Chapter 223: Something is coming

Vale returned his unseen law and flew toward where the army would be. He began to think about how he would address it. For all he knew, the army might be firmly back in Thrain’s hands, and this was simply a trap waiting to be sprung.

But he couldn’t resist. It was the only way to try and match Thrain in a fight—unless they were going to fight one-on-one, which he doubted.

...The army it is then... I’m sure by now Thrain will be looking for a way to appoint a new Commander for them...

He flew on, going higher and higher between the clouds. And then he saw it—the army camp. They had spread their tents by the thousands. Commander Wrt must have moved more troops than Vale had thought he would.

...What the... There must be up to two thousand here!...

Vale couldn’t believe his eyes. This was the first time he had seen something this big. Tents spread below him in the same shade of grey, broken here and there by the purple flag of the Clan.

It made the hair on his body rise.

He felt the formation that covered the entire camp. It was engraved into the tents and arranged in such a way that it was drawing a massive amount of essence from the air to sustain itself. Not only that, he could see another shield overlapping the one from the formation. That one would likely be from an artifact.

...I can’t break this like I did the smaller ones... This is like trying to fight the sea... And they’ll likely redirect it into an offensive as soon as I make a move... This won’t be as simple as I wanted...

It was a good thing he was using his law and had moved to a greater height. Because then he saw towers and flying ships above the camp, ready for battle at any time.

It was then that Vale truly understood the might of the Athrimir Clan—and this was just part of it. No wonder the other Clans in the Hinterlands had to come together in the past to form an opposition to them.

...If Father had made the Clans weaker, then I’d like to see us when we are at our peak...

And at the center of it all was the Commander’s tent. It was made of dark steel, formed into the shape of a tent, and engraved with enchanted words.

Vale wondered if it could fly as well. It might, giving orders from above. The sight confirmed to Vale that Wrt had truly moved the bulk of his army here.

...That tent is my target... It will have the most senior members of the army and whoever is in control now...

With that, Vale swung around and returned to the front, still hovering in the sky. He considered his options—to fight or not to fight. He easily dismissed fighting because he now understood that he had underestimated the army when he thought he could just face them alongside the Master Knights.

He hadn’t thought of them as one but as individuals. But now that he saw the scale of the defensive formation, he could only imagine what their offensive power would be.

When he reached a safe distance, he didn’t bring his tower down. He still hovered there.

"Can I somehow fool them if I wear one of the armors I took from those bandits?"

...What if they ask for a badge? Or if they ask me questions I have no answers for?... Ah... No need to do all that. I’ll just brute-force my way in... It shouldn’t be hard...

Inside the tower, he smiled. "It shouldn’t be hard. I just have to make sure I don’t die. Let’s see... Formations usually protect against teleportation, but if I can make a small hole in it, then I should be able to teleport inside."

He went back to the center of the camp, directly above the Commander’s tent. Then, just to be sure, he dropped the unseen law and made a new one.

"This tower is now unseen and unsensed!"

Without waiting, he dropped down toward the camp. The tower blurred. The ships neither saw nor sensed him, and he rammed into the shield with ground-shaking force.

A loud crack echoed, and the shield twisted, rippling with silver light, but it didn’t break. He made no hole in it.

Vale cursed as ships turned toward him and alarms blared in the camp.

...They’ll be trying to reinforce the shield while the ships fight me...!

He dropped the law he was using. The disturbance made it hard for him to remain unseen.

With a whoosh, his presence spread, and he made another law.

"Everything around me is now at its weakest!"

The law spread in a rippling shockwave. The two ships closest to him tilted as their power faltered, beginning to descend while the crew atop them scrambled to figure out what had suddenly gone wrong.

As for Vale, the tower shot down again like an arrow and rammed the shield once more. This time, he managed to make a small crack in it.

At the same time, he disappeared.

Vale appeared inside the camp, above the Commander’s tent. He didn’t make any moves to get out of there. Instead, he turned his essence pressure down and slammed it into the tent.

The Knights around were thrown away as a rippling shockwave pushed them back. The metal tent shuddered, and the enchanted words on it flared to life.

From within, Knights poured out—four of them, all Errant Knights. Powerful ones.

They turned their eyes to the tower in surprise. Black, with red light running through it.

For a moment, nobody said anything. The Knights were simply too shocked to realize that someone had managed to break into the camp without them sensing it. Vale was still a bit surprised that he was inside.

It was the formation that moved first.

The formation flared, and the energy above Vale tightened.

...Something is coming!...

Chains of silver light dropped down and wrapped around the tower. Even though they were weaker than they should have been, they were still strong. Vale knew he couldn’t teleport.

But he wasn’t about to. His voice boomed.

"Hello to you too! Your new Commander is here!"
