Chapter 261: Sister In Law

The grand, luxurious outline of the Sterling estate was brightly lit, glowing warmly against the fading evening sky.

As the car drove into the smooth circular driveway paved with patterned stone, Anne could see several sleek sports cars parked prominently in front of the entrance. A white one on the left, a black one in the center, and an orange one on the right. Each one of the cars exuded prestige.

Anne wondered what could be going on at the Sterling estate tonight, and judging from the fact that they had called for an emergency family dinner, it felt like it could either be a celebratory news, or a bad one.

Anne turned to Andrew who was sitting next to her in the car,

"It seems like something is going on tonight, do you know why they called for an emergency dinner?"

Andrew’s brows drew together subtly.

"I don’t know why, but we’ll find out."

Anne nodded and when they were about to walk inside the estate, Andrew suddenly grabbed her hand holding it in his, he didn’t give any explanation but Anne thought it might be to hold up a harmonious look between them since they were already married.

Earlier, it had taken him a while to meet her after the driver had sent her down the mountains. She had curiously asked why he stayed behind and he told her that he wanted to check some things.

Anne didn’t dwell on it too much and decided to drop the topic. At the time she didn’t know why she had joked with him by saying, 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"Were you working again, why do you spend all your time working anyway?"

He had grinned so easily as if liking how she had freely spoken to him.

"I’ll work less if you want me to."

Anne hadn’t said anything to that as he led her into the helicopter which wasn’t as nerve wracking as the first time and securely buckled her in safely. Mid flight he had leaned closer to show her several beautiful sights that could be seen and appreciated from up high.

Walking into the grand entrance hallway in the estate, Anne almost stopped in her tracks when she locked eyes with someone familiar in the room.

This familiar woman was standing next to Gabriel.

Clara?

What was she doing here? Anne wondered but then realized that Clara was somewhat acquainted with the Sterling family in the past so it wasn’t strange that she would be here, however, there was something strange in the way she and Gabriel stood next to each other. Clara had her arms wound around Gabriel’s arm so intimately, it was hard to believe that there was such intimacy between them when they barely used to be seen together in the past.

Both of them were talking to Jennifer, Micheal Sterling’s wife and the way they both spoke and smiled at one another, one would almost believe they were a couple.

No, actually anyone who didn’t know any better would be fully convinced that they were a couple but Anne doubted it because she had seen how infatuated with Andrew Clara was, even if she had decided to let him go after the incident at that banquet the previous time, she couldn’t have easily gotten over Andrew this fast.

"Ah, my beloved brother is here!" Gabriel suddenly exclaimed with a wry smile on his lips, "I’m offended brother, you’re late to the meeting and you came empty handed, did you forget to bring a gift for your new sister in law?"

Hearing the words sister in law, Anne’s eyes immediately drifted to Clara.

The latter looked excessively calm, there was a gentle smile on her lips and her eyes were heavily fixed on Andrew as if trying to gauge his expression after hearing the mind blowing news Gabriel just shared. To be honest, Anne was very shocked.

If she understood Gabriel’s words correctly, it meant he was currently married. A sister in law could only mean him being married since Donald was still young to have a wife.

Does that mean he actually married Clara?

Ever since Gabriel said those words, not once had Clara torn her eyes away from Andrew, she seemed to be waiting to hear him say something.

"Oh, silly me, it slipped my mind that I didn’t actually invite you for the wedding. You see we were both in a hurry so we chose to get married as soon as possible."

Andrew finally said something after Gabriel’s words seemed to fully sink in.

"You got yourself married?" He asked yet there was no astonishment or surprise in his tone.

"Obviously. I don’t need to introduce you to my wife since you already know her."

Andrew’s lips quirked up, "You were always known to make questionable life decisions Gabriel, I guess it’s still your trademark."

Gabriel’s expression changed slightly. Andrew had just openly insinuated that him getting married was a bad decision, but one couldn’t tell if he were referring to the impulsiveness of the decision or his choice of a bride.

"Gabriel is a smart and strategic man, he was just misunderstood in the past. I assure you, us getting married is a wonderful decision." Clara chimed in like a wife coming to her husband’s defence.

Anne narrowed her eyes at Clara’s words. She found it odd that Clara didn’t seem surprised to see her walk into the estate with Andrew. Her being Andrew’s wife was still a secret to the outside world and most definitely to Clara as well, so how come she was acting so naturally as if she already knew that Anne and Andrew were husband and wife?

But even more baffling was the sudden change of things. She liked Andrew but suddenly married Gabriel, all this could mean one thing. There was a hidden scheme underneath and all Clara was doing right now was putting up an act.

Actually, this little act, Anne would have been convinced by it if she didn’t catch how many times Clara’s gaze would flick to Andrew’s direction, it was akin to someone seeking for attention.

Evidently, Clara had no feelings for Gabriel and Anne felt that Gabriel felt nothing for Clara as well, if that was the case, why did they get married?

Something suspicious was going on between them, but Anne couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was.

Elder Sterling came downstairs at this moment and everyone proceeded to the dining room where they made a toast to Gabriel’s marriage. Elder Sterling didn’t look like he was in support of the sudden union yet he didn’t seem against it as well.

After dinner, they began to have talks with Andrew about how Gabriel would be given a new position in the company but Anne wasn’t following the conversation so she quietly excused herself to go to the bathroom, she didn’t expect to find Clara outside the bathroom door immediately she came outside.

Clara was leaning against the wall swirling a glass of red wine in her hand, when she saw Anne, her eyes suddenly lit up and she smiled brightly.

"Anne, I’ve been waiting for you for quite a while. Do you have a minute to talk?"

Anne felt wary around her that she didn’t even want to be here talking to her, so she immediately declined,

"No I don’t, please excuse me." She made to walk away but Clara blocked her way by standing in front of her.

"I won’t take too much of your time. I just want to apologize to you."

Anne paused in shock as she heard that.

"I want you to know that I regret everything I did, and I have no plans of pursuing what I used to feel for Andrew anymore, I’m choosing to let him go because I found out that he already got married to you, Gabriel told me about it.

"You were right before, I only tried to hurt you because I had feelings for Andrew, though I can’t say my feelings for him are gone now, I have decided to let him go. I hope you can believe me, I’m married now, I don’t love Gabriel but I want to use this as a new start, to change all the things my infatuation with Andrew made me do to you. You didn’t deserve any of that, I’m sorry."

Anne was taken aback by her lengthy apology for a while, she sighed softly before opening her mouth to reply by saying...
