Cards Of The Silent King-Chapter 22: Cracks in the Grey District
The Grey District did not sleep. It waited.
The streets were narrow. The buildings leaned toward each other like old friends sharing secrets. Brick facades were cracked. Windows were boarded. Neon signs flickered with dying buzzes. The air smelled of wet rust and old oil.
Kaito walked the perimeter. His boots made no sound on the wet pavement. He kept his hands in his pockets. His fingers traced the edges of the cards through the fabric.
Zephyr floated ahead. She was invisible. Only the movement of trash on the ground marked her path. A candy wrapper skittered across the street. A bottle cap rolled into the gutter.
Zephyr said, Clear ahead. Two blocks. No signatures.
Kaito said, Check the alley.
Zephyr said, Checking. Wait. There is a hum. Near the old bookstore. Low frequency.
Kaito turned left. He walked down the alley. The walls were high. They blocked the moonlight. Shadows pooled in the corners.
He stopped at the back door of the bookstore. The wood was rotting. Paint peeled in strips.
He placed his hand on the wall. He closed his eyes. He felt the vibration. A low thrum. Like a engine idling.
Kaito said, Seal one.
Kuro said, Stable. For now.
Kaito said, For how long.
Kuro said, Days. Maybe weeks. The pressure is increasing.
Kaito removed his hand. The vibration faded. He marked the location in his mind. North west corner. Bookstore. Stable.
He continued walking. He turned right at the intersection. The streetlight above was broken. Darkness swallowed the corner.
Zephyr said, Next one. Park bench. Third one from the left.
Kaito walked into the small park. Trees grew wild here. Grass was overgrown. A single bench sat under a lamp that worked.
He sat down. He looked at the ground beneath the bench. The grass was dead. Circular patch. Brown. Brittle.
Kaito said, Seal two.
Akira’s voice came from the card. He said, Weak. The earth is thin here.
Kaito said, Reinforce.
Kaito tapped his foot on the ground. He pushed energy down. Into the soil. Into the roots. The dead grass glowed faintly. Green. Then faded.
The vibration stopped. The ground felt solid again.
Kaito stood up. He brushed dirt from his pants.
Kaito said, Moving.
He walked out of the park. He crossed the street. He entered the residential block. Apartments stacked four stories high. Fire escapes zigzagged down the fronts.
Zephyr said, Three. Four. Five. All stable. No leaks.
Kaito said, Show me six.
Zephyr said, Follow the wind.
The wind shifted. It blew cold. Toward the old textile factory. The building was abandoned. Windows were broken. Chains hung on the gate.
Kaito climbed the fence. He dropped into the yard. Weeds grew up to his knees.
He walked to the side door. It was locked. He did not open it. He did not need to.
The air shimmered near the frame. Heat haze in the cold night.
Kaito said, Leak.
Kuro said, Small. But persistent. Something is pushing from the other side.
Kaito drew the Queen of Ice. He did not summon Yuki Onna. He just held the card. Cold radiated from the paper.
He pressed the card against the air. The shimmer resisted. It hissed. Steam rose.
Kaito pushed harder. His breath misted. The card froze the air. The shimmer cracked. It sealed.
The cold lingered. Frost formed on the door handle.
Kaito said, Fixed.
Kuro said, Temporary. It will open again.
Kaito said, I will be back.
He put the card away. He climbed the fence. He dropped to the street.
He checked his watch. Two in the morning. He had one more location. The most important one.
He walked toward the center of the district. The old shrine where he found Akira. It was not the shrine itself. It was the tree beside it. A giant oak. Ancient. Roots deep in the earth.
Kaito stopped at the base of the tree. He placed both hands on the bark. Rough. Deep grooves.
He felt nothing. No vibration. No hum. No cold.
Kaito said, Seven.
Zephyr said, Silent. Too silent.
Kaito said, Dangerous.
Kuro said, The calm before the storm. You know this.
Kaito said, Yes.
He stepped back. He looked at the tree. It stood tall. Leaves rustled without wind.
Kaito said, Map.
He closed his eyes. He visualized the four block radius. Seven points. Seven seals.
One leaking. One silent. Five stable.
He knew every brick. Every crack. Every shadow. This was his territory. His responsibility.
If one failed. The entities would pour out. Into the streets. Into the homes. Into the school.
Hana lived three blocks east. Ryota lived two blocks north. Jin lived on the edge of the district.
They were inside the map. They were inside the danger.
Kaito opened his eyes. He looked at his hands. They were trembling. Slightly. From exhaustion. From the cold.
Kuro said, You are reaching your limit.
Kaito said, Know.
Kuro said, You cannot hold seven seals forever. You need sleep. You need food. You need help.
Kaito said, No help.
Kuro said, Stubborn. You will break. Then what.
Kaito said, Fix it.
Kuro said, You cannot fix yourself if you are shattered.
Kaito turned away from the tree. He started walking. Toward the edge of the district. Toward his apartment.
Zephyr flew beside him. She was a breeze against his cheek.
Zephyr said, You know. The girl. Hana. She is walking home now.
Kaito stopped. He said, Now.
Zephyr said, Late shift. Library. She is on the main road. Safe. But tired.
Kaito said, Watch her.
Zephyr said, Always. I am the wind. I am everywhere.
Kaito said, Keep her safe.
Zephyr said, I will. But Kaito. You cannot watch everyone. You cannot seal everything. You are one boy.
Kaito said, Enough.
Zephyr said, Okay. Okay. Just saying. For the record.
Kaito walked faster. The streets blurred. The buildings passed. The lights flickered.
He reached his apartment building. He climbed the stairs. He unlocked the door.
Inside, it was quiet. Dark. Cold.
He walked to the desk. He took out a map. Paper. Large. Folded.
He spread it out. He took a red pen. He marked the seven locations.
Bookstore. Park. Factory. Shrine. Three residential points.
He circled the factory. Leaking.
He circled the shrine. Silent.
He wrote numbers beside them. Dates. Times. Pressure levels.
He was building a database. A history. A record of the war.
Kuro said, You obsess.
Kaito said, Prepare.
Kuro said, For what.
Kaito said, The end.
Kuro said, You think it is coming.
Kaito said, Yes.
Kaito put the pen down. He looked at the map. The red circles looked like wounds.
He thought about Hana. Walking home alone. He thought about Ryota. Suspecting secrets. He thought about Jin. Knowing the truth.
They were part of the map now. Not locations. Variables.
If the seals broke. They would be the first to know.
Kaito folded the map. He put it in the drawer. He locked it.
He walked to the window. He looked out at the Grey District.
The lights were dim. The shadows were deep.
Seven seals. Four blocks. One city.
He touched the glass. It was cold.
Kaito said, Hold.
The city did not answer. The buildings stood silent. The streets waited.
Kaito turned away. He walked to the bed. He lay down. He did not take off his jacket.
He closed his eyes. He listened.
He listened for the sound of tearing reality. He listened for the scream of a entity. He listened for the wind.
Zephyr whispered. She was outside. In the air.
Zephyr said, Sleep. I will watch.
Kaito said, Thanks.
Zephyr said, Do not mention it. Literally. Do not mention it. I have a reputation.
Kaito almost smiled. He did not. He slept.
The map was in the drawer. The cards were in his pocket. The district was outside.
He held the line.
For tonight.
