Chapter 84: Chapter 84: A Troubled Heart Leads to Displacement

Lianne Vance remained silent. It wasn’t out of pity, but because she believed life was sacrosanct. No matter how grave the mistake, punishment was one thing, but it shouldn’t cost someone their life.

She didn’t know when Kenneth Yates had become so cold and heartless, but as his mother, she knew she bore some of the responsibility. She had pushed him into the adult world too soon and forcibly separated him from Thea Shaw. After that, he rarely smiled and became indifferent to everything, as if he were completely detached from the world.

It was already seven in the morning when Kenneth Yates drove back to Veridian Community. Summer Lancaster wasn’t home. ’She probably left for work early,’ he thought. So, he changed his clothes, ate a quick breakfast, and headed to the company.

In his office, he was restless. ’I was too harsh yesterday,’ he thought, ’leaving her all alone to go to the river.’ After mulling it over, he picked up the phone.

"Put me through to Director Lancaster."

"President, Director Lancaster didn’t come in today." The secretary was puzzled. ’Don’t they live together? How can he not know she isn’t here?’ HR hadn’t even flagged her for the unexcused absence, assuming Kenneth had approved it.

"What? Did Summer ask for time off?" Kenneth shot up from his chair, his voice rising sharply.

"No, it’s... an unexcused absence..."

SLAM! Kenneth slammed the phone down in frustration. ’She didn’t come to work? And she’s not at home.’

"Rong, did you take Summer home yesterday?"

The person on the other end paused. "I didn’t see Summer. I flew back to Francelia right after the expo. Did something happen to her?"

"No, it’s nothing. I have to go."

After hanging up, Kenneth Yates hurled his phone to the ground. ’Did what happened last time happen to Summer again? Damn it, I was way too careless.’

He snatched his phone off the floor and stormed out of the office.

"Cancel all my appointments for today."

Before his secretary could even react, Kenneth Yates was gone in a flash.

"Dominic, have your men search the entire city for Summer."

"Boss, don’t you think you’re overreacting? She’s probably just at a friend’s house, or with her father."

The mention of friends made Kenneth suddenly think of Melody Donovan, Summer’s best friend. ’Right, and there’s Caleb Bell,’ he realized. Though he wanted nothing to do with the man, it was highly probable that Caleb had taken Summer. He had to find him and demand an explanation.

"You go find Melody Donovan. I’ll go to Gregory Lancaster’s." Before Dominic Thorne could even reply, Kenneth had already hung up.

Dominic Thorne hung up and sprang into action. He still hadn’t forgotten how Melody Donovan had kicked him and run off last time. He planned to settle that score.

Melody Donovan was still asleep, living the life of a wealthy heiress to the fullest. The doorbell rang. Melody dragged herself reluctantly from her warm bed. ’Who could be here so early in the morning, waking me up?’

Melody glanced at the clock. Ten o’clock in the morning. ’Some "early" morning!’ she thought sarcastically.

Yawning, Melody irritably flung the door open, her eyes still heavy with sleep. The person standing there made her instantly wide awake. "What are you doing here?"

Dominic Thorne didn’t speak, his gaze dipping down to her pink pajamas. She wasn’t wearing a bra, and her nipples were pressing against the thin fabric.

Melody immediately crossed her arms over her chest and ran a frustrated hand through her hair, making the already messy locks even more disheveled.

"Pervert! If you’ve got nothing to say, get lost." With that, she tried to slam the door shut. SLAM! But Dominic, anticipating the move, stuck his foot in the way. The door slammed hard against his leg but didn’t latch.
