Chapter 275: Figure Hiding In The Pillars

Blinking his eyes, the memories immediately swiped from his head like a vanishing mist, whilst returning the vampire back to the present. When his crimson eyes narrowed suspiciously at the rose in his hand, a petal, which was at the brink of falling, eventually dropped to the ground close to Duncan’s feet.

"What the–?" Duncan murmured cryptically, still tranced from what he had seen, and he quickly dropped the rose back on the table.

She gave up her life to save Ivan, but that man... Marius... who is he?

At the royal garden, Madeline had taken her seat on a bench with her son who sat right beside her. The crisp breeze of Autumn swept through the garden, and she watched, with curious eyes as the servants of the Palace gathered, their feet, as they walked by, crunched on the falling leaves.

They moved through the garden, each with a wicker basket in hand, ready to pluck the fruits and vegetables that had reached their peak. The apple trees, heavy with ripe fruits, stood tall behind Madeline, whilst she stood up to pluck the juiciest apples, their red and green skin glistening in the soft sunlight.

"Hmmm...?"

Her son’s big, round, amber-brown eyes followed her, and she knew immediately what he wanted each time he gave her one of those harmless stares. He looked so much like his Father that it made her jealous some of the time. She had the right to feel jealous, she did all the hard work and carried him for eight good months, but he shows up as a carbon copy of someone else.

"Here, this one is good." she handed Alain the apple she had plucked for him, "but you have to wash–"

And he bit into it.

"What did I say about–" Madeline had to facepalm upon realizing she was nearly raising her voice. It felt like she was being punished for all the times she didn’t listen to her parents when she was still tender, and she couldn’t recall how many times she was scolded for eating fruits she refused to wash first. Alain spat out the little part he had bit on the apple, and he was not one to object against his Mother’s warning.

When Cassian made his way to the garden, he joined his wife who was still giving their son the motherly glares, and he noticed how his adorable son didn’t bite into the apple he was holding anymore. He simply clutched it in his small hands, darting one-sided looks at his Mother, his legs crossed.

When he got closer, his wife’s eyes shifted to him, but he diverted his attention to his son.

"My little Duke, what you got there?" Squatting before the fluffy haired boy, Alain showed him the fruit he had bit into.

"Why aren’t you eating? Does it taste bad?"

"I didn’t... wash it." He admitted with a quiet, child-like voice, but Cassian’s Amber-brown eyes scrutinized the apple, as if trying to find any germs on it. He lifted his gaze and met the eyes of his son, who blinked confusedly with his head tilted curiously to the side.

"Was it picked from the ground?"

He shook his head.

"Then feel free to eat your apple," he ruffled his son’s fluffy hair, "I know your Mother scares you." He leaned close and whispered, "she scares me too."

"Cassian!"

"As I was saying listen to your lovely Mother, she knows best" the young man immediately switched tongue, "next time, wash your fruits before eating them, it’s called perfect hygiene. She’s so kind-hearted that she’s letting you off the hook today, but just this once, okay?" He winked playfully at his son who smiled and continued to bite at his apple.

Going up to his wife, Cassian cupped his wife’s stoic face in his palm and kissed her puckered lips. A kiss was all it took to leave the woman’s face painted in a pink hue, and he smiled charmingly.

"I have something to discuss privately with you, come."

Holding his wife’s hand in his, Madeline gave her son the looks that told him he shouldn’t go anywhere till she returns. When he obediently nodded, it reassured her heart, whilst she left with Cassian who didn’t think the garden would pose any kind of threat to his son, but they didn’t go too far, as his wife still wanted to keep an eye on their little one.

"Are you done helping His Majesty?" She asked her husband, and when a few servants passed by with their wicker basket filled with the harvest, they greeted the couple. Cassian’s eyes subconsciously followed them, quite surprised by the bountiful harvest, but Madeline, who pictured his attention differently, grabbed his chin and demandingly fixed his attention back on her.

"You were saying?" She inquired once more, and Cassian, who realized too late the wrong impression he had made, smiled embarrassedly before proceeding with the matter that brought him here in the first place.

"I didn’t help His Majesty completely, the astrophysicist showed up and delivered a... rather odd news." freeweɓnovel-cøm

"What did he say?"

"I don’t think we’ll be leaving GreenHollow anytime soon, the blood moon, for phenomenal reasons, has come to an abrupt stop." He dropped.

"Abrupt stop?" Madeline exclaimed with wide eyes, as if she understood, and Cassian simply nodded.

"Yes."

"That doesn’t even make sense." She murmured, as if assuming the astrophysicist was not seeing things clearly.

Meanwhile, Alain remained seated on the bench, his eyes watching the servants who carefully cut out rows of pumpkins from their vines. As they worked, the servants chatted and laughed with one another, but Alain leaned his back on the bench, finding the view a little boring. He was reminded of their own bright garden back in Carmarthen, and when the season of harvest came, his Mother was the one who always supervised it in her free time.

If his Father was at home during that time, he’d help her as well. Unknown to him, his little pink lips curved slightly at the remembrance of his parents in the garden together. Even at his age, he knew that he had the most shameless Father, and the best one too.

When he happily continued to scrutinize the garden area, his brown eyes inadvertently caught sight of a figure that stood between two pillars.

"Huh?"

To confirm that he wasn’t seeing things, his eyes moved back slowly, and there it stood, in the middle of the pillar was a tall figure, all dressed in a black cloak that glinted with sparks of fire. They appeared magical, as if the cloaks weren’t ordinary, and that had piqued his attention.

Alain had a unique trait, and he wasn’t easily frightened by things like this, rather, the sight of it had intrigued him, as he had never come across such a being before. Slowly, the being lifted his hand and beckoned him forward. Due to where he stood, his presence could not be detected by anyone except Alain, and when the little boy realized he was the one being called, he dropped his unfinished apple and got down from the bench.

As he began to move, thinking it could be someone he knew from within the Palace, his Mother’s voice rang out from where she stood, making him stop in his gait.

"What did I say about staying put?"
