Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 653: Unravel The Truth
"I remember," Mu Yuze said, his fists tightening.
Of course, he did. How could he forget? That was the very accident that officially branded XIU as a wanted criminal, and it also marked the time when He Juan seldom returned home. Mu Yuze could still recall the fear, dread and apprehension he felt every single day when he turned on the television, torn between wanting to hear more about He Juan and fearing that it would be bad news.
Everything had started with the Wunan Road Massacre.
"What about it?"
He Juan offered him a strained smile. "There was this one theory stating that the culprit was a mutant, but in the end it was treated more like a fake rumor. What if... it’s true? What if I told you that those so-called ’mutants’ or ’monsters’ truly exist?"
"...What?" Mu Yuze’s voice was barely a whisper, his pupils shaking in disbelief.
He Juan tilted his head up as he contemplated where to begin, and then he started to speak, "In this world, we have two primary genders – male and female – and three secondary genders – Alpha, Beta, and Omega. But those people... they could be considered a new gender altogether..."
And so, He Juan slowly unraveled everything. Starting from the moment when he discovered their presence ten years ago, to his discovery of the secret facilities and his attempts to destroy them all to free the experimental subjects within. His voice was low and smooth, with nary a fluctuation. His tone was unhurried; it was like he was recounting a dark and grim tale.
Yet nothing he said, not even a single word, was false. They were nothing but the truth — a heinous and inconceivable truth concealed in the dark corners of the world that was even more dreadful than murder or slaughter.
"What... the hell am I hearing right now?" Kang Guanyu muttered, his eyes wide in disbelief. "Captain??"
Similarly, Li Zhi was also in a state of shock, his hand hanging in midair. He did not even realize that his cigarette had slipped off his fingers and fallen to the ground.
"Within a year, I destroyed quite a number of facilities." He Juan’s voice carried a melancholic undertone as he reminisced about the past. "As for the exact count and location, I can no longer remember them. But if you want—" he raised his head and his words abruptly halted when he caught sight of Mu Yuze’s face.
A pained smile tugged on his lips as he reached out across the table to gently thumb away the lone tear that had rolled down the omega’s cheek.
"I didn’t share this to make you cry, Officer Mu."
It was a gesture too intimate for two people who were supposed to have fallen out, but at the moment, He Juan couldn’t care less about it. He did not mind Li Zhi and Kang Guanyu discovering the true nature of their relationship, as he had confirmed that both of them were trustworthy.
He Juan’s touch was exceedingly gentle and careful as if he was handling something fragile, yet the impact it had on Mu Yuze was nothing but devastating. His slender frame shook as he clasped He Juan’s hand and leaned into his touch, more and more droplets of tears falling onto He Juan’s skin. Biting down on his bottom lip, he desperately tried to suppress the cry that threatened to escape.
Alas, it was all futile, for his worst fear was coming true.
That year, he lost count of how many times he questioned himself – why did He Juan leave without so much as a word? Why didn’t he come back to visit even once? Had he gotten tired of Mu Yuze? Did he not want to live together anymore, or... had he found someone else in his life?
All those questions kept plaguing his mind. He felt sorrow and self-loathing at first, but then it eventually morphed into anger and grievances. He couldn’t understand why He Juan had to leave for so long, and that only served to deepen his bitterness toward the man. There was even a period of time when he hated He Juan for not coming back.
And now, when he finally learned the reason...
Oh, as it turned out, Juan-gege had never abandoned him – never even considered it. There was a valid reason why he couldn’t return, and Mu Yuze felt so awful and guilty for blaming it all on him when the circumstances left him with little choice but to stay away.
"Why..." he rasped with a choked voice. "Why didn’t you tell me...?"
It was a silly question, he knew. That year, how old was he again? Fifteen? Sixteen? He was but a minor, so why would He Juan tell him something like that? It was not like he could do anything to help. It was merely the selfish and greedy part of him asking – wanting to know every detail about the man he loved.
Yet despite his ridiculous demand, He Juan still answered him seriously,
"The timing was not right. That year, the world wasn’t prepared to accept their existence, especially after the Wunan Road Massacre. They would have only been branded as ’killing machines’ or ’cold-blooded monsters’. And once the label stuck, it would follow them until the rest of their lives and they would end up being ostracized by society. I didn’t want it to happen to them, so I had no choice but to wait..."
Alas, who knew that this wait would stretch on for seven long years?
"Sssh, don’t cry," He Juan gently wiped Mu Yuze’s tears away, yet the more he wiped, the more they poured out. "Where is my cold and headstrong Officer Mu? I was fine. Nothing happened to me. The operation went smoothly because I received so much help from others."
Mu Yuze shook his head silently, not trusting himself to speak. How could He Juan say he was fine when he ended up with a major accident that caused him severe memory loss?
A knock sounded on the door, and Captain Li Zhi stepped in. He did not comment on Mu Yuze’s messy appearance and instead instructed him, "Officer Mu, I will take over from here. Wash your face and calm yourself down."
He Juan’s hand lingered on his wet cheek for a second longer before he withdrew it. He urged softly with an encouraging smile, "Go."
Knowing that he was in no state to continue the session, Mu Yuze nodded, bowed in apology to his Captain and left the room in brisk steps. Li Zhi settled into the empty chair opposite He Juan and heaved out a long sigh, rubbing his face in frustration. "You’ve truly dropped a bomb on us, huh?"
He Juan averted his gaze from the door where Mu Yuze had disappeared into and shrugged, his expression returning to calmness with no visible emotions. "If I had regained my memory faster, you would have learned this sooner, Captain. I had not intended to wait for so long. They have suffered enough, so it’s time for the world to acknowledge their existence. And only you, as the law enforcers, can do this."
"Haa, fine..." Li Zhi groaned, still struggling to wrap his head around what he’d just heard. "So what does this... experiment... have to do with Xuanlong’s destruction? You could have stayed out of this instead of poking your nose in where you didn’t belong and putting your own life in danger, so why would you do so much for them?"
Almost at the same time as Li Zhi’s last words settled in the air, his earpiece buzzed and Kang Guanyu’s urgent voice rang out,
"Captain, no good! Something went wrong with the interrogation with the Boss of Xuanlong. He’s currently in the ICU as we speak!"
"It’s because," He Juan replied flatly in the next second, "the Boss of Xuanlong, Luo Xuan, is one of the experimental subjects. He is a mutated Omega."
