Chapter 28: Charles Is Bi?

Elliot’s face flushed slightly as he looked away. "You think so?" he muttered, his voice carrying a hint of embarrassment. He didn’t want to admit it, but Charles was right. Azreal’s name alone had saved him from a punishment that could’ve very well ended his life, and painstakingly so, it wasn’t the first time he had helped him out of trouble.

But before he could dwell on the thought for too long, another question popped into his mind. His eyes widened as he spun around to face Charles. "Wait, you didn’t answer my question earlier!"

Charles raised an eyebrow, his expression lazy and unconcerned as he plopped down on his massive bed, sprawling out comfortably. "Which question?" he asked, feigning ignorance.

Elliot’s cheeks tinged pink as he recalled their earlier conversation. "I asked if you were gay," he repeated, his tone more serious now. "But you just gave me a death glare without answering, so I’m asking again. Are you gay?"

Charles looked at him, his face a perfect mask of indifference. His dark silver eyes sparkled with amusement as he lazily leaned back, propping himself up on his elbows. A smirk played on his lips as he responded, "What do you think?"

"Well..." Elliot’s voice trailed off as he hesitated, but Charles cut in sharply, his words filled with indignation. "Of course I’m not gay... We’ve been in the same cultivation class, but the way you’re acting, it’s as if you barely know me at all. It’s baffling, especially since I’m quite popular in class..."

Elliot stared at him, blinking in disbelief. Charles’s self-glorification was truly something else. Elliot wondered how someone could be this shameless without even the slightest hint of embarrassment. But he kept his mouth shut, letting Charles continue his rant.

"It almost feels like you weren’t even the one attending those classes with me," Charles continued, his eyes narrowing. "Rather, it feels like it was an imposter."

Elliot’s heart skipped a beat. Panic surged through him as the implications of Charles’s words sank in. Had Charles somehow figured out the truth? Did he know about the transmigration, about the original soul that had occupied his body before him? But before his fears could spiral any further, Charles continued with a dismissive wave of his hand.

"But that’s impossible..." Charles said, his voice firm and certain. "So maybe... I’ll just take it as you not being that attentive in class. If you were, you’d know I have a girlfriend named Anna."

Elliot let out a quiet breath of relief. Of course, he wouldn’t have known that. After all, he hadn’t been the one occupying this body during those times Charles was referring to. Yet, he couldn’t exactly explain that, so he merely nodded, forcing a smile.

And, replaying Charles words tension immediately drained from Elliot’s body, and he let out a small breath of relief. So Charles hadn’t discovered anything after all. How could he have known that Elliot wasn’t the same person from before? Elliot quickly dismissed the anxious thoughts that had been clawing at his mind, allowing himself to relax. He was just overthinking it.

Besides, Charles having a girlfriend was good news, wasn’t it? It meant Charles wasn’t gay. And if Charles wasn’t gay, then things wouldn’t be awkward between them. Elliot could be friends with him without worrying about any misunderstandings. A wave of relief washed over him, and he felt a burst of joy bubbling inside.

Inwardly, he did a little celebratory dance in his head, convinced that everything would be easier from now on. But his celebration came to an abrupt halt when Charles added, "Well, I said I’m not gay because I’m bi."

Elliot’s head snapped up, his eyes wide with shock. "Bi?" The word came out before he could stop himself, his voice tinged with confusion and disbelief. How was this any better? Wasn’t this practically the same thing?

Charles looked at him with a smug grin. "Yes, bi. Do you have any issue with that?" His tone was playful, but there was a hint of challenge in his gaze.

Elliot blinked rapidly, his mind racing. Charles was bi? That meant he could be attracted to both girls and boys, didn’t it? Which meant there was still a chance for things to get complicated... But then, Elliot mentally shook himself. He was overthinking this, again. Just because Charles was bi didn’t mean he’d suddenly start hitting on him. They were just friends, nothing more.

Realizing how foolish his worries were, Elliot quickly shook his head. "No, of course I don’t have a problem with that." His voice was firm, leaving no room for misunderstanding. There was no way he was going to ruin the first friendship he’d made in this academy just because of his irrational thoughts. Charles’s sexuality didn’t change the fact that he was a good person and a friend.

For a moment, there was a silence between them, stretching long and heavy. Charles leaned back, his eyes studying Elliot curiously. Elliot could almost feel the weight of that gaze, but he forced himself to stay calm, his expression neutral. He wouldn’t let his thoughts betray him.

Finally, Charles spoke, his voice breaking the tension. "So, what was the urgent thing you came to me for? You said it was important."

The question snapped Elliot back to the present, his earlier panic resurfacing. He had almost forgotten the reason he came here in the first place. Taking a deep breath to steady himself, he swallowed hard, suddenly feeling his throat tighten. The words he had prepared seemed to get stuck, refusing to come out. But he forced himself to speak, knowing he couldn’t avoid this any longer.

"I... I absorbed raw mana energy from the crystal you gave me and—"

He didn’t get the chance to finish.

Charles’s eyes widened in horror, and his entire body stiffened. His face twisted into an expression of shock and disbelief as he shouted, his voice echoing off the walls, "YOU DID WHAT?"
