Chapter 1018: Chapter 1018: The Hope of the Whole Class
Only when Winifred Drew saw Xaviera Evans leave did she enter the office. Even though she was a transfer student, she was treated warmly by everyone due to her status as the daughter of the Drew family. Coupled with her generosity and good looks, she was well-received by all, and it was known abroad that she’d been studying calligraphy for over a decade. Everyone was confident that she would place in the campus calligraphy competition.
Winifred was acquainted with the judges for this competition: Mr. Steel and Mr. Lentz. Hence, her chances of success seemed bright. The head of the Calligraphy Department saw her and warmly greeted, “Winifred.”
Winifred flashed a warm smile in response, then looked around, “‘So many works!”
“Winifred, what brings you here?” the head of the department asked.
With a laugh, Winifred quickly responded, “I’m just here to submit my work. Where’s the section for the Design Department? I can manage it myself. You all are busy enough as is. I wouldn’t want to burden you further.”
The already flustered department head pointed to a location not far off, “Just leave it there.”
Winifred walked over, carrying her own calligraphy work. These submissions were indeed labeled with the names from the Design Department. But the skill exhibited in those works was hardly eye-catching. Not even as good as what she could produce at the age of five. And they dared to present these in a competition?

Calligraphy requires constant practice over a long period of time to develop a unique style. Hence, most people began learning from a very young age and gave up as they grew older. It’s rare to find someone like Winifred who, despite being a teenager, hadn’t given up on their practice.
Those from the Design Department, who spent their childhood learning painting, knew nothing about calligraphy. Class 3, for instance, had only Xaviera participating in the competition. And she couldn’t possibly be very skilled.
Winifred smiled smugly, realizing that she might just be worrying over nothing. Considering that Xaviera had already committed to studying Design and Oil Painting, how could she possibly have any energy left for calligraphy? If Class 3 had a retort, they probably would’ve made it by now.
Despite that, Winifred was curious to see what Xaviera could have possibly submitted. After searching for a while, her index finger suddenly stopped. Her eyes were full of disbelief.
“How…how is this possible?”
The calligraphy before her, whether in terms of composition or brushwork, was indisputably perfect. Even her teacher would’ve had a hard time producing such flawless work. Just who was this big shot at the school who could have possibly produced this? Could someone have accidentally mixed a piece by a master with the student submissions?
“Is it even possible that this piece…?!,” Winifred mumbles, her breathing coming to a standstill. Her shaking fingers slowly turned to the back of the piece and saw the signature.
“Xaviera?? ”
“This is Xaviera’s work? How is that possible?”
Winifred had been studying calligraphy ever since she was five years old and had been doing so for a decade. Still, she would never be able to recreate this kind of finesse in her brushwork, maybe not even in her lifetime.
Based on her knowledge of calligraphy, she was convinced that this piece was the work of a prominent calligraphy master, and undoubtedly, they would be over fifty years old. There was no way that this masterpiece could have been created by a young girl like Xaviera.
So, she must have arranged for someone else to do the work for her!
Caleb Mamet is very wealthy. Xaviera probably paid a large sum to a calligrapher to create a piece for her. In this way, no one would discover the truth.
Winifred smiled; she had been looking for a chance to make the Drew family dislike Xaviera, and now the opportunity was laid right before her.
How could Xaviera have thought of getting someone to ghostwrite her work! Did she think that nobody would ever find out? If you were going to hire someone else, at least make sure they are not as good as you. To employ someone who is clearly much more skillful – how silly!
If Xaviera was shameless enough to do such a thing, then Winifred saw no reason to hold back. Her eyes were full of cold, narrow cunning.
When Winifred left the Calligraphy Department, she ran into Xaviera and the students from Class 3.
“Miss Xaviera, you’re the only hope for our class. Thank you for representing Class 3,” the Class 3 head mustered.
“We know nothing about calligraphy, but having you will at least stop people from looking down at us!”
Xaviera shyly dropped her gaze, “I’ve only learned a bit of calligraphy. If I can prevent Class 3 from losing face, that’s already a success. Winning the competition is too far-fetched.”
The class head bobbed his head, smiling proudly, “It’s all right! Just your participation alone is already a huge achievement!”
Winifred sneered inwardly, watching as Xaviera pretended to be modest, even after having someone else do her work. Perhaps Xaviera was waiting for the competition results to be announced before stunning everyone with her “performance.”
She glared hard at Xaviera before storming off. The class head scrunched his nose, “What’s gotten into her?”
“Yeah, she’s not acting normal,” the others agreed.
As Xaviera observed Winifred’s retreating silhouette, she had a hunch that Winifred was up to no good.
But, Winifred had been studying calligraphy for over a decade, while she was just an amateur who’d practiced for a few months. Why would Winifred be targeting her?
