Contract Marriage with My Secret Partner in Crime-Chapter 146: Fractured Silence
Kendrick stood there for a moment, his pulse still erratic as if he hadn’t fully come down from whatever just happened.
But the way Zephany avoided his eyes, how the distance between them now felt measured and careful, left a hollow ache in his chest.
He hated this. This growing silence. This invisible wall they both kept trying not to acknowledge.
Trying to ease the tension, he managed a small smile, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. "I think we better go home now."
Zephany nodded almost too quickly. "Yeah... we should," she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Without another word, they turned and walked side by side out of the restaurant. There was no brush of hands, no accidental glance. Just quiet, echoing footsteps across polished floors.
Kendrick reached into his pocket for the keys, glancing at her once, but she was looking ahead—arms loosely at her sides, her pace steady but unreadable.
Outside, the breeze had cooled slightly. The warmth of earlier felt far away now.
He moved ahead and opened the car door for her like he always did. Zephany offered a faint, polite smile and climbed in without protest. The overhead light caught the curve of her cheek, and Kendrick noticed how quiet she looked—still composed, still delicate, but distant in a way that hadn’t been there before.
He shut the door gently, then walked around and slid into the driver’s seat. The car rumbled to life with a low hum, headlights cutting clean through the calm night.
The drive home was silent.
Not awkward, exactly. Just quiet in a way that pressed down on them—an invisible pressure neither of them addressed.
Kendrick kept both hands on the wheel, his jaw tight, his glances at her subtle but concerned.
Zephany sat with her head leaned against the window, watching the city lights blur and streak past. Her mind was clearly somewhere far from this car.
Somewhere tangled in questions neither of them dared to ask.

Across the city, in a quiet control room bathed in a soft blue glow, Cassius leaned forward in his chair, eyes locked on the monitor.
The screen displayed security footage from the restaurant’s parking lot. Kendrick and Zephany had just stepped outside, their figures moving calmly, but the stillness between them was unmistakable.
Sophia stood nearby, arms folded, her usual poise intact, though her gaze was unusually still.
The feed flickered slightly, then stabilized again—showing Kendrick unlocking the car and opening the door for Zephany. She stepped in without hesitation.
The car door closed. A few seconds later, the headlights flared on and the vehicle slowly pulled away from the lot.
Cassius sighed, breaking the silence. "Just when things are finally going well between them," he murmured. "Now this happens. What about the proposal then?" 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Sophia didn’t respond immediately. She watched the red glow of the taillights as the car disappeared into the dark.
Then she turned her head slightly and said, "Seems there’s a lot of obstacles for their happily-ever-after story."
Cassius sat back slowly, the weight of the moment visible in his posture. "They were never going to have it easy."
"No," Sophia agreed with a faint nod. "But now it seems they’re suspicious of each other’s identity."
He looked at her carefully. "You noticed it too?"
"Hard not to," she said, lips curving into the faintest, most humorless smile. "Their injuries healed almost instantly. The way they stared at each other afterward... That wasn’t just surprise. It was recognition."
Cassius exhaled and folded his hands. "Obscura and Eclipse... finally realizing the other might be closer than they ever expected."
"Closer than comfort allows," Sophia said quietly. Her eyes returned to the monitor. "What do you think they’ll do next?"
He was quiet for a long moment, tapping the desk rhythmically with two fingers.
Then he said, "That depends. On whether their feelings are strong enough to override their fears."
Sophia’s expression softened a fraction as the feed faded to black, switching to a different surveillance angle elsewhere in the city. "Or whether fear wins... and they retreat before it’s too late."
Cassius gave a low chuckle, lacking its usual dry amusement. "I guess we’ll find out soon enough."
He paused, then added almost under his breath, "Though I’m a fan of happily-ever-after stories."
Sophia turned to him, one brow slightly raised. She offered a small, ironic smile. "But will they be one?"
Cassius didn’t answer right away. His voice dropped to a near-whisper. "I do really hope they survive."
Sophia’s gaze darkened slightly. "But they’re nearing the deadline."
Cassius looked at her sharply, something resolute sparking in his eyes. "I always get what I want."
There was another pause, then his voice grew colder, more absolute. "If not, I will force them to it. Even if it means they’ll hate me to the core."
Sophia didn’t respond. For a second, she simply stared at him, the weight of his words—and the unnerving certainty in his voice—settling heavy between them. The glint in his eyes wasn’t just determination. It was something else.
And it was frightening.
---
Back at the apartment, the key clicked softly in the lock as Kendrick opened the door.
The moment they stepped inside, Zephany walked forward without saying a word, her pace quick and head slightly lowered. She didn’t look at him. Didn’t speak.
She didn’t even pause by the living room like she usually did.
Instead, she kept walking straight toward her room, her thoughts visibly tangled in knots. Her heartbeat was loud in her own ears. She didn’t know what to say to him. Didn’t even know what she wanted to feel right now.
So she did the only thing that felt safe—she hurriedly opened her door and slipped inside, shutting it quietly behind her.
Kendrick stood by the entrance, watching her disappear down the hallway.
His chest ached.
He clenched his fists at his sides and let out a long, shaky breath, the kind that did nothing to ease the storm inside him.
He didn’t blame her.
But it didn’t make it hurt any less.
