Chapter 662: Natural Instinct

Mu Yuze occupied the shotgun seat and let the Alpha drive the car into the garage. After turning off the engine, He Juan opened the door and said, "Let’s go. They have all been waiting for you."

They? Did he mean Zhong Yun and Chen Youzhi?

The question lingered in his mind even as He Juan led him through the side door. They entered a spotless and luxurious kitchen akin to those seen on cooking shows, and Mu Yuze seemed to detect the faint fragrance of food in the air, giving a touch of warmth to the cold ambience.

Leaving the kitchen, He Juan proceeded to guide him around a grand staircase until they arrived at the living room, where three people were seated on the couch.

Wait a moment, if two of them were Chen Youzhi and Zhong Yun, then the other one was—

Entirely by reflex, Mu Yuze’s gaze shifted to the only woman in the house. As she was facing the staircase, she was the first one to notice He Juan and Mu Yuze’s presence.

The moment their eyes met, Mu Yuze felt his body stiffen as a surge of discomfort and uneasiness coursed through him. She did not even do anything, yet there was just something about her sharp, accessing gaze and her domineering presence that made Mu Yuze put his guard up, just like a rabbit frozen at the sight of a predator.

Mu Yuze could guess what had triggered such an unusual reaction from him. It was both his instinct as an officer and an Omega, clamoring at him that the woman before him was extremely dangerous!

Who was she? Why would she be here with Juan-gege? More importantly, why did he feel like he had seen her somewhere before...

Mu Yuze unknowingly took a step backward, as his instinct compelled him to create as far distance as possible from her. But then he ended up bumping into He Juan, who held his shoulders and peered down at him in worry. "Xiao Ze, you look pale. Are you okay?"

As soon as the warmth of He Juan’s body seeped into his back, relief flooded Mu Yuze’s chest. He sagged toward the Alpha, gasping for the much-needed air. He did not even realize he had been holding his breath all along. "Gege, she..." he rasped, confusion and apprehension evident in his tone.

Their voices drew the attention of the two other people in the living room.

"Boss, is there something wrong?" Chen Youzhi asked with furrowed brows.

"I think I scared your Omega, XIU," the woman remarked without changing her expression. She did not look like she was mocking Mu Yuze for being intimidated by a stranger he had just met, but merely stating it as a matter of fact. Rising to her feet, she added, "I will make a phone call outside. Please excuse me."

"Ah..." Understanding dawned on He Juan as he held Mu Yuze closer to him as if wishing to dwarf the omega with his body. He murmured reassuring words, "It’s okay, Xiao Ze. Everything is fine. It’s just your natural instinct, telling you to avoid her at all cost. That’s very normal."

To Mu Yuze, nowhere felt nearly as safe as being in his Alpha’s arms. Surrounded by He Juan’s scent, he quickly regained his bearings and realized that his reaction had been over the top.

As an officer of the Violent Crime Unit, what kind of criminal had he not seen before? What kind of brutality had he not witnessed? Previously, regardless of whether the other person was an Alpha, Beta or Omega, or how messy the crime scene was, Mu Yuze had never felt as unsettled as he did now. His stomach was churning, and his hunch told him that if he were to take a whiff of her pheromones, he would definitely vomit his guts out for sure.

This had never happened to him before.

"It’s... normal?" He asked from where his nose was buried into the crook of the Alpha’s neck, puzzled. "How could it be?"

He Juan replied to him patiently as if he was teaching a kindergarten student, "First, it’s because you’re an Omega, and second, because you’ve never been exposed to their presence before. That’s why it’s very normal for you to feel daunted. Honestly speaking, it’s remarkable how you can see through her at a glance. Is it because you’re a police officer?"

Those two abstract reasons were more than enough for Mu Yuze to piece together the puzzle. He snapped his gaze up, astonished. "Don’t tell me..."

"You’re right," He Juan gently pinched the bridge of his nose. "She’s one of the mutants I told you about. To be exact, she’s a mutated Alpha."

"Oh..." Mu Yuze’s eyes widened in realization as everything clicked into place into his mind. No wonder... no wonder he had reacted like that. So it was all because she was a mutated Alpha, which forced his instincts to be wary of the danger she could bring forth to him – as an Omega.

Now that he had pieced together the cause and effect, Mu Yuze grew embarrassed by his own reaction. If he were in her shoes, he wouldn’t be happy either to have someone freak out just by meeting his eyes. Furthermore, she was He Juan’s acquaintance, and Mu Yuze had made the worst first impression! Oh God, how mortifying!

"Gege..." he tugged on the hem of He Juan’s shirt anxiously.

He Juan could guess what he was thinking at a glance. "Don’t worry," he flashed a reassuring smile. "She’s only stepping out to make a phone call. I will introduce you two later. For now, though..." his gaze went through Mu Yuze’s shoulder, and only then did Mu Yuze recall that there was another person he had to address first.

Bracing himself, Mu Yuze turned to meet Zhong Yun’s eyes across the room. He had seen Zhong Yun when the man was suffering from his withdrawal symptoms, but this was the first time they had ever met face-to-face. Mu Yuze almost couldn’t associate this gaunt, skinny and pale man to his cheerful and easygoing high school buddy.

A sour feeling arose in his chest, "Zhong Yun..."

"Mu Yuze..." a bitter smile hung on the man’s lips. "It’s nice to meet you again. I see that... you’ve been well."

Clenching his fists, Mu Yuze approached him and took everyone by surprise when he suddenly bowed his head.

"M–Mu Yuze!" Shocked, Zhong Yun reflexively reached out to help him raise his head, but Mu Yuze was adamant on doing this. He owed Zhong Yun an apology – not only him, but their entire team.

"I’m sorry," he began, his tone filled with remorse. "I’m so sorry, Zhong Yun. It’s my team who handled Mr. Qin’s case but we failed to catch the real perpetrator and deliver him justice. We even caused you to become like this. For that... I’m extremely sorry."

The rims of Zhong Yun’s eyes reddened. "No, no, XIU has explained everything to me. None of this is your fault! So please don’t bow your head to me...!" He snuck a flustered glance at He Juan, who remained watching by the sidelines with no intention of interfering.

Under Zhong Yun’s insistence, Mu Yuze finally raised his head. With a solemn look, he declared, "The officers who tricked you into consuming drugs have all been apprehended. As we speak, the traffic bureau is tracking down the Manipulator. Rest assured, we will do everything in our power to capture that bastard."

Zhong Yun blinked, seemingly taken aback by his somber and formal report. Then he let out a huff, the corner of his lips curved into a faint smile— and there it was, the shadow of the person he used to be. "Yeah," he replied, his voice tinged with suppressed emotions. "I have no doubt in you, Mu Yuze. After all, you’re the smartest person in your grade. Please... please allow Qin-ge to rest in peace."
