Chasing The Vengeful Villainous Heiress-Chapter 127: At the prom...
The atmosphere suddenly turned rigid as the trio tried to understand the situation they had gotten themselves into. First off, the family they were curious about just happened to be in front of them and also had a connection with Mariam, it was wild.
’So, even if we decided to stay away from the problem, the problem still found a way to find us. Really smooth.’ Tiana thought while shaking her head.
Mariam was confused as to why they suddenly looked on guard and uncomfortable after she introduced Stephanie.
’Why? Do they not like her?’ she thought and pursed her lips. ’Why though? Stephanie is so sweet and...’
"Ah, where are my manners?" Tiana said, stepping forward. "Stephanie, right? What a lovely name. Mariam has told us a lot about you."
Breaking the ice just needed a few words and the other two followed,
"Quite indeed." Max added. "She is definitely the kind of beauty you described."
Mariam flushed.
’What are they saying?’
"Pleased to meet you, Stephanie." Valerie stepped forward and stood in front of her. "You look beautiful tonight."
Stephanie stared at Valerie in awe. Her red eyes were truly remarkable and she couldn’t help but blush at her compliment.
"Ah, thank you." She said, averting her eyes. "You look pretty, my lady."
"Haha, let’s leave the kids to go in. We chaperons should find our stand and get out of their hair." Tiana said and they all walked away after waving with nice smiles.
"Geez, Mariam." Stephanie placed her hands on her cheeks feeling her face burn. "What have you been telling your family? They’re so good with their words and they’re all so good-looking. I see why you’re so pretty."
"Haha, it runs in the blood, I guess." Mariam said, trying not to her lightheaded by the compliment she got.
But she felt something was indeed weird with them. After introducing Stephanie, she noticed how they froze up in shock like they heard something they shouldn’t.
’Am I overthinking it?’ she thought. ’But their reaction was too peculiar to ignore.’
"Shall we go in, Mariam?" Stephanie asked, putting her hands on Mariam’s shoulders.
"Ah, yes." She said but then noticed Stephanie’s date was missing. "But where’s Lucas? Shouldn’t he have come with you?"
Stephanie paused for a moment then laughed like nothing was wrong.
"Well, he didn’t come. I didn’t want to waste time waiting for him so I came alone. And look," she poked Mariam’s cheek. "I was able to meet you at the entrance. Isn’t it splendid?"
"Yeah, I guess so." Mariam nodded. She felt a little delighted at this chance. ’I don’t know why he didn’t pick her up but this gives me enough time to spend with Stephanie. I’m so glad.’
Stephanie squinted her eyes and glanced at her guards behind them. She slightly nodded her head, as if giving a signal and then turned to smile at Mariam.
"Say, Mariam, you didn’t tell me you had such a gorgeous sister-in-law." She said.
"I didn’t even know I had a sister-in-law till I got home," Mariam said and chuckled. "She’s a really beautiful and strong person."
"So, who’s more pretty? Me or her?" Stephanie asked and Marian stopped walking.
"If I were to compare with looks and charisma, I’d say sister Valerie." She said, and Stephanie paused in shock.
A little exclamation escaped her lips, "Eh?"
"...but if I were to compare with personality and character, you’re number one, Stephanie." She smiled at her.
Stephanie was still shocked. She was sure Mariam would pick her as number one in everything so how come she wasn’t doing so right now?
Why was she putting that bitch before her?
"Stephanie?" Mariam called, noticing her pause. "Is something wrong?"
"No, nothing. Why? Do I seem out of place to you?" She asked with a cheerful smile that Mariam had to shake her head and say,
"Not at all. You’re the same, as usual." She said.
"Alright, we’ve been out for too long. Let’s go in now."
"You’re right. Let’s go in."
Stephanie silently gritted her teeth. She didn’t like this. She thought she had Mariam wrapped around her fingers but it would seem she had been a little too loose with the leech.
Mariam would do anything for her and listen to everything she said. There was no one that held that much control over her, aside from her brother.
According to her sources, the only one she listened to was her brother and she let it pass because he was the one she had relied on all her life, but what’s this?
Why did it seem like her brother’s wife also had the same leverage over her as her brother?
’You’re supposed to be mine.’ Stephanie thought. ’Even if I don’t look at you, you should always look at me and even if I like someone else, she should like me more. That’s how it’s supposed to go. Who the hell is that woman?’
Mariam felt a strange energy coming from Stephanie but she didn’t turn or ask since Stephanie already said she was fine. She was probably just overthinking again.
Valerie, Max, and Tiana stood in a corner, observing the two as they walked and talked. It was strange. What sort of coincidence was this?
"Well, your father came to this school so it’s not strange that they would send someone from that family here as well." Tiana reasoned with them. "But what are the odds that she became friends with my daughter?"
"Influential and strong people often hang out together," Valerie said. "We can say that they, Romaine who has a powerful business empire, want to only stick with a family that has a similar influence."
"You think that’s going to fill the gaps." Max asked, rubbing his chin in suspicion. He wanted to believe it was a coincidence but this sort of coincidence could be dangerous.
They were already trying to figure out how to stop Romaine from acting out, after discovering they broke their side of the deal and killed Valerie’s parents. So what was this whole, ’my sister is in love with the enemy’s child?’
"We can just be thankful that Mariam already resorted to staying away from her." He said and sighed. "If she can stay away from her, good. Right now, she doesn’t even know how dangerous her crush is."
"Hm, maybe it’s the family that’s dangerous and not her in person." Valerie said. "I mean, the family being evil doesn’t necessarily mean their kids are. Stephanie was certainly still unborn when that happened."
"I would like to think the same but look over there." He pointed at Stephanie who put up a smile in front of Mariam but the moment Mariam looked away to talk to others, her face turned grim in anger.
"Wow, would you look at that?" Tiana folded her arms.
"So the bright pretty girl so just a front to her your sister’s attention. What a greedy little thing." Valerie exclaimed.
"That girl, with eyes like that, she’s definitely dangerous. The Romaines are dangerous." Max declared. "I’m just glad she hasn’t done anything to Mariam."
"And we should keep it that way." Valerie said, her eyes glowing.
"What’s wrong?"
"I wonder if we can catch and interrogate that vixen," Valerie muttered and her eyes turned back to normal. "Well, I know we can’t. It would only stir Romaine into our direction and that is one thing we can’t risk having on our plate right now."
"Thank God I didn’t need to talk you out of that." Max said and Valerie gave him a knowing look with a cunning smile.
"Are you sure you wanted to talk me out of it?" She asked and drew closer to him. "I could’ve sworn you were having the same thoughts as me."
Max, knowing his thoughts had been let out in the open, pursed his lips and darted his eyes. Then, he cleared his throat and swiftly changed the topic.
"It’s already time for the dance." He said. "Chaperons can dance too, so let’s hit the dance floor."
"Gosh, you read too many of my books these days. That’s not how you ask a lady to the dance floor, Mr Knight in shining armor." She poked his chest.
"Well, not in fairytales, but in real life..." He grabbed her hand and pulled her to himself. "...this is how it’s done." He grinned.
Tiana watched them as they strode into the dim dance floor, hand in hand, and shook her head.
"Go ahead. This single old lady will watch Mariam from here." She said and moved her gaze to Mariam who was being surrounded by a ton of guys, hoping to get a dance with her.
But she arrogantly ignored them, throwing her face the other way while they tried to get her attention.
"Why is she so different from me? In my days, I played the guys like basketballs." She exclaimed, swiping her hair back. "But oh well, circumstances made her this way so I can’t blame her."
As soon as she said this, she started coughing. She didn’t think she’d cough so soon after taking the meds but it was getting stronger and hard to suppress.
She took out her handkerchief and coughed into it, and when she had calmed down, she found blood on it. She coughed out blood, but she wasn’t surprised.
She stared at it with no vivid expression, sighed and put it away.
"It seems I’m running out of time." She looked up at them dancing. "I just hope my children can find peace and happiness before I run out of time."
