Chapter 652: Huge Scandal

Meanwhile, in the Yuyang City Bureau.

The interrogation proceeded in full swing. The previous day, they had gained precious intel from XIU regarding the rats who colluded with the Master Manipulator, but they were aware that the people they comprehended were merely small fry. There ought to be someone whose rank was high enough to place these rats in the local and city bureau— they just had no idea who that person was.

Alas, regardless of their identity, this was a delicate and tricky matter, which was why the atmosphere in the office was shrouded in a thick gloom. Everyone looked tense and on edge as if they were about to march into a bloody battlefield.

XIU’s appearance in the police bureau was no longer a secret, but the details of the interrogation were strictly confidential until Li Zhi approved sharing the information. Even Rong Simo, Captain of the Anti-narcotics Division next door, was not privy to the specifics. One could imagine the pressure on the Violent Crime’s members these days, especially their Captain, Li Zhi.

Captain Li’s eyebags were so deep and dark that they almost reached his cheeks. The same went with the others, though not as severe.

In the monitor room, he stood by the open window in the corner, taking a drag of his cigarette. His sharp and alert gaze remained fixed on the impeccably dressed long-haired man who had just recounted the story of how Xuanlong was first built, sending the officers into disarray.

Mu Yuze’s voice drifted out from the speaker in the room, "What exactly is your relationship with the Boss of Xuanlong?"

"Our relationship?" The corner of He Juan’s lips twitched into an almost imperceptible smile.

Li Zhi’s eyes always twitched whenever he saw that kind of smile on He Juan, as it reminded him too much of a cunning snake— this was also the reason why he couldn’t bring himself to trust He Juan fully.

Despite knowing that his future was bleak, he still came here willingly and showed such cooperative demeanor toward the police. It could be said that he was digging his own grave. No sane person would attempt something like that, especially not XIU. So why was he doing this? To plead leniency during the trial later? Or... was it because of Mu Yuze? Was there something between them that Li Zhi was not privy to?

"I couldn’t put a name on our relationship," He Juan shook his head, almost wistfully. "We were more than mere acquaintances, but less than friends. We never shared anything about ourselves to each other unless absolutely necessary. You know the drill, Officer Mu. In the underworld, secrecy is a must. The less people know, the better."

"More than acquaintances?" Mu Yuze continued with a series of questions. "But in the end, wasn’t it you who caused Xuanlong’s destruction? Did he have something to do with your memory loss? Why did you two have a fallout?"

"Patience, Officer Mu," He Juan chuckled, taking a sip out of his tea. "To answer your questions, I must reveal something... extremely shocking. But please allow me to ask first. How many people are there next door and how trustworthy they are? I don’t want anything I say to leak before the time is ripe."

Li Zhi’s hand that held the cigarette trembled, causing the ash to fall on the windowsill. Something extremely shocking?

Unbidden, Li Zhi’s mind drifted to a certain event seven years ago, a few days before his late Captain, Yi Peizhi, commenced an ambush operation that cost him his life. During that time, Yi Peizhi behaved unlike his usual self. He seemed preoccupied with another matter, often running out to meet his so-called informant. His mood oscillated between extremes – sometimes he would be in a foul mood, and other times he would abruptly laugh out loud. When Li Zhi asked him about it on one occasion they were smoking together on the roof, Yi Peizhi told him with a grin,

"I have a feeling that our bureau will become famous soon! A huge scandal will break out, and it’s on the level enough to alert the Interpol. Don’t you think it’s amazing?"

Li Zhi was instantly alarmed. "A huge scandal? What is it about?"

"I don’t know either," Yi Peizhi shifted his gaze forward and narrowed his eyes, sighing. "It’s not the time for me, us, or anyone else to know. Not yet."

"According to who? Your informant?" Li Zhi asked curiously.

But Yi Peizhi only offered him a mysterious smile in response.

Li Zhi had no chance to ask him further about it because they were swamped with work, on top of having to hunt XIU down. He’d thought that he would get the chance later, but who could have foreseen that Captain Yi, the Director and almost half of the team would meet with a tragedy a few days later?

He had no idea why, but He Juan’s secretive attitude right now reminded him of Captain Yi Peizhi back then. Could the thing he wants to tell have something to do with the scandal Yi Peizhi had mentioned back then?

Li Zhi’s instinct was telling him— yes.

"Captain?" The technician inquired. "How should we proceed?"

"Tell him the truth."

Inside the interrogation room, Mu Yuze said, "There are only Captain Li, a few members from the Violent Crime, and the technicians."

But He Juan was not satisfied. "Except for Captain Li, everyone should leave. Oh, Kang Guanyu can stay. He will be the one to take over the technician’s job. I don’t want any recording devices either."

"Wha—" Everyone was immediately provoked by his brazen demand. A storm of protests and curses erupted in the air. "Who does he think he is, telling us to leave?!"

"That son of a bitch, does he think he can order us around as he pleases?!"

"Wait, why is Kang Guanyu an exception?!"

Kang Guanyu hastily raised both hands and defended himself, "I–I don’t know anything, I swear!"

Li Zhi’s firm and resolute voice cut through the chaos, "Everyone leave, except for Kang Guanyu."

"Captain!"

"Leave," Li Zhi stressed, his tone leaving no room for rebuttal. Left with no other choice, the officers and technicians could only exit the room one after another, grumbling under their breaths. However, there was one person among them who appeared more agitated than the rest, biting their nails anxiously.

Once everyone had left, Li Zhi nodded at Kang Guanyu, who promptly took a seat and took over the communication device. "Okay, everyone is gone! Only me and Captain are left. I have also turned off the recording."

Mu Yuze confirmed, "The room is clear."

"Alright," He Juan leaned back against his seat and heaved out a long sigh, as if steeling himself for a long talk. A trace of exhaustion appeared in his eyes. "Officer Mu, do you remember the Wunan Road Massacre that happened seven years ago? I was the main culprit back then. The police suspected me of gathering power to build my own army."
