Chapter 86: Chapter 86: He Won’t Care About Me

He had held her and kissed her. Their lips had even melded together. But he was like that with other women, too. It didn’t mean he liked them—and that included her.

"Um..." Melody Donovan began.

"What?" Dominic Thorne asked, looking at her.

"Please, just forget what happened. I think I might be running a fever. I wasn’t thinking clearly." Melody Donovan kept her head down, wishing she could find a hole to crawl into. She couldn’t believe she had been the one to so boldly meet his advances just now.

Dominic Thorne said nothing. He had lost control, too. ’His usual games at parties were one thing, but he’d never put his heart into it. He’d never wanted to possess someone so fiercely. When it came down to it, he was just a man who didn’t understand love.’

Summer Lancaster was truly exhausted. In the time it took Caleb Bell to get her a glass of water, she had fallen asleep on the sofa. Seeing this, Caleb gently carried her into the bedroom and tucked her in. He sat by the bed, watching her for a long time. ’If I hadn’t gone abroad to study,’ he wondered, ’would I be the one by her side right now? Happiness is something you have to fight for. I’ve never believed in fate. Your destiny is in your own hands. Fate is just an excuse people use to comfort themselves when they can’t get what they want.’

Summer Lancaster’s breathing grew steady, and she mumbled something in her sleep. Caleb Bell pulled the blanket she had kicked off back over her, then closed the door and went to his study.

A ray of morning sunlight streamed into the room. The woman on the bed frowned slightly before her beautiful eyes fluttered open.

Summer Lancaster stared in surprise at the unfamiliar surroundings. She only remembered coming to Caleb Bell’s house; she had no memory of anything after that. Summer scratched her head. ’Did I just fall asleep?’

On the nightstand was a women’s dress—a light purple one with gathered shoulders. Underneath it, to her surprise, were a new bra and underwear. Summer was mortified. ’I can’t believe Caleb is so meticulous.’ She picked up the bra and checked the tag. He hadn’t just bought a random one; it was exactly her size!

Blushing, Summer Lancaster went into the bathroom, took a shower, and changed into the clothes Caleb had prepared for her.

When Summer Lancaster came downstairs, Caleb Bell was sitting on the sofa, sipping a cup of coffee.

"Summer, you’re awake. How did you sleep?" Caleb Bell said when he saw her, setting down his coffee cup and newspaper.

"I slept great. Caleb, thank you for letting me stay here. I really don’t know where else I would have gone."

"You’re always welcome here."

Summer Lancaster didn’t know how to respond, and an awkward silence fell between them.

"The dress fits you perfectly!" Caleb was the first to break the silence. He walked over to Summer and gently tucked her long hair behind her ear. The instant his fingertips brushed against her neck, a jolt shot through him, but Summer quickly pulled away. She moved to stand opposite him. "Caleb, thank you. I should get to work now."

"Let me take you out somewhere fun," Caleb said, his disappointment showing as he withdrew his hand.

Summer Lancaster just looked at him, not saying a word.

"Consider it payment for letting you stay the night!"

"Fine. Where are we going?"

"Let’s have breakfast first, then we’ll head out. And you’re in for a treat—I made it myself," Caleb said, winking proudly.

"You can cook?" Summer was amazed. ’Would a pampered young master who’s never had to lift a finger actually know his way around a kitchen?’ Someone like Kenneth Yates, for example—she’d never once seen him set foot in a kitchen. The thought of Kenneth reminded her she should probably call him. She pulled out her phone, only to find the battery was dead. Shoving it back in her bag, she figured it didn’t matter. ’He won’t be worried about me anyway!’

Caleb brought the breakfast out, and Summer eagerly crowded around. "Wow! Caleb, this looks amazing! Did you secretly learn how to cook just to impress girls?"

Caleb smiled. "I did. But I’ve only ever cooked for one..."

Summer felt like she’d just walked right into that one. She quickly looked down at her food, hoping to hide her embarrassment.
