Chapter 283: Chapter 283

Lyra

"Damon!" I screamed so loud my throat burned instantly, but I kept going because maybe if I yelled loud enough he would answer me, maybe if I said his name enough times he would magically appear in front of me like nothing happened and tell me I was being dramatic again. "Damon! Damon, where are you? Damon!"

My heart was beating so fast it felt like it was going to break out of my chest completely, like it didn’t want to be in my body anymore if Damon wasn’t okay. My hands were shaking so much I could barely shove my hair out of my face as I stumbled through the hallway because all I could see in my head was blood. His blood.

And then I saw her.

His mother.

"Lyra, Lyra, what’s wrong? Calm down!" she said, reaching for me like that was even possible right now when I was one breath away from completely losing my mind.

I skidded to a stop right in front of her, my whole chest heaving like I had run a marathon, my hair sticking to my face because I was sweating even though I was freezing, and I just blurted everything out in one long, panicked breath because there was no stopping it.

"I heard gunshots!" I practically screamed, my voice cracking in the middle because my throat hurt so bad but I didn’t care. "Where is Damon? Where is he? Tell me where he is right now! I heard it, I swear I heard it, it was loud, it was right outside, I know it was, something happened, something bad, I can feel it in my chest, I can feel it in my stomach, where is he, where is Damon?"

"Lyra, slow down.."

"No! No, I will not slow down!" I was almost crying now, my voice shaking so hard I barely sounded like me. "Do not tell me to slow down when I just heard a gunshot and Damon is out there and nobody is telling me anything!

"Just tell me where he is, please, please, I have to see him, I need to know he’s okay, I need to see him with my own eyes because my wolf is going crazy right now and I feel like I’m about to actually pass out!"

She grabbed my arms because I was shaking so much I couldn’t stand still, but it didn’t help, nothing helped, because I couldn’t breathe right, I couldn’t think right, I couldn’t do anything except picture Damon on the ground and that was killing me, it was literally killing me.

"Lyra, listen to me," his mother said firmly, holding my arms tighter because at this point I was shaking so hard I could barely stay on my own two feet. "Calm down, sweetheart. Damon is perfectly fine. He has gone out with the guards, okay? He is fine. Please, please stop crying."

"The gunshot you heard," his mother added quickly, her voice softer now because she could see how wrecked I looked, "it was from Daren. He’s out there doing target practice with a gun. That’s all it was. Please don’t get worried, all right? For your babies. You have to calm down for them."

I just froze.

Like actually froze right there in the hallway with my mouth open and my hands halfway in the air because my brain was not processing any of that properly.

"Target practice?" I repeated. "Did you just say target practice? As in, fake shooting? As in, Daren out there playing action hero while I’m in here about to pass out thinking my entire life just ended? Are you serious right now? Because I swear my soul just left my body, ran three laps around this house, and fell into a ditch somewhere."

I dragged both hands down my face so hard it felt like I was trying to peel my own panic off. "Do you understand what my heart just went through in the last thirty seconds?

"I saw Damon dead, buried, his funeral already happening in my head, me standing there pregnant and traumatized giving a speech about the love of my life who died tragically young, all because Daren wanted to shoot at some random cans or trees or whatever he’s aiming at out there? Are you kidding me?"

I was pacing now because my body refused to stay still. My wolf was still growling in the back of my head like she hadn’t gotten the memo that Damon was fine, and my chest hurt from how hard I’d been crying in the five minutes since the gunshot.

"Lyra, breathe," his mother said again, reaching for my hands because she probably thought I was seconds away from actually fainting. "He is fine. Damon is fine. Daren was just practicing. You need to calm down for your babies. They do not need this kind of stress."

"Oh my God, my babies," I said, pressing a hand to my stomach like I was talking to them directly now. "Do you babies hear this? Your daddy’s fucking twin just took ten years off my life for fun. Do you know what kind of emotional damage you have inherited from this side of the family? He is running around with guns like it’s the Wild West, and me? I’m in here about to actually ascend to the afterlife because my heart can’t take this kind of drama."

I spun back around to his mother because my hands were shaking too much to stay at my sides.
