Bride To His Darkness-Chapter 273: Lucy’s Story
Chapter 273: Lucy’s Story
—--
"What do you think? I’ve never heard of the blood moon halting before." Samantha inquired from Lucy after returning to the library with her.
They both took their seats on the vacant chair, seeking privacy.
Lucy pushed a finger on her right cheek, her eyes distant, as if she was busy pondering over the matter, but when Lucy’s eyes diverted to the concerned look on her friend’s delicate feature, she waved her hands, conveying Samantha should not worry.
"Everything will be fine, His Majesty would surely know what the problem is as the blood moon is more connected to his kind." She leaned forward, crossing her hands on the table, "You know, His Majesty already has enough on his plate to leave him stressed, where will he find strength if he looks at his beautiful wife to see her wearing a dull expression."
She shook her head, "cheer up."
"I guess you’re right about that." Samantha tried to bring herself to smile once more, and her heart inexplicably fluttered each time she got referred to as Ivan’s wife. She was glad she had someone like Lucy who worked such magic on her, and there was a chance that she could be worrying for nothing. This anxiety trait– Maurice definitely rubbed this bad habit on her before leaving.
"Are you alright? You seem lost yourself?" Samantha, who noticed Lucy drifting into space simultaneously, had to inquire from her if everything was fine. It was unlike Lucy to seem so detached, and that bothered her. After that day she was called to present herself to the court, Lucy’s presence had grown frequent with her, and she did not like it.
"Lucy."
Snapping her out of her train of thoughts, Lucy’s brown eyes moved to gaze at Samantha who raised both eyebrows at her, prompting her to speak. She could see the genuine concern reflecting in her emerald eyes, and that gave Lucy the little push she needed to say,
"As a matter of fact, I do need someone I can talk to, or else I might go crazy and do something foolish." She waved her right hand as a gesture, as if swatting a fly away.
"Trouble in paradise?"
"How do I start? This is so complicated even for me." Lucy looked around to make sure there was no one present, and luckily, Samantha’s ’new bodyguard’ was nowhere in sight today. Returning her attention to Samantha who had subconsciously looked behind her as well, Lucy took a deep breath and reclined against her seat.
"Remember, you asked about my lineage which I... evidently tried to avoid answering once." She began softly, and Samantha nodded with raised eyebrows, as if suddenly recalling that day in Maurice chamber when Lucy had successfully escaped her clutches. If Ivan hadn’t sent for her, she would have known about Lucy’s past by now.
"Yes, you said we’d save the conversation for another day, are you finally going to tell me?" Samantha leaned forward on the table, her eyes sparkling when Lucy nodded, and the maiden inexplicably felt cold as she began her story.
"I told you I come from the Kingdom of Caledonia. The truth is, my parents were the rulers of that kingdom, and I was once a princess who... was, unfortunately, birthed by them." She revealed with her gaze low, and Samantha’s glazed eyes raked Lucy for some seconds. As if her words were just starting to sink in, a shocking gasp escaped Samantha’s lips, whilst she withdrew against her seat, and for a moment, Samantha had to stay quiet in order to fathom what she just heard.
"You’re a Princess?"
"’Was’ a Princess, it’s past tense now." For the first time, Samantha noticed a flicker of sadness in Lucy’s eyes, and then she continued. "I was a Princess, but not the kind with a happily ever after. You see, my parents were the type who held a strong belief in our Kingdom’s culture. In our culture, if it hasn’t changed yet, it was a belief that any man of royalty should birth a son before anyone else, that is if they wanted the Kingdom to have a prosperous reign– my parents, they wanted a son, an heir that would take the throne. but when I was born, they were disappointed that I turned out to be a girl."
Lucy took a deep, shaky breath as she began to recount her past, "my Father never wanted a girl child, and at a tender age, I could tell he never wanted to have anything to do with me. He called me a prodigal child, a curse to their lineage. He blamed my Mother for giving birth to me and bringing me to this world, and my Mother blamed me for ruining her marriage. Bullshit, right?" ƒrēenovelkiss.com
She chuckled softly, but Samantha certainly didn’t find it funny, rather, she was awestruck by Lucy’s past. "But that’s so unfair to you. Why would they do that? It’s not like the heavens called us out and made us choose which gender we wished to be born into."
"It didn’t matter, they needed someone to blame, and I became that person." Lucy combed her fingers into her dark hair. "There were cultural traditions, ancient customs that demanded a male heir to be the first child– it was made by my ancestral parents, and just because they were lucky enough to have gotten a male child. My parents were bound by those traditions, blinded would be the perfect word. You know, I was still little when they made me feel like a burden that they were forced to carry, but growing up, I got sick of their attitude."
"I did things, bad things, scandalous things. I was the ’rouged Princess’, but I was so infuriated by their questionable actions that I grew tired of how they made me feel, and in a fit of rage, I decided to prove them true. It seemed as if my Father had been waiting for me to do something stupid at the age which I was, cause he used that as his great excuse to give me away as a token. I was exiled from my Palace, from my family, and from the life I was born into. I was brought to GreenHollow, where I started living my life as a maid, so you see, I felt more at home here than I ever once did in my Kingdom. Wait– are you crying right now?"
Lucy’s eyes snapped wide in surprise when she saw Samantha’s eyes glistening with tears, and the embarrassed woman had quickly wiped it away before defending, "how can I not? It must have been incredibly painful for you to be a victim to such. You didn’t deserve any of that, and what a loss they made, they had no idea of the gift they were blessed with."
