Cards Of The Silent King-Chapter 14: Hana Brings Snacks
Morning light filtered through the school windows. Dust motes danced in the beams. The hallway smelled of floor wax and old paper. Students rushed past. Shoes squeaked on linoleum. Lockers slammed.
Kaito walked slowly. His body felt heavy. The warning from Yuki Onna lingered like a cold spot in his chest. Hunger. The word echoed. Something waking. Something consuming.
He stopped at Locker 214. His combination. Three numbers. Left. Right. Left. The latch clicked.
He opened the door.
Inside, his shoes were arranged neatly. His gym bag hung on the hook. Nothing else.
Except a paper bag. Brown. Plain. Sitting on the shelf.
Kaito reached out. His fingers brushed the paper. It was warm. Still holding heat from somewhere.
He picked it up. It was light. Not heavy enough to be books. Soft enough to be food.
He looked down the hallway. Empty. No one watching. No one waiting.
He opened the bag.
Inside, two onigiri. Wrapped in plastic. Seaweed separate to keep it crisp. A small container of cut fruit. Strawberries. An apple.
And a note.
Small piece of white paper. Folded once. Handwriting neat. Blue ink.
He unfolded it.
Three words.
Eat something.
No name. No signature. No explanation.
He stood there. The hallway noise faded. The squeaking shoes. The laughing voices. The distant bell. All of it muted.
He looked at the note.
Food. Ember’s voice flickered in his pocket. The Seven of Hearts warmed. Smells like rice. And seaweed. And care.
Quiet.
She cares. Ember sounded happy. Humans show care with calories. It is efficient.
Kuro’s voice cut in. Cold. Sharp. It is a tether. She binds you to this place. To this routine. To this life you cannot keep.
Know.
Then why keep it.
Kaito did not answer. He folded the note. He put it back in the bag. He closed the locker.
He walked to the classroom. He sat at his desk. He put the bag inside his drawer. Hidden. Safe.
The bell rang. Students filed in. Ryota talked about a movie. Jin read a book. Hana walked in.
She did not look at him. Not immediately. She put her bag down. She took out her notebook. She talked to the girl beside her about homework.
Then she looked.
Her eyes met his. Brown. Bright. Quiet.
She did not smile. She did not nod. She just looked. Checking. Verifying.
Kaito held her gaze. One second. Two.
He tapped his drawer. Once. Invisible under the desk.
Her shoulders relaxed. Just slightly. She turned back to her friend. She started talking about colors. About paint. About art class.
Kaito opened his textbook. He looked at the page. The words blurred.
He thought about the note. Eat something.
Not Are you hungry. Not I made this. Not Please take care of yourself.
Just an instruction. Simple. Direct. Like him.
She understood. She knew he would not accept pity. She knew he would not accept fuss. She gave him an order. Something he could obey without feeling weak.
She is smart. Yuki Onna’s voice whispered. Rare. She seldom spoke during the day. She sees the weight. She does not try to lift it. She just offers sustenance.
Know.
Do not eat it. Kuro advised. Food is energy. Energy is life. You are rationing life.
Need energy.
For what. To die faster.
For them.
Kuro fell silent. The Ace of Spades cooled in his pocket.
The class dragged on. History. Dates. Wars. Empires falling. Kaito wrote notes. He did not read them. His hand moved automatically.
His mind was on the drawer. On the bag. On the warmth.
Lunch bell rang.
Chairs scraped. Bags unzipped. The room erupted into noise.
Ryota turned around. Cafeteria? Or roof? I have chips. Good chips. Spicy.
Kaito stood. Roof.
Alone? Ryota asked. He looked at the drawer. He looked at Kaito’s hand resting near it.
Yes.
Okay. I will save you a seat. In case you change your mind. Which you will not. But I will save it anyway.
Ryota left. Jin followed. He paused at the door. He looked at Kaito. He looked at the drawer.
Eat.
Jin knew. He did not ask what. He just knew Kaito needed to.
Kaito waited. The room emptied. Hana was the last to leave. She stopped at his desk.
She did not speak. She placed a small bottle of tea on the corner. Green. Unsweetened.
She walked away.
Kaito waited ten seconds. Then he went to the roof.
The wind was cold. The sky was grey. He sat by the ventilation unit. Same spot as always.
He took out the bag. He opened the plastic on the onigiri. He peeled the seaweed. It cracked softly.
He took a bite. Rice. Salt. Pickled plum. Sour. Salty. Warm.
He chewed. He swallowed.
Good? Ember asked.
Yes.
Told you. Humans are good at cooking. Better than demons.
Kaito ate the second one. He opened the fruit. He ate a strawberry. Sweet. Cold.
He took out the note. He unfolded it.
Eat something.
He read it. Once.
He folded it. He put it in his pocket. Near the cards. Near the Ace.
He took it out again. He unfolded it.
He read it. Twice.
The paper was soft now. Creased from his fingers.
Why read it again. Kuro asked. The words do not change.
Remember.
Remember what.
This.
Kaito looked at the city. The Grey District. The cracks. The Hunger waking in the dark.
Yuki Onna said he would feel sixty by twenty five. She said he would ration his life. She said people do not rebuild.
But here was food. Here was tea. Here was a note. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
Someone wanted him to stay. Not the King of Cards. Not the Silent Guardian. Just him. Kaito. The boy in the third row.
He read the note. Three times.
You are keeping it. Kuro sounded resigned. It will get worn. It will fall apart.
Fix it.
You cannot fix paper forever.
Try.
Kaito folded the note. He put it back in his pocket. He drank the tea. It was cold. It washed down the rice.
He sat there until the bell rang. He did not move. He listened to the wind. He listened to the city.
No cracks. No shimmers. Just life.
He stood up. He brushed the crumbs off his pants. He walked to the door.
He went back to class. He sat down.
Hana looked back. She saw the empty bag on his desk. She saw the bottle of tea.
She did not smile. She did not need to.
She turned forward. She opened her notebook.
Kaito took out his pen. He touched his pocket. The note was there. Soft. Warm.
He opened his textbook. He looked at the page.
The words were clear now.
He wrote down the date.
He wrote down the topic.
He ate the food. He kept the note.
He would fight the Hunger. He would seal the cracks. He would ration his life.
But not today.
Today he would eat.
