Booking Glory-Chapter 118: New Responsibilities
Rob took the seat calmly and looked at Mr. Gibson. Mr. Gibson watched Rob for a while, before letting out a sigh. He massaged his brows a little and spoke.
"First, that issue in your contract, it was Robin’s work. He handles the drafting of contracts and all the other stuff regarding them. I wasn’t aware of the situation till it came to light yesterday," Mr. Gibson spoke in a guilty manner.
Rob inwardly snorted. The old fox was putting the entire blame on Robin. He believed the first two statements, but he didn’t believe that Mr. Gibson wasn’t aware of the irregularities in his contract.
"I understand," Rob nodded, as it was the only thing he could do at this time.
"I hope there is no dissatisfaction on your end. I have personally reviewed the contract yesterday. There were no other issues with it. If you want, we can redraft the contract and add that clause."
"It is fine Mr. Gibson. That’s a minor issue. We don’t need to waste time with that. I am sure there are other pressing issues for you to deal with."
"But, I am worried about Diana and Marie’s contract status. If there is any issue with it, I hope I will be notified early so that I can change my plans accordingly," Rob diverted the topic skillfully.
He wasn’t stupid enough to willingly tie himself in these uncertain times. He could see Mr. Gibson’s lips thin a bit after hearing him speak. It was clear that he was hoping Rob would be willing to amend the contract.
"You don’t need to worry about that. Desmond had already taken the initiative to reach out to them. They will be coming in to renegotiate their contracts today," Mr. Gibson smiled, while waving his hands.
"In that case, I am relieved," Rob replied genuinely.
Rob didn’t care much about Marie Dawson. She was just there to fill up numbers. He could easily find someone else to fill that spot or even reduce the wrestlers in the match.
However, it was a different story with Diana. He had invested a substantial amount of storytime in Diana. It would be a great blow to lose her. Diana’s story was just starting. There was still a lot he could do with her character.
Furthermore, after the extreme PPV, Dacey would take some time off to film the movie role she obtained as well. If Diana left, that would mean Rob will not have both Dacey and Diana for several weeks at the start of next year.
That meant, there would be no continuity in the segments he would put out during that time. And the other women weren’t built up enough to sustain the audience’s interest. It would be like building from scratch once more.
So, he was genuinely relieved to hear that Diana will not be gone. However, Rob also firmed up his decision to build up Evelyn and Selena quickly as well. That way, he will still have wrestlers to use if any unforeseen situation arose.
"Speaking of the women’s division, how do you feel about getting another extra ten minutes at the upcoming PPV?" Mr. Gibson asked suddenly, taking Rob off-guard.
"Mr. Gibson, we already have forty minutes on the card for us. We don’t need anything more," Rob recovered immediately and refused outright.
Are you kidding? 40 minutes was already stretching the capabilities of the women in the locker room. If it was any other PPV, Rob would have gladly accepted the extra time. But, not for this one.
"Are you sure?" Mr. Gibson asked in surprise.
"Mr.Gibson, we have our hands full. Adding more time will only be detrimental to the current plans," Rob replied without hesitation.
"Then, if you are sure, then it is fine. Rob, you have done a fine job in booking the women’s division till now. So, I have decided to give you a few more responsibilities. Let’s see how you handle them," Mr. Gibson said in a mysterious tone, causing Rob to look up.
"Thank you, Mr. Gibson. I will try to live up to your expectations," Rob said humbly, while feeling inwardly delighted.
"Starting today, you will handle some of Robin’s responsibilities, you will be responsible for overseeing the training center. You will be responsible for helping the trainees transition into in-ring competition. You will be guiding them in honing their in-ring psychology, promo abilities, and presentation on shows."
Rob felt a little surprised. He wasn’t expecting Mr. Gibson to give him such a role. If anything, he expected Mr. Gibson to give him more booking responsibilities.
"Mr. Gibson, I am not sure about this," Rob spoke hesitantly. "I have no in-ring experience. Also, I’m young as well. It would be better for Mr. Wolfe to handle this."
Being the overseer of the training center was a big responsibility. As the overseer, he will have enough power to rival the Head Trainer. With just one year under his belt in the industry, he would not be able to convince the trainers and trainees. This looked like a huge drag to Rob.
"Desmond will be busy with other work in the near future. You don’t need to worry. I am not asking you to train them. I am asking you to help them up their game when it comes to presenting them in front of the crowd," Mr. Gibson replied nonchalantly.
"Moreover, I have seen your work with the women’s division. Their progress in this aspect is phenomenal under you. You just need to share your insights with them. The trainers will take care of the training aspects."
So, it was a glorified consultant role. Rob was a bit relieved to hear that. He knew that his current prestige wouldn’t be enough to convince the trainers who had been in this industry for a long time to listen to him. This was better.
This was a relatively lighter burden added to his current role. Moreover, his recent success in making the women’s division popular would net him enough prestige to control a bunch of rookies, at the least..
As long as there wasn’t any power struggle involved with the trainers at the training center, Rob was fine with it.
At most, he would visit the training center once or twice a week, keep a track of the trainees progress, and have a discussion with them occasionally to open their minds.
"In that case I see no problem, Mr. Gibson," Rob replied. "However, Robin..."
Rob hedged trying to glean some information about Robin’s current standing in the company. Apart from putting the blame on Robin when they initially began the discussion, Mr. Gibson had stayed clear from that topic since then.
It was clear that Mr. Gibson was divvying up the responsibilities Robin held in LWC. The responsibility that was handed to him was a part of Robin’s role prior to this.
Rob deduced that Mr. Gibson was splitting Robin’s power into small chunks and assigning them to other people. It was a smart strategy to reduce Robin’s power and influence in the company.
"Don’t worry about Robin," Mr. Gibson waved away his concerns nonchalantly. "He will not be working for LWC very long. However, keep that information to yourself for now."
Rob merely nodded, while showing a surprised expression outwards. While he had expected such an outcome when he sent that message, he didn’t think Mr. Gibson would be this decisive.
Because Rob knew that while cutting off the rot in LWC named Robin was the right approach, reality had several complications to do that. The most important complication was making a move on Robin would offend Steven completely.
It would be better if Mr. Gibson bid his time and made his move later, but doing so now will impose more pressure on Steven. Steven would remember this grudge and wouldn’t let LWC go after he recovers.
So, Mr. Gibson’s decisive actions surprised Rob a little bit. Rob figured that Mr. Gibson was now currently trying to split Robin’s responsibilities into small parts and assign them to various people. Once he confirms that things would run smoothly, he would decisively fire Robin.
It was a bold plan providing a swift solution to LWC’s problems. But, it carried its own risks as well. However, Mr. Gibson seemed intent on taking this risk. But, it was also in line with Mr. Gibson’s penchant to take gambles at critical moments.
Rob left Mr. Gibson’s room with his mind filled with myriad thoughts. He didn’t know why he wasn’t given more booking power after he had already proved himself. It really made him feel a bit weird.
Why wasn’t he given more booking power?
Rob felt that this question was important. Something within him nagged and refused to let go. The more he thought, the more he frowned.
Something was off.
And Rob needed to figure out what it was. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Taking a deep breath, Rob opened the door to his office and entered inside.
