Chapter 806: Chapter 557: Extra—The Romance of Love (Part 3)

"First, have some water!" Bai Ye handed over a bottle of mineral water and said, "Take your time, no rush."

"...Thanks, Officer Bai!" Mo Feng replied politely.

"Later, when I saw no one answered the door, I stood at the entrance and thought for a while," Mo Feng recalled. "Perhaps due to the constant travel these days and being busy all day yesterday, Xu seemed too tired to wake up. So I returned to my room, thinking of trying again after a while."

"Does your boss, Xu, usually arrive late due to fatigue, say, the next day?" Bai Ye asked thoughtfully.

Mo Feng thought for a moment and replied, "As I recall, since being transferred to the Director’s Office and assigned as Xu’s assistant, for over two years, she never seemed to be late. So, it’s odd that she didn’t get up as usual this morning."

"Alright, I see," Bai Ye said. "Go on. How did you discover Ms. Xu?"

"Xiao Ma! Come over here." Bai Ye called over the officer and whispered some instructions to him: "Go and inquire with the hotel security and adjacent shops. Confirm if there’s a breakfast stand near the hotel entrance. Report back afterward."

"Got it, I’ll go right away." Officer Xiao Ma turned to leave immediately.

"Hold on. Also, notify our colleagues to keep this incident confidential for now. And call Professor Gan Zi. Remember, don’t mention Xu Ruowei was killed; just say there’s an urgent matter in town that needs his help and ask him to return at once." Bai Ye specifically instructed Xiao Ma.

"Understood." Xiao Ma nodded.

"About two hours passed, and I nearly finished reviewing today’s work content," Mo Feng noticed Officer Xiao Ma leaving. Then he continued, "I went to knock on Xu’s room again, but still got no response, so I returned to my room."

Mo Feng recalled, "As soon as I got back to my room, there was a knock on the door, and when I opened it, it was the project manager, Shen Feng. The situation was like this."

Shen Feng asked, "Mo Feng, morning! Isn’t it time we head out for work?"

Mo Feng replied, "Xu isn’t up yet! Let’s wait a bit!"

"Oh... Still not up this late? Maybe too tired." Shen Feng’s surprised voice barely concealed a sense of satisfaction, his expression was somewhat telling despite his attempts to hide it. "I’ll go back to my room and hold them off for now."

After recalling the situation, Mo Feng said, "But, Officer Bai, I felt Shen Feng’s expression was quite odd when he replied to me."

"Oh... How so?" Bai Ye took notes. "Try to recall in detail... everything he said and did, his expressions, tell us everything you remember as clearly as possible."

"When Shen Feng said, ’Maybe too tired,’ I noticed his eyes and tone seemed to imply he knew exactly why Xu slept in," Mo Feng pondered. "Later, I didn’t think much of it and partially closed the door, continuing to sit at my desk planning the schedule for later."

Although Bai Ye never had a romantic relationship, he sensed there might be a liaison, "Is there something between your boss Xu and Manager Shen?"

Mo Feng had only heard rumors and wasn’t actually sure, "I really don’t know... I’m genuinely clueless..."

Because of her discretion and loyalty, Xu Ruowei favored her.

Bai Ye scrutinized her closely; her eyes behind the glasses were red. She didn’t seem to be lying. So Bai Ye continued, "Please go on!"

"After another hour or so, Shen Feng and the others came by, asking if Xu had woken up. Shen suggested he take them to Wenchang Village for work, telling me to inform Xu later. Then they left for work," Mo Feng removed her glasses and rubbed her aching head. "It was close to noon, still no answer from Xu, no call to meet her. I was very puzzled, assuming perhaps Xu was up doing something else privately and didn’t want to be disturbed. That was my only thought."

Bai Ye grasped a critical point, "Ms. Mo, since your boss Xu didn’t wake up so late, as her assistant, why didn’t you enter her room to find her?"

"Xu ordered that she didn’t like others entering her room!" Mo Feng hesitated.

Bai Ye said nothing, but his gaze grew intense, applying invisible pressure on Mo Feng.

Unable to withstand the pressure, Mo Feng confessed, "Although I’m Xu’s assistant, she’s not fond of me entering her room. Without her orders, I wouldn’t dare. The job pays well, I can’t defy her..."

It’s clear Mo Feng is still somewhat afraid of Xu Ruowei.

It’s likely Xu Ruowei wanted to protect her privacy by forbidding Mo Feng from entering her room despite their closeness.

Instead, Mo Feng’s closeness to Xu Ruowei made her more adamant about keeping her out.

At this point, Officer Xiao Ma entered the security office, whispered to Bai Ye, "Investigation checked out. Security and nearby residents confirmed there was indeed a breakfast stand by the hotel a couple of days ago, run by a man selling soy milk and fried dough, a converted tricycle stand, movable, it’s not there now. Locals say it was someone from the lower village; no one knows him, but his breakfast was quite good."

Xiao Ma said, "Also, I already called Professor Gan; by now, he’s likely in City A. No one answered his phone."

"Alright, I understand," Bai Ye nodded. "I’ll call Professor Gan myself soon!"

"Miss Mo, please wait a moment. I’ll step out briefly and return shortly," Bai Ye said. "Think carefully, and we’ll continue when I return."

Mo Feng nodded, taking a sip of water.

Bai Ye left the security office, paced slowly at the hotel entrance, lifting his head at times as if searching for something.

Then, his phone rang.

It was a call from Gan Zi.

"Professor Gan, sorry to bother you at this time..." Bai Ye said.

Gan Zi was straightforward, "Another incident in town?"

Gan Zi’s words made Bai Ye a bit embarrassed, "Professor Gan... Xu Ruowei is dead..."

There was silence on the other end. Bai Ye couldn’t see his expression, but such news is surely hard for anyone to accept!

Bai Ye, hearing no response, added, "Professor Gan, I’m truly sorry. A server saw you met her before her death last night. I’d like to ask..."

Gan Zi lit a cigarette; he had just returned to City A, done some syllabus work in the morning, and was to have a class in the afternoon. After hearing of Xu Ruowei’s death, he lost interest in teaching.

"Go ahead," Gan Zi exhaled deeply.

Bai Ye quickly asked, "Last night, when you saw her, did she say anything particular, or was there anything notable?"

Gan Zi took another deep drag, "She said she didn’t want me to leave! I refused, saying I’d return to City A anyway." 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

"When did you last see her?" Bai Ye knew this woman was quite flamboyant, but the dead were no longer a concern; the investigation had to press on.

Gan Zi replied, "My train was at eleven at night. I left the town at seven, and she saw me off..."
