Chapter 87: 087: Then why are you afraid of me? (2 more)
"I don’t think he’ll come," Lai Yang said, still propping up her chin and hazarding a guess. "He’s so busy, where would he find the spare time? And I feel that for him, a matchmaking banquet is just..." She thought for a moment before finding the right word. "...child’s play."
She’s just finding different ways to call Quan Yu old.
Ning Guiwan remained silent.
Yesterday, after she had angered him at the Chinese-style villa, he hadn’t made a single phone call. He had been in Canada for over a month, and there hadn’t been a single phone call either. It was as if there was nothing special between them.
Ning Guiwan hung Lai Yang’s wool coat in the closet and closed the door. This was for the best; it spared her from having to figure out how to deal with him.
"I’m hungry, let’s go eat," Lai Yang said, getting out of bed and putting on her shoes.
The cruise ship boasted all sorts of lifestyle and entertainment facilities, including more than a dozen restaurants. Lai Yang pulled Ning Guiwan to a Korean barbecue restaurant, where the patient and attentive staff flipped and cut their meat. Lai Yang was thoroughly enjoying her meal when a familiar voice came from nearby.
"Yanyan, Xiaowan..."
With her mouth full of meat, Lai Yang looked up. Her eyes shone when she saw who it was. "Ziyan, how did you get here?"
Zhang Ziyan, however, was watching Ning Guiwan with a playful smile and sensually narrow eyes. "May I sit here?"
Ning Guiwan didn’t answer.
Lai Yang nodded. "Of course! It’s been a long time. What are you doing now?"
"I need to use the restroom," Ning Guiwan said, finding an excuse, and stood up.
Lai Yang didn’t suspect a thing and continued talking to Zhang Ziyan. Zhang Ziyan smiled in response, her eyes following Ning Guiwan as she walked away.
Ning Guiwan didn’t particularly resent Zhang Ziyan for not coming to her aid that night four years ago. People instinctively seek benefit and shun harm. It wasn’t condemnable that the timid Zhang Ziyan had protected herself by not saving her. It’s just that seeing Zhang Ziyan always made her think back to that night. Though Quan Yu had rescued her, amidst her drunkenness and heartache, she had almost gone too far with Quan Yu—the man she should have respected. Perhaps everything today had started from that night, four years ago. She didn’t dare to think about how Quan Yu’s grandmother would see her if she knew about this incident.
A fire seemed to burn in her chest, leaving her breathless. As she passed a bar, she went in for a bottle of alcohol and headed to the public deck.
By mid-December, the temperature had dropped sharply. The sea wind was biting, sharp as a knife. Apart from the occasional sailor hurrying by, Ning Guiwan was alone on the deck.
She leaned against the railing, lazily drinking and watching the receding shoreline lights. The full moon hung overhead, its reflection falling onto the vast sea. As the reflection tossed with the wind and waves, it looked fractured, like a fragile dream.
Feeling the effects of the alcohol, she grew drowsy. In her haze, she seemed to see a figure approaching her.
Ning Guiwan opened her eyes. Seeing the face of the newcomer, she laughed, her cheeks flushed, her eyes watery and captivating.
"Uncle Yu," she said, straightening up and brushing away the hair the wind had blown against her face. Her breath formed a mist in the moonlight, in the ambiguous, soft light. "So, you really did come for the matchmaking?"
Quan Yu looked down at her drunken state with a frown, his tone nearly indifferent. "It seems you still haven’t learned your lesson."
With her hand on the railing, Ning Guiwan laughed, her red lips curved in a brazen, alluring smile, her raised face sharply defined. "I’m a mess, with nothing to my name. What’s there to fear? It’s others who should be avoiding me."
Quan Yu’s hand steadied her waist as he looked at her. "Then why are you afraid of me?"
Every time they touched, her body stiffened. The panic in her eyes, however well hidden, was still traceable.
Ning Guiwan laughed silently, her red lips and white teeth gleaming. "Because you’ll bully me."
Her words sounded like both a joke and a complaint.
Quan Yu stared at her beguilingly petulant face. His hand slid along her waist, moving back and then up, settling into the intimate embrace of a lover. With a slight pull forward, her waist, incredibly soft, was snug against him.
He leaned down to her ear. "And now? Are you still afraid I’ll bully you?"
