Chapter 27: Fleeing For Their Lives

Was this going to get him into more trouble? He couldn’t lie; he wasn’t even good at it. With his head lowered, he nodded aggressively, muttering, "Yes."

At his word’s one of the inspectors turned to the others, his face pale as he muttered, "That’s bad... This is really bad..."

Elliot stood there, his heart pounding in his chest as he tried to make sense of the situation. The inspectors’ words echoed in his head, mingling with his confusion.

"What’s bad?" he asked, his voice laced with anxiety.

The inspectors glanced at each other before stepping back, their faces a mix of caution and fear. One of them spoke up, his voice barely above a whisper, "What’s bad is... because you’re the Demon King’s husband, we naturally don’t dare to touch you..."

Elliot’s eyes widened in shock. He blinked rapidly, his mind racing to process the statement. His heart skipped a beat as another inspector chimed in, his tone filled with genuine dread, "Who knows if punishing him will incur Azreal’s wrath upon us? I can’t bear this risk."

"Yes, better to act like this whole incident never happened," another agreed, nodding nervously.

Elliot watched in stunned silence as the inspectors’ fear of Azreal overpowered their sense of duty. Even the strict inspector, who had been so adamant about punishing him earlier, seemed to hesitate. His face contorted with anger, but it was evident that he too was afraid of Azreal’s retaliation.

As the inspectors hesitated, the strict one—the leader among them—stood rigid, his face contorted with fury. His fists clenched at his sides, his knuckles turning white as he fought to maintain his composure. It was clear he was struggling, wanting to assert his authority but held back by the same fear gripping the others. His jaw tightened, a vein throbbing at his temple as he looked at Elliot with a glare so intense it could’ve burned through steel.

But even he couldn’t defy Azreal’s shadow. As much as he wanted to punish Elliot for breaking the rules, he knew he couldn’t risk provoking the Demon King’s wrath. With a bitter snort, the strict inspector finally relented. "Count your stars lucky... Today is your lucky day. But don’t think for one second that if this happens again, we’ll let you off the hook. If I catch you in another dorm room that isn’t yours, I won’t hesitate to proceed with your punishment." His voice was laced with frustration, but there was no denying the fear that lingered beneath his harsh tone.

Elliot could hardly believe his ears. Relief flooded his body, his knees feeling weak from the close call. He managed to keep his composure, his face breaking into a wide smile as he quickly nodded rapidly, his head bobbing up and down like a puppet on strings. "Yes, thank you very much! I promise it won’t ever happen again!" He didn’t even care if he sounded overly eager or desperate. In that moment, he was just thankful to escape the horrendous punishment he had heard about.

The strict inspector glared at him, his disdain evident as he scoffed, "Better so." With that, he turned sharply, his coat billowing behind him as he stormed out of the room.

The other inspectors followed, their footsteps hurried as if they were fleeing from a cursed place.

Suddenly, a thought struck him, and he called out, "Wait!" The inspectors paused, their shoulders stiffening as they reluctantly turned to look at him. Elliot hesitated for a second before asking, "What about my complaints about my dorm room’s bad condi—"

BAM!

The door slammed shut in his face, cutting him off mid-sentence. The sound reverberated through the room, leaving Elliot standing there, dumbfounded and speechless. He blinked, his mouth hanging open as he stared at the closed door. They were gone. They had run away without even letting him finish his sentence.

A heavy sigh escaped his lips, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "Well... I tried," he muttered, his voice tinged with disappointment. He had been hoping to use his newfound ’immunity’ to fix his living conditions, but it seemed his luck only went so far.

He felt a shiver run down his spine as he processed the situation. He had been saved... not by his own wit or charm, but by the sheer power of Azreal’s name. As much as he hated to admit it, it was Azreal’s status as his husband that had protected him. A complex mixture of relief and bitterness surged within him, his emotions swirling in chaos.

Turning around, he was met with Charles’ amused expression. Charles leaned casually against the wall, his arms crossed and a smirk playing on his lips. His eyes gleamed with mischief as he teased, "Seems having a Demon King husband is doing more good than harm, huh?" Charles teased, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

Elliot’s face flushed slightly as he looked away. "You think so?" he muttered, his voice carrying a hint of embarrassment. He didn’t want to admit it, but Charles was right. Azreal’s name alone had saved him from a punishment that could’ve very well ended his life, and painstakingly so, it wasn’t the first time he had helped him out of trouble.

But before he could dwell on the thought for too long, another question popped into his mind. His eyes widened as he spun around to face Charles. "Wait, you didn’t answer my question earlier!"

Charles raised an eyebrow, his expression lazy and unconcerned as he plopped down on his massive bed, sprawling out comfortably. "Which question?" he asked, feigning ignorance.

Elliot’s cheeks tinged pink as he recalled their earlier conversation. "I asked if you were gay," he repeated, his tone more serious now. "But you just gave me a death glare without answering, so I’m asking again. Are you gay?"

Charles looked at him, his face a perfect mask of indifference. His dark silver eyes sparkled with amusement as he lazily leaned back, propping himself up on his elbows. A smirk played on his lips as he responded, "What do you think?"
