Chapter 618: What Are We?

"Mmph...?!" Xiao Ze?!

He Juan’s eyes widened in astonishment at the unexpected turn of events. He stared at Mu Yuze’s tightly shut eyes and scrunched up brows, still too stunned to react.

The sudden kiss was nothing but sloppy, rough and frantic, filled with an inexplicable desperation that left He Juan puzzled. The omega’s fists were bunched up on his suit jacket, his knuckles white and trembling.

As though dissatisfied with He Juan’s lack of response, Mu Yuze pressed closer and bit down on He Juan’s lower lip in gentle admonishment, a small whimper escaping his own. At this point, he was practically leaning his whole weight on He Juan as though despising any infinitesimal distance between them. Were it not for the door behind him offering support, He Juan was certain Mu Yuze would have tackled him down to the ground.

He Juan did not have the slightest idea what had triggered Mu Yuze to do this. He only knew one thing— his mate was in distress. And it was enough to spur him to move.

Seizing Mu Yuze’s clenched fist with his larger one, he used his free hand to cradle the omega’s jaw, fingers caressing the soft and fair skin. Slowly, without giving Mu Yuze the idea that he was trying to dominate, he took charge of the kiss and coaxed those sweet alluring lips to move with him in a lazy, unhurried dance. He was using this kiss to convey the unspoken reassurances.

I’m here. Everything is okay, Xiao Ze. I will be here for you.

Mu Yuze released a small, breathy keen from his throat, and He Juan failed to realize how tense his little bunny had been until he relaxed and melted into He Juan’s arms. Yes, that’s right... just like this...

He Juan’s hands did not stay idle in the meantime. The one on Mu Yuze’s face traveled to the back of his neck, delicately stroking his gland in an attempt to soothe him. He despised the patch that prevented him from making direct contact with the omega’s skin, but he was aware that they were still in the Bureau right now. He would kill whoever caught a whiff of his omega’s intoxicating pheromones.

Hence, He Juan forced himself to withdraw, their lips parting with a quiet smooching sound, warm breath entwining.

He smiled at Mu Yuze’s glossy and watery eyes. "What is it? Hmm?" he inquired softly. Mu Yuze was not the type of person who would mix business and pleasure, so he must be in extreme turmoil to drag He Juan here.

Not wanting to draw any unwarranted attention, He Juan could only scent Mu Yuze lightly, leaving behind just enough pheromones to linger on the omega’s lithe body. Mu Yuze sighed in contentment and buried his face into He Juan’s shoulder, his voice muffled, "Nothing..."

He Juan responded with a pensive hum. "But it doesn’t seem like nothing, though?"

"It’s... it’s a silly reason..." Mu Yuze’s earlobes flushed in a deeper shade of crimson, amusing He Juan to no end.

Still with his back leaning against the door, he planted a gentle kiss on Mu Yuze’s temple. His deep and gentle voice echoed right beside Mu Yuze’s ear, seemingly as if it had rumbled off his chest. "It’s fine. No matter how silly, I still want to hear it. I couldn’t possibly ignore whatever is troubling my mate, right?"

Mu Yuze’s breath stuttered. No matter how many times it had been, he couldn’t seem to get used to He Juan truly acknowledging him as a mate. It was all so unbelievable to him, like having his wildest dream coming true right in front of his eyes. Tightening his grip around He Juan, he opened his mouth to speak, only to falter in the end.

He was not lying when he said that it was a silly reason.

Just that... when Li Zhi began asking He Juan about that accident seven years ago, Mu Yuze keenly noticed that the man’s complexion did not seem right. Even though his expression technically had not changed, Mu Yuze could somehow sense that he was enduring an unspeakable pain. And when He Juan finally admitted to his crime, when Captain Li grabbed him by the collar... the look in his eyes was not something Mu Yuze could forget – perhaps for a lifetime. He had never seen such a look on Juan-gege’s face before. It was a gaze so desolate and vacant as though all the brilliance had been drained from his gorgeous silver eyes.

At that moment, it was like he had lost his soul for a split second, making him look like a walking corpse...

Mu Yuze was aghast once that thought crossed his mind. How such an absurd notion could invade his mind was out of his comprehension. It could very well be a figment of his imagination, or his eyes playing a trick on him, yet Mu Yuze couldn’t shake off the indescribable chill seeping into his heart. It felt as if he had a taste of that abyss again – the moment when he believed he had lost He Juan forever.

Before he knew it, he was already striding toward the door. The visceral urge to see He Juan up close, to touch him, to confirm that he was still alive and breathing consumed him akin to a fiery blaze that charred his sanity.

It was fortunate that Kang Guanyu called out to him in time, snapping him out of his reverie. "Mu Yuze, where are you going?!"

Mu Yuze halted on his tracks in front of the door, his fists clenched tight. No, he must not make a scene here – in front of his colleagues and Director Zhang especially. Once they found out that he had once again lost control of himself because of He Juan, he would directly be excluded from the investigation team.

Summoning every ounce of self-restraint within him, he stomped down on the impulsivity and replied, "Bathroom. I will be back."

He tried splashing his face with cold water to calm the restlessness in his blood, yet it was to no avail. The urge continued to boil and simmer within him, until it all exploded when he caught He Juan and dragged him to this room.

Even now when Mu Yuze was holding him tight, when his ear was pressed right against He Juan’s resounding heartbeat, the fear still lingered within him – fear that He Juan would leave him again for someplace he couldn’t reach.

Not enough... just one kiss was not enough...

What should he do? Was there anything he could do to bind He Juan to him? To ensure that his Gege never left ever again?

Yes, a small voice within him whispered, there is a way. One perfect way that only you can do.

"Xiao Ze?" He Juan’s concerned voice sounded above him, interrupting his thoughts. "What is it? You know that you can tell me everything, right?"

Mu Yuze’s breath hitched in his throat. He failed to register He Juan’s words, for all of a sudden he became so painfully aware of how their bodies were pressed against each other. That’s right, there was one way – a method only he could execute as He Juan’s mate. Why hadn’t he thought of it sooner? Biting down on his bottom lip, determination filled his gaze as his hand traced southward.

"X–Xiao Ze?!" Shock was an utter understatement to describe He Juan’s current feeling when he sensed Mu Yuze’s hand skittering below his abdomen, so dangerously close to...

"Gege..." Mu Yuze raised his head, showing a pitiful and miserable look. "What are we?"

A surefire method to bind He Juan to him— make the Alpha mark him for life.
