Chapter 357: We’ve Been Tricked

"Trying to merge? What does that even mean?" Tobias arched a confused brow, his gaze shifting between the head of Marius and the alarmed look on Ivan’s pensive face. Of course he knew what merging meant, but in this scenario, he wasn’t sure about what it specifically entailed.

When Ivan gave no response, he exchanged quizzical glances with Duncan, and the vampire shook his head slightly, conveying he was equally at loss in terms of what Ivan was trying to tell them.

Ivan in question, moved cautiously towards the head of Marius, and it reeked with an indigestible odor, prompting him to cover his nose. His gaze scrutinized how the head was starting to rotten gradually, asides the black streaks of veins pulsing from Marius’s emotionless face.

From what he knew, the body was supposed to stay fresh as long as Marius’s soul was still intact. He wasn’t dead, he still possessed this body, so by no chance should his head rot unless—!!

"That bitch!" A look of fury flashed in his eyes as he hissed out, his anger replaced by a sudden apprehension, and he immediately exited the tent. Tobias and Duncan exchanged worried glances when he was gone, wondering why Ivan would curse out loud, and who exactly was the bitch he was referring to?

Whatever it was, it clearly meant something, and it doesn’t look good.

"We better follow him." Tobias suggested, and Duncan waved his hand, dismissing the head of Marius from his line of sight.

"While we do that, someone needs to air out this place." And he exited the room to breathe some fresh air, "go with Ivan and see what he’s up to, I need to dispose of the head since Marius’s soul no longer connects with it."

"I have to handle him alone then." Sighed Tobias before he followed Ivan’s trail.

Ivan, who was nearly running into the tent-covered cage where Draven was kept, halted when the guards he had kept to safeguard the entrance were not at their duty post, and when he rushed in, his suspicion was instantly confirmed, cause Draven was not there.

"Shit!"

"Ivan?" Tobias rushed into the tent as well, "why did you leave us hanging like that, what... what happened here?"

Tobias’s question instantly diverted to what he was seeing. The guards who were in charge of watching over Draven now lay sprawled on the floor, unmoving, and when he crouched to check for any pulse, there was no none. His eyes took in the tent’s neat condition, and there was no sight of Draven either.

"The fuck happened here?"

"We’ve been tricked." Ivan answered, feeling like a fool for not noticing that something like this was bound to happen. "Assemble the soldiers, including Herbert, we’re gonna turn this land upside down until we find that witch and her husband."

"I don’t understand."

"That wasn’t Draven." He turned to meet Tobias’s flabbergasted reaction, "that witch, she’s behind everything! If she’s escaped with Marius’s soul, I don’t think she must have gotten that far yet. Duncan’s cuffs must have worn her down at some point. Draven, Carmela, whichever one you come across on the way, find them, and do whatever it is you can to bring them back here."

Tobias nodded and simply went to do as ordered, leaving a distraught Ivan behind.

Ivan didn’t think that woman would have the guts to step into his den, and disguising herself as Draven proves that those two are really working together, just as he suspected. He was also sure Draven gave her the book, using it as her trick card to find her way into his den without having her presence suspected, cause they weren’t going to suspect her in the slightest, but Draven himself. freёnovelkiss.com

To merge a soul was similar to summoning one, and who else was capable of pulling such demonic stunts if it wasn’t Carmela? Draven has no such abilities, and that drew his suspicion to one witch.

Marius’s head was starting to rot, which could only mean he had found another vessel. He was transferring his soul into another body, but whose body could it be if...

And he paused, eyes snapping wide in pure alarm.

"Sam!" Ivan’s mind couldn’t have thought of anyone else, considering how obsessed Marius has always been with her. He didn’t even realize when he rushed back to his tent, and to his biggest relief, he saw Samantha speaking with Lucy outside their tent, looking visibly concerned about something.

"Sam."

Samantha’s gaze darted in Ivan’s direction to see him heading her way.

"Ivan? What are you–" she was taken aback when Ivan suddenly hugged her tightly in his hold, and she could feel his heart rate speed up abnormally, making her eyebrows thread in concern.

"Thank God you’re alright. Are you fine? Do you feel like yourself? Is there–"

"What is this about?" She blinked at him after pulling away, "I’m fine, but what is going on? Lucy just told me Draven had escaped from where he was isolated, and why did no one tell me he was here in the first place? Why did he come?"

"Are you sure you’re fine?"

"Yes," she assured him, "but I want to know what’s going on. You’re worked up yourself, and it can’t possibly be because of Draven. What is happening?"

"It’s complicated, but I need you to stay here and not go anywhere." He instructed and turned to Lucy, "stay with her till I return, and Duncan will be here if you two need anything."

"Ivan...?"

"Hey Ivan, you coming? We’re all set." Tobias showed up. "Cassian says he might have an idea where they went."

"I have to go now, I’ll be back. Wait here for me, okay? And don’t go anywhere." He reminded her before leaving.

"What exactly is going on?"

"From what I heard, Draven was not actually Draven but the witch, how fascinating." Duncan appeared from literally nowhere, joining the conversation.

"She has eloped with Marius’s soul." He added, making Samantha’s face pale drastically upon hearing that woman was here.

"Sounds awfully romantic, don’t you think?" He glanced in the direction where Ivan had taken, "he was worried Marius had taken over your soul again, but fortunately for us all, that isn’t the case."

"Marius escaped?" Lucy’s hands clasped her mouth in pure shock. "Great, so now even souls escape without their bodies."

"Where do you think they must have gone?"

"A tree." Alain’s cute voice joined in as Madeline returned from seeing her husband off. Their attention was diverted to Alain who blinked as if he just uttered something normal.

"What did you say?" Samantha asked Alain who repeated his word.

"The witch told me that she’d take me to a big tree if I don’t stay in the cage she locked me in." He added, leaning into his mother’s embrace as if those words were the only thing about Carmela that frightened him.

"He’s still bothered about what happened to him, so pay no heed to his words. He’s been saying the same thing to his father since he was brought back here, and I don’t know what that woman must have used to frighten him."

"It’ll be best if we stay together until they return." Lucy suggested. "And let’s hope they find them for real this time."
