Dawnless Sovereign-Chapter 41: That’s All You See?
Ever since he was assigned to this class, Fu Chengyun had constantly been trying to establish good relations with Mo Ganyun, both for his own sake and for his clan. Even if they were only ordinary friends, at least that would be a connection between the Fu Clan and the Mo Clan.
However, Mo Ganyun paid no heed to his efforts, instead choosing to suck up to Fang Che, a branch lineal descendant of a no-name ninth-tier clan!
Even if he's a prodigy now, what future could he possibly have with his pitiful background? What value could he possibly bring to the table?
One morning, Fu Chengyun was finally unable to contain his dissatisfaction any longer.
As soon as the lesson concluded, Mo Ganyun rose to his feet, rising up from his chair like a miniature mountain before taking a step back.
In a terrible stroke of misfortune, the student sitting directly behind him was the shortest student in the class, and as he also stood up, his eyes were perfectly level with Mo Ganyun's backside.
The student in question sat back down in a disgruntled silence.
Why do you have to step back after you stand up? Your ass is right in my face!
"Let's go get some food, Boss Fang. My treat!" Mo Ganyun offered.
"Sure," Fang Che replied.
The two of them began to make their way out of the classroom together, while Li Changkong looked on with a faint smile.
He slowly packed up his things while thinking back to the reactions displayed by every single student in response to the contents of the lesson.
He would alter his teaching methods depending on the reactions displayed, and this was a habit that he had developed over the past several hundred years.
Education was not a mission, nor was it a job. Instead, it was a career that he had pledged his entire life to.
Right as the two of them were about to exit the classroom, a scornful voice rang out nearby. "Off to have a meal together again, are you? One is an idiot who likes being taken advantage of, while the other is a shameless freeloader who takes joy in exploiting his so-called friend! You two are certainly a match made in heaven!"
It was none other than Fu Chengyun.
Mo Ganyun and Fang Che both stopped at the entrance of the classroom before turning around in unison.
"What? Am I wrong?" Fu Chengyun challenged.
Some of the other students nodded silently in agreement, but most of them were looking upon him with disdain and ridicule.
It was a fully consensual arrangement between the two, so who was he to say anything?
Furthermore, what gave him the right to denounce Mo Ganyun for a fool?
Mo Ganyun appeared a little simple-minded around Fang Che, but that certainly wasn't the case when he was dealing with others, so who knew what his intentions were?
He was a prized prodigy from a super clan, was he really that stupid? Not to mention this was a super clan that had been around for tens of thousands of years.
Hence, while Fu Chengyun was not the only one to think the way that he did, no one else would go out of their way to verbally express their opinion like this.
While no one supported Fu Chengyun's decision to speak up on the matter, all of the students were eager to see how this confrontation was going to unfold.
Are they about to fight?
However, to everyone's surprise, Mo Ganyun didn't seem bothered by Fu Chengyun's derisive remarks.
Both he and Fang Che took a calm glance at Fu Chengyun as if they were looking at a rude child who didn't know any better, and Mo Ganyun asked, "Are you done?"
Mo Ganyun's composure only made Fu Chengyun even more enraged, and he raised his voice slightly as he reiterated, "He's taking advantage of you! How can you be oblivious to that? I'm standing up for you here!"
"Thank you for that," Mo Ganyun replied with a polite nod, then turned to leave.
"That's all you have to say?"
Fu Chengyun was really beginning to grow quite flustered now.
He could clearly sense that Mo Ganyun and Fang Che hadn't taken his words to heart at all. In fact, it felt to him like the two of them didn't even think he was worthy of being listened to.
He had always been quite proud, and never had he been disregarded like this before.
"What do you want me to say?" Mo Ganyun asked with a puzzled expression.
Fu Chengyun was stumped by this question.
I'm showing you Fang Che's true colors! Why is this your reaction? Shouldn't you be grateful for my sincerity, then realize the errors of your past ways and renounce Fang Che to become my friend?
A faint smile appeared on Mo Ganyun's face as he asked, "You thought I would be enlightened by your words, then express my gratitude to you for showing me the light, is that right? From there, we'll become the best of friends, the closest of brothers. Is that the outcome you were expecting?"
Fu Chengyun had no response for this.
That was indeed what he had envisioned, but why was it that Mo Ganyun was describing that scenario with a clear hint of mockery in his voice?
"Don't mess with me," Mo Ganyun chuckled as he patted Fu Chengyun on the shoulder. "Your clan can't afford to mess with our Mo Clan."
He had spoken loudly enough for the entire class to hear, and with that, he departed without sparing Fu Chengyun another glance.
"What do you wanna eat today?"
"My reputation has been tarnished because of you, so I'm in a really bad mood. You better treat me to something good today."
"You can order whatever you want! I have loads of merit points for you to eat!"
Fang Che gave a disgruntled harrumph, and their voices gradually faded into the distance.
Mo Ganyun had departed without offering any explanation, trying to defend himself, or throwing tantrums, leaving everyone to look on with bemused expressions.
After Fang Che declared that he was "in a really bad mood," they could hear a clear hint of anxiety enter Mo Ganyun's voice, and he immediately made an attempt at appeasement with the promise of a lavish meal, something that Fang Che only seemed to have begrudgingly accepted.
Fu Chengyun was completely flabbergasted.
Not only had he not managed to befriend Mo Ganyun, it seemed that they had become enemies instead!
The entire classroom was deathly silent, and even Li Changkong had stopped what he was doing.
He clasped his hands behind his back as he strode over to Fu Chengyun and asked, "You must be confused about why things didn't turn out the way you imagined they would, right?"
"Yes," Fu Chengyun admitted as he lowered his head in a frustrated manner.
"You're also confused about why Mo Ganyun didn't bother to explain or defend himself, right?"
"Yes," Fu Chengyun repeated.
"Do you know why Mo Ganyun treats Fang Che like this every day?"
Fu Chengyun raised his head with a lost expression, eager to be enlightened.
"In your eyes, this is solely a case of Fang Che taking advantage of Mo Ganyun, isn't it?"
"Is that not the case?" Fu Chengyun asked in a perplexed manner.
"Go have lunch," Li Changkong said with a faint smile, then turned to depart.
The four instructors had all witnessed the immense benefits that Mo Ganyun had repeated during his time with Fang Che, but they couldn't reveal this to anyone because Fang Che was the only one capable of providing such benefits.
Hence, the instructors had no right to divulge this information unless Fang Che gave them permission to do so.
The questions that he had just raised to Fu Chengyun were already a hint, one that should be enough to tip off the more observant and thoughtful students in the class to the fact that there was more to Fang Che and Mo Ganyun's relationship than met the eye.
However, Li Changkong couldn't make things any clearer than that.
Fang Che was a blessing from the heavens for all of his classmates, one that Mo Ganyun had already grasped onto. As for everyone else, they all had equal opportunities, so it was up to them to see in Fang Che what Mo Ganyun had seen in him.
Fang Che hadn't kept his abilities a secret, but nor had he openly advertised them to anyone, so it was clear that he had his own considerations. Perhaps he wanted to develop a close circle of allies, or perhaps he had something else in mind.
Perhaps by revealing Fang Che's secret to everyone, he would be able to benefit many students, but it would be at the cost of compromising Fang Che's group, perhaps leading to the demise of Fang Che and Mo Ganyun at some point down the line.
For example, what if someone like Fu Chengyun were to join their group?
This was too severe a consequence for Li Changkong to bear. Just as he had said on the first day, he was only an instructor, not a master.
Li Changkong knew Mo Ganyun only ever displayed this simple-minded side of himself to a very select group of people, including Fang Che.
In reality, he was incredibly intelligent and sensitive, far more than his classmates could imagine, and that was why he hadn't bothered to explain or defend himself against Fu Chengyun's abrasive words.
He didn't want to reveal this blessing to anyone else.
What was he supposed to say? Was he supposed to tell everyone just how much he was benefitting and learning from Fang Che?
He really would be a fool if he did that.
ALl those who were strong had a common trait, which was that they were always eager to learn from those stronger than them. There was no sense of envy or unhealthy competition, it was solely a desire to learn and improve.
In contrast, the weak were more prone to envy. As opposed to striving to improve and reach those above them, they wanted to drag those above them down to their level.
Furthermore, they often had an inexplicable sense of superiority, something along the lines of: "So what if you're better than me now? Everyone dies eventually!"
There were always diamonds in the rough that were destined for great things, it was just a matter of whether those around them could recognize their potential.
Once that potential was recognized, one could try and share in their future glory by befriending them through wealth, resources, or just simple sincerity.
However, most people were unable to see the potential in others, and that was a rather sobering thought for Li Changkong.
He knew that this was why there were so few people like Xue Fuxiao and Duan Xiyang in this world.
One's mindset and foresight were extremely important factors in deciding one's fate, and these were things that no one else could interfere with.

On a side note, Fang Qingyun had received his examination results.
