Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 643: In The Shadows
In contrast to the almost peaceful back-and-forth in the interrogation room, the monitor room was filled with hushed chatter.
"Can we trust his words?"
"Well, he doesn’t have a reason to lie, does he?"
"I don’t think so. Who’s to say that yesterday’s meeting isn’t a set-up? He could have colluded with the Manipulator to fool all of us. Captain, I don’t think we should take his words at face value."
"I agree," Li Zhi nodded solemnly. "There’s no harm in exercising more caution. Right now, we still can’t ascertain whether XIU is truly by our side. Tell Officer Mu to make it vague."
At his command, the technician relayed the message to Mu Yuze’s earpiece, and on the other side of the mirror, Mu Yuze replied to He Juan’s question, "Not much, to be honest. But that’s the exact reason you’re here, no?"
He Juan’s gaze brushed fleetingly across the earpiece in Mu Yuze’s ear, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Alright, what do you want to know about him?"
"Everything," Mu Yuze said. "Where he comes from, his real name, age, the sorts of crime he has done, and... his real appearance."
"Let’s see..." He Juan pondered for a while, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Actually, there isn’t much I can tell you about him. Instead of me, it’s better to ask the one whom you guys are monitoring right now. After all, he’s the one who found and brought the Manipulator into Xuanlong. His name is Ku Jin, though I have no idea whether it’s truly his real name or not. I don’t know where he comes from. If we’re talking about the things he has done, I can go on for three whole days without stopping, but do you really want to hear that? As for his real appearance..." He Juan shook his head. "As far as I know, the Manipulator has never taken his mask off in front of others. No one, perhaps not even his Boss, has ever seen what he really looks like."
Maybe except for one, He Juan thought. If there was one person in this world who had seen Ku Jin’s real face, it could only be Jia Molei. But He Juan couldn’t possibly bring up Jia Molei’s name and implicate the doctor more than he already did, so he sensibly kept mum.
Meanwhile, everyone in the monitor room almost went ballistic at the new information. "Ku Jin! That’s his name!"
"Fuck, we can finally put a name on him instead of calling him the impostor or manipulator!"
Li Zhi immediately commanded the technicians to conduct a comprehensive background check. "Search our citizen database and do not leave a single person out. Include those who have been declared dead as well!"
"Yes, Sir!"
"Will you do a background check on him?" He Juan asked. "I doubt that you would find anything, but well... there’s nothing wrong with trying."
Mu Yuze furrowed his brows. "Do you mean to say that nothing would come up in our investigation? Why?"
"The same reason why you couldn’t find any records about ’He Juan’ except for the past seven years," He Juan replied casually, catching Mu Yuze off guard. "People like us, Officer Mu, we live in the shadows— thus it would be better if the world treats us as if we don’t exist in the first place."
Mu Yuze clenched his fists, trying to suppress the discomfort on his chest. He had to tell himself again and again that the one before him right now was not his Juan-gege, but XIU – the man who had once shaken the whole country with his nickname alone. He was aware that despite how perfect He Juan looked on the surface, he was harboring a great darkness inside him— a darkness that caused him to be feared and revered in equal measure.
Mu Yuze had prepared himself for this when he embarked on this path, and he certainly wouldn’t stop now. His hunch was telling him that what he knew about He Juan so far was just the tip of the iceberg, that the darkness might very well engulf him from head to toe, but... he was not afraid. He would never be afraid of He Juan. He was ready to hear everything about He Juan’s past, but it did not mean he could sit still whenever He Juan talked of himself in such a bitter and disparaging manner.
"...longer..."
He Juan blinked, "Pardon?"
"I said, you’re no longer living in the shadows." Mu Yuze stated firmly. "Now the whole world knows who you are and what you look like." Though the way he said it sounded like a retaliation or even a threat, He Juan instantly grasped Mu Yuze’s meaning and the look in his eyes softened.
"You’re right," he huffed. "I almost forgot about that." 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
Before he could do something stupid like seize Mu Yuze by the collar and kiss him senseless right on top of the table, He Juan cleared his throat and reached into his pocket. "Now that you remind me, before you even wish to unravel Ku Jin’s past, why don’t you take care of his minions first?"
He pulled a flashdisk out of his pocket and tossed it onto the table.
Mu Yuze’s heart skipped a beat when he saw that small item. This... Juan-gege must have asked Zhong Yun to identify the rats, and the information was all stored in that place! Alas, Mu Yuze couldn’t let it show that he knew what was going on, let alone who was giving those profiles to He Juan in the first place. So he put on a disgruntled look and demanded with a snarl, "What do you mean by his minions? What’s in that USB?"
He Juan gave him a mildly amused look, relishing in the scenario that only the two of them were privy to. "Why don’t you find out for yourself, Officer Mu?"
Mu Yuze pretended to be hesitant at first until he received Li Zhi’s green light. He then connected the flashdisk to the laptop and scanned the contents briefly, faking surprise. "This...!"
Mu Yuze instantly shot up to his feet with the laptop in his arms. "Please wait here for a while," he said curtly.
The split second their gazes locked in midair, they exchanged a knowing look. Then, Mu Yuze hurried to exit the room and met up with the others, discussing the shocking information XIU had just provided.
