Chapter 614: Prepare Yourself

Along the way, Li Zhi did not speak a word, providing He Juan with an opportunity to observe his surroundings.

All eyes fell on them, especially him, brimming with unbridled curiosity and intrigue. He Juan tried to not let it get to him, but for someone who had lived the better part of his life hidden in the shadows, it felt no different than being trapped in a zoo, paraded around for everyone to see.

Fortunately, they soon stepped into the elevator, cutting off those intrusive gazes from sight.

He Juan watched as Li Zhi pressed the button for the fifth floor before he spoke, "I hope you haven’t forgotten your status as a wanted criminal, Mr. He. Just because you have garnered quite a lot of support from the public doesn’t mean your past deeds will be forgotten. You could have kept hiding like you have done all these years, but now that you have chosen to show yourself, you’d better be prepared."

He Juan almost couldn’t suppress a chuckle when he heard that. He had actually been quite worried when he heard that Mu Yuze had joined the police force – and the Violent Crime Unit at that! – but now that he had met Li Zhi in person, it seemed like his concern was superfluous.

He truly appreciated someone like Li Zhi. Someone who wouldn’t hesitate to speak his mind, unwavering in his mission to seek the truth, and unaffected by public opinion. He Juan had seen far too many officers who cowered in the face of pressure and ended up going along with the flow, but fortunately, Li Zhi was not someone like that.

He Juan mentally crossed Li Zhi off the list in his mind. The man was the type of person who would openly show his dislike, the professional ethics notwithstanding. He couldn’t have been the rat in cahoots with the Manipulator.

On the contrary, he strangely reminded He Juan of the former Captain...

Thinking of that person whose face had become a blur in his mind, the traces of smile vanished from He Juan’s face and his expression turned grim.

The elevator let out a soft ding and slid open, revealing a bustling hallway. Li Zhi stepped out first and barked at them, "What are you all doing here? Are you queuing for the fucking bathroom?! Get back to work! Go go go!"

They all scurried away like headless flies, not before casting a few intrigued glances at He Juan.

He Juan, on the other hand, was busy looking around for a certain Omega. Hmm, he did not see Mu Yuze around. Was it because of their relationship that Mu Yuze was exempted from the investigation team? Keeping that question in mind, He Juan followed after the Captain and was led into a familiar interrogation room.

"Wait a minute," was all the man said before leaving He Juan in the room, instructing the guards outside to keep a close watch on him.

Removing his suit jacket, He Juan pulled out a chair and settled into it. His reflection stared back at him from the mirror in front, but he knew very well that it was a one-way mirror and a group of officers were most likely scrutinizing him at the moment.

Could his Xiao Ze be among them?

Once He Juan caught up with his thoughts, he felt a wave of helplessness crashing over him.

What should he do? It seemed like in everything he did, Mu Yuze would always slip into his mind one way or another...

No, he couldn’t keep this up. Today, he was here for business. He had to focus on the matter at hand!

Inside the interrogation room, the air somehow felt colder than outside, and the only sounds came from the hum of the air conditioner and the ticking clock. Perhaps it was the narrow space, the room seemed to give off a desolate and eerie aura.

He Juan tapped his fingers on the table as he waited. He was extremely familiar with the procedure; they probably left him hanging to increase the tension for a smoother interrogation later. But how was He Juan supposed to tell them in a polite and cordial way that the tactics wouldn’t work on him? He’d rather they instantly get straight to business...

Heaving an exasperated sigh, He Juan redirected his gaze to the mirror before him.

"Ah!" An officer on the other side cried out in shock, clutching his chest. "H–He is looking right at me!"

His exclamation was met with a chorus of ’boo’s. "Do you think he has laser eyes or something? There’s no way he could see through the mirror, dumbass!"

"Though I have to admit, this pressure is no joke..."

"Yeah, is it because we know his identity, or is it just the superior Alpha thingy? I suddenly feel like a student about to face his homeroom teacher..."

"Oh, and don’t forget, he has regained his memories now!"

"Why did he have to come in a three-piece suit? Does he think this is a shareholder meeting?!"

Kang Guanyu clicked his tongue, shaking his head. "Geez, I’ve sensed something different about him since Miss Zhao Xinya’s case, but who could have foreseen that he would be XIU all along?"

Another officer echoed his sentiments, "Come to think of it, you’re right. Even back then, he looked fearless despite being a prime suspect! Damn it, we should have apprehended him back then!"

Kang Guanyu shot him a stinky glare, "Do you think we can apprehend him now?" He let out a scoff. "Let’s not mention any solid evidence, we haven’t even reopened the case yet!"

"Y–You’re right..."

"I think that’s enough," Director Zhang spoke up from where he was sitting on the side, his gaze fixated on the long-haired man beyond the mirror. "Captain Li, start questioning him now."

"Yes, Sir." Li Zhi stood up, carrying his notebook and laptop with him. Before leaving the room, he approached Mu Yuze, who had been making his presence minimum, stating, "I don’t know about you, but XIU is my enemy. That will not change no matter what. So if you want to remain in the team, Officer Mu, I suggest you not let your past relationship with him get the best out of you." It was as much as advice as it was a warning. He wanted Mu Yuze not to forget that the only reason he could remain on the team despite his personal relationship with the man, was only because of his vow that he would capture He Juan with his own hands.

The hushed chatter in the monitor room died down in an instant as all eyes converged on the two of them.

After a brief moment of silence, Mu Yuze straightened up and responded firmly, "Noted, Captain."
