble Richard had been living in thus far.
Richard didn’t outwardly show any signs of being especially nervous, even though Andrew knew that wasn’t the case. The man had to be nervous. Andrew was nervous. Everyone was nervous about how Richard could react to the outside world.
The worst part? Richard hadn’t responded in the same way that Andrew had.
That statement might not make any sense until Andrew explained it more. Unlike Andrew, who had manifested and immediately had a scent to latch on that soothed him, Richard was the complete opposite. Nothing had stirred him, or caused him comfort. That was actually not a good thing, apparently? Usually omegas and alphas would latch onto a scent.
It didn’t have to be related to a human, but could just be something that they normally liked that brought them comfort. Could be flowers, food, environmental smells, cleaning supplies. Literally anything.
Richard wasn’t showing signs of having something like that. It was a bit concerning, something that Dr. Liu had told him on the down low, but things could change. It hadn’t been that long, and Andrew’s case was also surprising in a different way, so they could be dealing with a few extremes.
It didn’t mean that there was anything wrong with Richard, it just meant that he didn’t have a tool in his arsenal to calm himself if things got overwhelming. That was the biggest concern from everyone.
Despite that, Richard was in good spirits. He was excited to get out of this stuffy place, and see sunlight. He hadn’t realised how much he had missed it until it wasn’t an option anymore. He prided himself on being a nerd that didn’t need sunlight, but maybe he was wrong.
He ordered Andrew not to tell his Dad about that.

Coming back up to his office after lunch, Andrew’s head was still spinning. He had spent it talking to Richard, but May and Ford had called during that time and had demanded to know every answer in the world as well. They had been so close to finishing up lunch too, so it had really extended Andrew’s day. Or, eaten into the time that Andrew was just sitting at his desk doing nothing because he couldn’t focus.
Andrew appreciated that they often called when they knew that Andrew would be around Richard so that they could speak to him. They had been trying their best to give Richard some privacy, not wanting to overwhelm him with their scents, and giving their grown son some separation. Andrew knew most of the concerns were from May and that Ford was just trying to support both of them.
He was trying to support all of them, if Andrew was honest with himself. Ford was just observing, supportive, and in the background. He was the example of the kind of man that Andrew wanted to be for Maxwell.
Andrew sighed, dropping his head to the edge of his desk and groaning to himself. He was getting nothing done. He was just a body taking up a desk right now and getting paid for it. This was hard, and he had to wait for Maxwell to get off first before they could go pick up Richard. He just needed to be patient.
He’d even planned to make Richard’s favourite food too.
