Broken Bond: Claimed by My Ex-Husband's Alpha Billionaire Uncle-Chapter 40: Diana’s Job
Chapter 40: Diana’s Job
The reason Diana came to Crimson Moon Manor was because she kept hearing bad news about Julian.
She explained, "Honestly, I don’t give a fuck about all this family drama, but my coworkers won’t stop bugging me about it. So, I decided to take a few days off just to get away from their nonsense."
"A while ago, I heard he was involved in fraud, and now, suddenly, he’s an abusive husband?!" Diana scoffed, then turned to Charlotte. "And to someone as perfect as you?! How dare he lay a hand on you, sweetheart?"
Charlotte corrected her with a small smile. "I’m not his wife anymore."
It seemed Diana had truly never bothered to find out who Julian had married.
"Did Julian ever do anything bad to you?" Charlotte asked, curious about Diana’s clear hatred toward her nephew.
"Nah, he’s scared of me," Diana said, rolling her eyes. "But I always knew that kid would grow up to be a menace to society. His mother spoiled him rotten and justified everything he did since he was little, so it was obvious he wasn’t going to turn out to be a decent man."
With that, Diana casually strolled into the house, flopped onto the sofa, propped her feet up on the coffee table, and grabbed a snack without a care in the world.
Was that even appropriate behavior? Well, this was technically her house, so she could do whatever she wanted.
"Auntie, let’s watch the movie together!" Haven beamed, jumping onto Diana’s lap before patting the empty seat beside her. "Auntie Charlotte, what are you doing over there? Come sit with us!"
Charlotte was taken aback, thinking Haven had completely forgotten about her.
Feeling a bit awkward, she sat down beside Diana. But to her surprise, Diana casually offered her a snack. "Want a bite?"
Charlotte smiled politely. "No, thank you."
Maybe she was the only one who found the situation awkward.
Haven snuggled closer to Diana, resting her head against her aunt’s shoulder. "Auntie, can you stay for a few days?"
Diana glanced down at her niece, then ruffled her hair. "Yeah, I took a few days off, so I guess I’ll crash here for a bit."
Charlotte silently observed their interaction. Despite her rough and rebellious exterior, Diana seemed to have a soft spot for Haven.
As the movie played, the atmosphere gradually became more relaxed. Diana made sarcastic remarks about the film, which made Haven giggle, while Charlotte occasionally chuckled at their banter.
For the first time, someone didn’t freak out upon learning that Damon had claimed his nephew’s ex-wife.
Maybe it was because Diana simply didn’t care about other people’s business, or perhaps she just wasn’t the type to make a fuss over things that didn’t concern her.
Either way, Charlotte felt at ease with her. Who would’ve thought that an eccentric goth could make her feel this comfortable?
But that comfortable night didn’t last long once Louis and Vera finally emerged from their room.
They smelled like shampoo and soap, a clear sign that they had just taken a shower.
"Diana?" Louis suddenly tapped her shoulder, his eyes widening in surprise. "What are you doing here?!"
Diana lazily glanced up at Louis, completely unfazed. She popped another piece of snack into her mouth before answering, "What? Can’t I visit my own damn house?"
Louis narrowed his eyes. "You never visit unless you’re running away from something."
Diana smirked. "Busted. My coworkers won’t shut up about Julian’s mess, so I took a little break." She stretched her legs out on the couch, looking completely at ease. "Figured I’d come here to escape the bullshit."
Vera, who had been standing beside Louis, folded her arms. "And here I thought you finally missed your family."
Diana snorted. "I missed Haven. The rest of you? Meh." She ruffled Haven’s hair playfully, making the little girl giggle.
Louis sighed, rubbing his temples. "Well, since you’re here, at least try not to make a mess." Then his eyes flickered to Charlotte. "You okay?"
Charlotte, who had been quietly observing their exchange, blinked at him. "Uh, yeah. Why wouldn’t I be?"
Louis hesitated before sighing. "No reason. Just ... Diana can be a handful."
Diana scoffed. "Excuse me? I’m an absolute delight." She then added, "Where have you two been? I’ve been here for an hour! I bet your bed has—"
Vera quickly covered Diana’s mouth. "What bed?! We were just discussing important matters like financial planning and other things!" ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
Diana smirked behind Vera’s hand, clearly amused. She playfully pulled her hand away and leaned back against the sofa. "Sure, sure. Financial planning that requires locking the door for hours. Sounds legit."
They kept bantering for a while until Charlotte heard a car pull up in front of the door.
Mona and Carmen had told her they would be staying at a hotel tonight since the opera was in another city, so the only person it could be was Damon.
Damon entered the house with a tense expression, as if he were holding back his anger. He didn’t say a word to Charlotte. Instead, he glanced at Diana for a second before saying, "Come with me."
He didn’t even ask why his sister had suddenly come home.
Did that mean Damon already knew Diana was coming?
Diana arched a brow, clearly unimpressed by his commanding tone. "Oh? No ’hello’? No ’long time no see, dear sister’?" She smiled, leaning back against the couch. "Tsk, Damon, your manners are getting worse."
Damon didn’t react. He just stood there, waiting.
Diana sighed dramatically, then nudged Haven off her lap before standing up. "Alright, alright. Let’s go, Alpha Big Boss."
What was going on?
Were they going to fight?
Before Charlotte could voice her thoughts, Damon had already turned toward the hallway, Diana following closely behind.
Sensing her confusion, Louis spoke up. "Diana isn’t the type to come home without a reason. If Damon didn’t call her here, then she’s probably bringing bad news."
"Bad news?" Charlotte tilted her head.
Louis sighed and sank onto the couch, then gestured for Vera to take the sleepy Haven to bed. Once they were alone, he continued, "Yeah. Diana is the Nocturnal Order’s best hunter."
"Her job is to keep our territory safe by hunting down rogue werewolves or any other dangerous beings." He leaned back. "That’s why she’s always moving around and rarely comes home."
"I guess this time she’s bringing bad news too," Louis speculated. "Maybe there are rogue werewolves lurking around here."
Charlotte swallowed hard. She had never encountered rogue werewolves in person since they usually roamed in dark, desolate places.
Besides, she hadn’t left the house in five years, soshe had no idea what the outside world was like anymore.
Charlotte shifted uncomfortably in her seat. The thought of rogue werewolves being nearby sent a shiver down her spine.
"Should we be worried?" she asked, glancing at Louis.
Louis exhaled, leaning back against the couch. "Not yet. If Diana’s here, it means the situation is still under control ... for now."
That wasn’t exactly reassuring. Charlotte pursed her lips, debating whether she should bring a gun in her purse every day or not.
"Well, that’s not my fault!" Diana suddenly shouted as she marched toward the front door.
Charlotte flinched at the sudden outburst. She turned her head toward the hallway, where Damon emerged with a deep scowl on his face.
"You should’ve handled it sooner," Damon said, his voice dangerously calm.
Diana scoffed, "Oh, please. I just found out about it! What did you expect me to do? Time travel and stop it before it happened?"
Louis, who had been lounging on the couch finally asked, "So... what’s the bad news?"
Damon let out a tired sigh before speaking. "There’s been a string of rogue attacks near our borders." His gray eyes darkened as he continued, "And they’re not just aimless wanderers anymore. They’re organized."
Charlotte tilted her head in confusion. "What does that mean?"
Diana crossed her arms. "It means someone’s leading them."
"And for some reason, this lady over here accidentally killed the only person who could have led us to the culprit," Damon said in a sarcastic tone.
Diana scoffed, crossing her arms. "Oh, please. That bastard was going to die anyway. I just sped up the process."
Damon ran a hand down his face, clearly frustrated. "That bastard was our only lead, Diana. Now we’re back to square one."
Charlotte, who had been quietly watching their exchange, hesitated before speaking. "What exactly is going on? What culprit?"
Damon turned to her, his eyes softening for a brief moment before hardening again. "There have been rogue werewolves causing trouble near our borders. They’ve been attacking humans and even a few of our people. We captured one, hoping to get information, but ..." He shot Diana a pointed look.
"He pissed me off," Diana admitted unapologetically. "And I may have ... ripped out his throat."
Charlotte blinked. "You may have?"
Diana shrugged.
Damon let out a slow breath, clearly holding back a string of curses. "Now, thanks to her, we have no idea where the rest of them are hiding or who’s leading them."
Louis, who had been listening, sighed. "So, what’s the plan now?"
Damon straightened, his expression unreadable. "Now? We wait. Sooner or later, they’ll make another move."
Charlotte felt a chill run down her spine. Now, how could she go out at night with peace of mind?
