Chapter 617: Until Next Time

"You—" Li Zhi’s forehead throbbed in anger.

"What’s wrong, Captain Li?" He Juan arched a perfect brow and questioned in a seemingly innocent tone. "Surely that can’t be too difficult for you, can it? Or are you implying that your officer is unable to maintain a professional attitude when facing—"

"Fine!" Li Zhi cut him off with a growl. "Fuck, we agree to your condition! If you can’t fulfill your part of the deal, you’re dead meat!" he glared daggers at He Juan before tapping on his earpiece. "You heard him. Get Officer Mu here— what?!" He must have heard something shocking from the other side because his eyes went as wide as saucers. Then he redirected his glare to He Juan, this time more intense as though He Juan had murdered his entire family and wore their heads around his waist like a belt.

"You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?" he hissed sharply.

He Juan’s brows almost shot up to his hairline when he heard that. What was it this time? He did not do anything, though?

He got his answer the next second when Li Zhi gritted out as if his skin was flayed with each word he said. "Prime Minister Liang is asking for you. Talk about timing. Don’t tell me that you two haven’t discussed this beforehand, because I won’t believe in that bullshit!"

Now, He Juan truly felt wronged. He had never asked Prime Minister Liang to whisk him away from this place— hell, he didn’t even have any intention of informing her about his plans in the first place! He speculated that one of his men must have been worried sick that he wouldn’t walk out of this place alive, thus was forced to enlist her help. Still, He Juan couldn’t rule out the possibility that this was not the case. What if the woman truly needed something from him? It would be better for him to go and check out the situation.

As for this misunderstanding with Li Zhi... sigh, forget it. It was not like anything he said could make the captain change his opinion.

He Juan rose from his seat and grabbed his jacket, "I suppose that will be all for today."

"Yeah," Li Zhi stood up as well and offered him a sharp, menacing grin. "Next time, we will send an arrest warrant to your doorstep." 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

The two of them – reluctantly – shook hands before Li Zhi sent He Juan off to the elevator. "I think here is enough, Captain Li. I can find the way out myself." He Juan said with a tight-lipped smile. "Until next time."

Once the elevator doors closed, He Juan immediately dropped his smile and subtly rolled his shoulder, mindful of the CCTV on the ceiling. "Goodness, I am getting too old for this..." he released an exhausted sigh. It was really tiring to keep up this façade. And to make matters worse, he couldn’t even catch sight of Mu Yuze!

Where had the omega disappeared to? Did his team forbid him from showing up today? If He Juan had not presented that condition, would Mu Yuze have remained absent throughout the entire investigation?!

He Juan secretly patted his back for his quick wit. Despite it being an impromptu idea, it all worked out in his favor. If he really had to divulge his past, then he would prefer telling it to his mate directly.

That’s right, regardless of Mu Yuze’s reaction when the time comes...

Slipping his hand into his pocket, He Juan grabbed his phone. Should he give Mu Yuze a call?

The last time they had heard each other’s voices was the night prior. Even then, He Juan couldn’t stay for long because he had a lot of things to take care of. Understanding how busy he was, Mu Yuze acted sensible and suggested they meet up once He Juan arrived in Yuyang. For that reason, He Juan had been so eager to see the omega when he reached the Bureau, but alas.

Before he could make up his mind, however, the elevator dinged open on the third floor. He Juan stepped back to make room for entering passengers, but when the doors slid open, he was given the shock of his life when he suddenly found himself face-to-face with the person he had been yearning for.

"Xiao—"

Mu Yuze placed his finger on his lips, gesturing for him to stay silent. The front part of the omega’s hair was wet as if he had just washed his face. He had his poker face on, rendering He Juan unable to guess what he was thinking about. What was he doing on this floor?

Without a word, Mu Yuze grabbed his wrist and pulled him out of the elevator. With him acting all mysterious like this, what other choice did He Juan have but to comply? He obediently allowed himself to be led along, though he had not stopped wondering what the omega was planning to do.

They stopped in front of a door, and He Juan only had time to glimpse the sign ’Archive 2’ above it before Mu Yuze ushered him inside.

"The CCTV in this room malfunctioned yesterday and it hasn’t been fixed yet. No one will come here, so you can be rest assured," Mu Yuze spoke in a low voice.

He Juan did not even have the luxury to survey the surroundings, for all of his attention was focused on the omega before him.

Sure enough, something was amiss with Mu Yuze. What could be the cause? The only possibility He Juan could think of was the interrogation session earlier. He sucked in cold air, his heart sinking a little. Oh no, was it because of his confession that he had killed those officers seven years ago? Had it made Mu Yuze feel so repulsed and—

The train of He Juan’s thoughts was promptly broken when Mu Yuze whirled around and pounced on him, arms encircling around his torso. And He Juan, who was wholly unprepared for this, staggered backward from the full brunt of the omega’s weight, his back colliding with the door behind him.

He was completely taken aback by the sudden hug. "X–Xiao Ze?" his hands hovered around the omega, unsure where to touch. "What is it? Are you feeling unwell?"

But once again, Mu Yuze took him by utter surprise when he lifted his head, sealing He Juan’s lips with his.
