Chapter 28

Seraphina

Moments later after I had finished breakfast, Irene came in to inform me that I had a visitor. I granted her permission to let the person in, but part of me wondered who could it be.

Their face was hidden beneath the hood, shrouding their identity. A strange unease crept over me. Who was that?

She moved closer, standing before me, then with a slow, deliberate motion, the figure pulled back the hood.

My eyes widened in shock and breath hitched.

It was her.

The witch doctor.

Why....was she here? How?

"Your Highness, it’s been a while," she greeted, her tone eager as she bowed respectfully.

I was caught off guard and speechless, not knowing what to say.

"Lady Hazel..." I managed to say, my voice unsteady. "What... what are you doing here?"

She smiled softly, a teasing glint in her eyes. "Aren’t I welcome here, Your Highness?"

I blinked, still caught off guard. Hazel wasn’t just a doctor—she was like family. Though she had no idea why I had really come here, she had warned me to be careful. I knew she was worried.

"No... it’s just..." I rarely found myself flustered, but I hadn’t expected this surprise.

"I came to check on you, Sera. I heard you fell ill yesterday."

I stiffened. How did she find out? Did Rhydian send for her? But... why would he? He could have easily summoned any random doctor. So why go through the trouble of personally requesting Hazel?

"It’s true, but how did you know?" I hesitated before turning to Irene. "Umm... Irene, can you excuse us?"

She bowed respectfully and left without a word. The moment the door shut, Hazel stepped closer, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

"I wasn’t expecting the vampire king to personally ask me for a favor," she admitted. "He even made sure I didn’t inform your sister because he didn’t want her to worry. Honestly, I was surprised at how considerate he sounded."

At the mention of Rhydian, my heart did a weird flutter, why does this keep happening.

I brushed off the thoughts of him, this was nothing, he wants my help, that’s the only reason he would go this far, he only does things to his advantage.

"That’s right. Can you check what happened? I think I almost died yesterday."

I held out my wrist, and Hazel placed two fingers on my pulse, closing her eyes as she focused. Seconds passed, and then her eyes snapped open, widening in disbelief.

"This... this is impossible," she muttered under her breath.

My stomach tightened. "What is?"

"I need to be sure," she said, her expression turning serious. "Sit down, Sera. I’ll perform Vitae Resonance to confirm my findings."

I didn’t argue and sat down on the floor, folding my legs. Hazel mirrored my position, her expression unreadable. Despite my growing unease, I stretched out my palm, and she placed hers over mine.

"Close your eyes, and try not to think of too many things," she instructed.

Easier said than done. My mind was already racing. Still, I obeyed, shutting my eyes as she began to murmur incantations—spells I didn’t recognize. The air around us shifted, charged with something heavy and unseen.

Then, without warning, a powerful force erupted from my body.

A violent surge of energy blasted Hazel backward, sending her crashing against the ground.

My eyes snapped open, my heart pounding. What just happened?

"Hazel!" I scrambled to my feet, rushing to her side. "Are you okay? That wasn’t me, I swear!" My voice wavered with panic as I helped her up.

"I know," she muttered weakly, her breathing ragged.

I swallowed hard, a knot tightening in my chest. Just what the hell was happening to me?

"So... what did you find?" I asked, trying to sound steady, but my voice betrayed the unease gnawing at me. My pulse raced as I searched her face for answers.

Hazel exhaled, looking at me with something close to disbelief.

"You’ve become a beast, Sera," she finally said. "An unstoppable beast."

A chill ran down my spine. "Beast? What do you mean?"

"Not literally," she clarified. "You know what powers your parents wielded, right?"

I nodded. Everyone knew. My mother commanded ice, my father wielded fire. Two opposing elements, impossible to coexist within a single witch. Even my sister, Freya, had inherited nothing from them.

"Well, Sera... you can wield both now."

My breath caught. My mind stilled for a fraction of a second before it spiraled into chaos.

Both? No. That wasn’t possible.

"But... witches can only wield one ability," I said, my voice laced with disbelief. "Freya took nothing from our parents, so how can I possibly wield both?"

Hazel’s lips pressed into a thin line. "Something acted as a catalyst to activate your abilities... something I don’t understand."

A cold sense of dread crawled through me as my thoughts raced.

Was it Rhydian’s blood?

The realization hit me like a punch to the gut.

What the hell was in that blood of his?

"What foreign thing did you consume these past few days, Sera? I need to know." Hazel’s voice was calm, but there was an edge of concern beneath it.

I hesitated. Should I tell her? Would it be okay?

But there was no point in hiding it. If anyone could help me understand what was happening, it was Hazel.

"Actually... Rhydian fed me his blood," I admitted.

Hazel’s brows furrowed. "Who is Rhydian?"

I swallowed. "The... vampire king."

The moment the words left my mouth, Hazel’s grip on my hand loosened before she abruptly pulled away, shifting back as if I had just turned into something unrecognizable.

"How are you still alive?" she whispered, her expression frozen in shock.

My stomach tightened. "What do you mean?" 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Hazel’s gaze locked onto mine, her voice low but urgent. "Our blood acts as a booster for vampires, heightening their abilities and granting them longer life. But vampire blood does the opposite for us, Sera. Their blood is poison to witches. Even a single drop can kill us."

Her words sent a shiver down my spine.

If that was true... then why was I still breathing?

"If you’re still alive after drinking his blood, it means..." Hazel’s voice trailed off, her expression shifting into something unreadable. "That man isn’t a pure vampire."

My thoughts raced back to what Dorian had said before—something about me consuming a mix dragon and vampire blood which acted as a poison repellent. Could that really be true?

I turned back to Hazel. "Is his blood the catalyst you were talking about?"

She exhaled slowly, her uncertainty plain on her face. "I don’t know what to think at this point, Sera. But one thing is certain..." She hesitated, as if weighing her next words. "The two of you together have become unstoppable. From what I know, Rhydian might have three bloodlines flowing in his veins. If that’s true..."

She met my gaze, the weight of her words sinking deep into my chest.

"Then that man is even more of a beast than you, child."
