Chapter 196: Hypothetical Question

Anton’s gaze shifted back and forth between Mary and the road ahead, anxiously awaiting her response. However, he grew impatient as she simply stared at him, completely bewildered.

Feeling his impatience mounting, Anton nervously questioned, "Didn’t you say you were ready to settle down if the right person came along? Am I not that person for you?"

Suddenly, he became aware of the potential consequences. What if Mary rejected him? The thought of not only his own heartbreak but also the disappointment it would bring to his parents overwhelmed him.

Finally, Mary snapped out of her daze and smirked. "Alright, I’ll accept your marriage proposal," she declared.

Anton was taken aback by her answer and fixated his gaze solely on her. He witnessed her smile before returning her attention to the window. The realization struck him: she had actually said yes. He couldn’t believe his ears.

"Are you serious? You are agreeing to marry me?" He cannot believe she said yes.

"Yes, I’m serious," Mary confirmed.

"ANTON! WATCH OUT!" 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

His father’s voice pierced through the air as Anton’s concentration wavered, causing him to veer off course. Reacting swiftly, Anton steered the wheel back into the correct lane, eliciting loud honks from the cars ahead and behind them.

Once Anton regained control of the steering wheel, Mary’s voice trembled with concern as she exclaimed, "Are you out of your mind? Why would you drive without looking ahead?"

She clutched her chest, attempting to calm her rapidly beating heart. The sight of oncoming cars had sent shockwaves through her as if her very essence had momentarily escaped her body.

"You made me lose focus. How could I not? You just said yes to me, and..." Anton’s words trailed off as Mary interrupted, still struggling to shake off the shock of their near-accident.

She couldn’t believe that their lives had been put at risk because Anton’s thoughts had wandered elsewhere.

"Of course, I would say yes! You posed a hypothetical question, and naturally, I responded hypothetically. Now, if you could please redirect your attention to driving instead of conjuring up different scenarios in your mind," Mary retorted, her voice tinged with irritation. Leaning her elbow against the window, she propped her chin upon her knuckles, exuding a mix of annoyance and weariness.

Anton chose not to engage in further argument, but unbeknownst to Mary, a wide grin spread across his face, reaching from ear to ear. Little did she know that Anton and his parents were overjoyed by her response.

Despite her claim that it was a hypothetical answer, he couldn’t help but believe that there was an underlying hint of truth behind her words. The glimmer of hope in his heart grew stronger, fueling his optimism for their future together.

Soon they arrived at the hospital where Amy and Henry are. Mary wasted no time in walking to Amy’s room. She is still worried about what will she say to her or at least how is she going to start their conversation.

Last night before she went to sleep, thoughts raced through her mind, contemplating various phrases she could use. Will she say, ’I’m sorry for your loss’ or should it be ’It’s alright, you’ll get through it’? She had constructed countless sentences in her head, but none of them felt quite right.

Mary’s utmost desire was to provide comfort to her best friend, but she felt lost in the face of this tragedy. She knew deep down that the pain of losing a child is a different kind of sorrow compared to the loss of parents or siblings. Despite her uncertainty, one thing remained certain: she wanted to be by Amy’s side, offering support no matter what.

As Mary approached Rei and Sandra in the hallway outside Amy’s room, a sense of heaviness weighed upon her every step.

Rei, noticing Anton’s inquisitive expression, spoke up, "The doctors are inside with her. We’re waiting for them to finish their examination."

Eager to get an update on Amy’s condition, Mary turned to Sandra and asked with concern, "How is she doing?"

Sandra grasped Mary’s hands gently and offered reassurance, saying, "She’s still experiencing some minor headaches. The doctor believes it’s due to dehydration and her body adjusting to gradual changes. But they assured us that she will recover soon."

After waiting for some time, the doctors exited the room accompanied by Henry. As his gaze fell upon Mary, Henry offered her a reassuring nod, granting her the go-ahead to enter and meet his wife. The unspoken signal conveyed his trust and invitation for Mary to join Amy’s side during this pivotal moment.

Mary stood in front of the door, taking a moment to compose herself before entering. With a deep breath, she pushed open the door and scanned the room, quickly spotting Amy standing by the window, lost in her own thoughts. Mary quietly closed the door behind her, but Amy remained so absorbed in her thoughts that she didn’t register Mary’s presence drawing nearer.

"Babe..." Mary whispered softly, her voice barely audible.

Startled, Amy suddenly turned around, locking eyes with Mary. In that instant, time seemed to freeze as they locked gazes, the weight of their emotions manifest in the air.

Without uttering another word, they instinctively reached out for each other, finding solace in their embrace. Their tears flowed freely as they clung to one another, uncaring of the world outside. They sobbed and wailed, allowing their grief to pour out, not minding if others in the hallway might hear them.

Meanwhile, outside the room, Henry gripped the doorknob tightly, his shoulders slumping in sorrow. The sound of Amy’s anguished cries pierced his heart, fueling a surge of rage within him. His knuckles turned white as he clenched the doorknob, the weight of his emotions overwhelming. It wasn’t just heartbreak he felt at that moment; it was an indescribable mixture of pain, anger, and thirst for revenge.

Feeling the weight of Henry’s anguish, Anton reached out and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, offering a gesture of assurance. In that touch, Henry found a small measure of support, a reminder that he wasn’t alone in his pain. Taking a deep breath, Henry released his grip on the doorknob and turned to face Anton.

"We will make them pay," Anton vowed, his voice filled with determination. With those words, he offered Henry a promise of justice, a shared resolve to hold accountable those responsible for their current turmoil. The two men embraced, finding strength in their friendship and mutual support as they prepared to face the challenges that lay ahead.

With their tears finally subsiding, Mary gently guided Amy towards the bed, concerned about her best friend’s well-being and the strain she might be putting on herself.

Carefully choosing her words, Mary approached the sensitive topic. "Amy, do you think Ash or Uncle Lucas could have any involvement in this? Or perhaps, do you think they might have ordered it?" She spoke with great care, fully aware of Amy’s brotherly love for Ash.

Amy pursed her lips, suppressing the thoughts that Ash could be involved. Biting the inside of her cheek, she fought against the notion. "Henry shares the same suspicion, but deep down, we both know that Ash wouldn’t harm me in any other way. It’s possible that Uncle Lucas could be involved, but I can’t believe Ash would be a part of it."

Nodding in understanding, Mary sighed, saddened by the fact that Amy’s trust and respect for Lucas Brighton had been betrayed. "You’re right," Mary acknowledged.

Amy’s voice took on a firm tone as she continued, "Plus, I don’t believe it’s the Brightons as a whole. The sabotage was targeted specifically at the parachute in the passenger’s seat, while the others remained intact. It indicates that whoever is responsible is targeting me specifically.

Henry has taken steps to ensure both our properties are conjugal now, so if it were Lucas, he would likely want to ensure Henry will not survive the accident as well." Amy’s voice held a firm conviction as she spoke, her certainty shining through.

Mary’s curiosity led her to inquire further, "Has Henry considered other people who could have done this?" She presumed that due to Henry’s wealth and status, there might be many who would wish to see him fall, but taking it to the extent of endangering their lives seemed extreme.

Amy nodded, confirming Mary’s understanding. "He has. Do you remember Vanessa?" Mary nodded, recalling the name. Amy continued, "Given that the sabotage is clearly aimed at me, we suspect it could be her. She knows Henry’s capabilities and may be confident that the accident won’t be fatal for him, but it could put my life in jeopardy."

Mary closed her eyes and took several deep breaths, attempting to calm herself. At that moment, a surge of protectiveness washed over her. The desire to confront the woman who had attempted to harm her best friend welled up within her, but she knew that patience and a measured response were crucial in this situation.

Mary reassured Amy, determined to alleviate her friend’s burden. "Don’t worry, babe. I have complete faith that Rei will delve deep into this matter and uncover the truth. Anton mentioned his connections and investigative skills, and Uncle Trev will lend his support as well. With their combined efforts, I’m confident that justice will be served, and you will receive the justice you rightfully deserve.

Her words carried a sense of optimism, aiming to lighten the weight that rested upon Amy’s heart. Mary remained steadfast in her belief that they would uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
