Days of Dungeon: From Simple Quest to Strange Adventure-Chapter 134: From Arrival To Departure - Part 6
Why would you even get scared facing a dragon...
It was the memory that first flashed in Arezu’s mind—the proud and confident image of the person he admired—even before the fear imprinted in his blood instinctively made his body tremble as he stood facing the Fire Dragon. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
"What’s happening right now..." Arezu said, directing his trembling voice to the person hovering mid-air above while keeping his eyes on the half-beaten Fire Dragon.
"Isn’t it obvious, Mr. Arezu? The burnt hag wants the two of us to fight this dragon." Lynn said, interrupting before the Beast Lord could answer Arezu, earning herself another threatening glare.
Cyra didn’t actually intend to do exactly what Lynn said.
She wanted to test Arezu and Lynn’s fighting capability—to see the strength of someone whose eyes had seen more than a lifetime of battles, someone who had seen enough death to realize how valuable a single life truly was—something even a demi-human who had lived for two hundred years like her hadn’t seen yet.
Her plan was to have the members of the Annual Caravan fight the Fire Dragon, but with Lynn’s audacity pissing her off even more, she might as well grant what Lynn was asking for.
"Show me how strong you really are..." Cyra whispered before activating her divine power.
A pillar of vermillion light rose up from the ground high into mid-air, surrounding Arezu, Lynn, and the Fire Dragon. It quickly expanded, engulfing the entire town square, causing those outside the pillar of light to back away unless they wanted to be disintegrated by her divine light, leaving Arezu and Lynn the only ones to fight the Fire Dragon.
Half-beaten as it was, with its wings disintegrated and unable to fly or attack from mid-air, a Fire Dragon was still a high-level monster. It still bore the Curse of Wrath, visible in its raging eyes—the curse that was the source of the monster’s uncontrollable hatred toward humanity, the hatred that would push it to fight until the very end of its life.
There was no way a pair of iron-rank adventurers could win, much less survive, against a colossal monster spanning a few dozen meters and larger than an average building.
"Please stop this now, Lady Cyra!" Arezu shouted upon seeing the Fire Dragon making its move, sparks igniting on its fangs in preparation for its infamous fire breath, desperate at the thought that he wouldn’t be able to protect Lynn.
"Mr. Arezu!"
—ROOAAARRRR!—
At Lynn’s warning, an explosion of flames burst from the open jaws of the Fire Dragon, engulfing half of the entire town square, followed by its thunderous roar that resounded throughout the town of the Beastkin Nation.
The stone roads melted due to the intense heat, yet not even a single ember of flame broke through the pillar of light sealing the entire town square. And despite the distraction caused by a single fire breath, Lynn and Arezu held their ground.
Lynn had drawn her ancient relic dagger, gripping it with her right hand to amplify the strength of her divine blessing Barrier to protect herself and Arezu as he swiftly retreated to her side upon her warning.
"Find a way to break through the pillar of light, Lynn. I will distract it as long as I can." Arezu said, gripping his halberd-axe with trembling hands as he took his stance, only for Lynn to bluntly reject his suggestion.
"We’re not running away, Mr. Arezu."
"This isn’t the time to be unreasonable—"
—BAMM!—
While they were debating whether to escape or not, the Fire Dragon made its next move. Its tail wiped across the ground, creating a large crater where Lynn and Arezu had stood just moments ago.
Arezu barely managed to dodge the strike while carrying Lynn in his arms. Although they weren’t hit directly, the shockwave of the impact alone sent them stumbling across the ground, and the debris of rock that struck them not only tore his coat and her robe but also wounded them badly, leaving them bleeding.
"There’s no way we could win against that monster." Arezu said as he stood up and covered for Lynn, giving her time to think of a way to get out of the pillar of light. But once again, Lynn refused to escape.
"Are you making fun of me now, Mr. Arezu?"
"I told you, Lynn, stop being unreasonable!"
"Are you saying we can’t win because I’m going to drag you down?!" Lynn shouted in rage as she stood up—not toward Arezu, but toward the thought that she wouldn’t be able to win against a high-level monster on her own.
"That’s not what I mean!"
"Liar!"
—ROOAAARRRR!—
Interrupting their argument, the Fire Dragon attacked with another fire breath.
Lynn raised her left hand to counter with her mystic spell, casting the advanced-level Avalanche to block the burst of explosive flames with towering waves of boulders and rocks.
—BOOMMM!—
The collision of two destructive magical attacks scattered not only flames but molten rocks. Still, the pillar of vermillion light protected the terrified adventurers and soldiers as Lynn shielded herself and Arezu with her amplified Barrier to continue their argument.
"You’re scared, but you’re still going to fight! So why do I have to escape alone?!"
"I will not let that burnt hag take pleasure in watching me run away by myself!"
"And I will punish that monster who dares to look down on me!"
"Tell me, Mr. Arezu—why would you even get scared facing a dragon?!"
It was the same outrageous question.
The same proud and confident image as she stood in front of him, facing the monster he feared.
Even the same ridiculous, insane reasoning that made him faintly laugh.
"Just think of it as an oversized lizard, and you’ve got nothing to fear."
"I never saw a fire-breathing, metal-armored lizard, though." Arezu said as he finally stood beside Lynn, gripping his weapon with steady hands.
"Give me a full minute, and I will show you how to kill an oversized lizard." Lynn said as she gathered her mana to cast her most destructive mystic spell so far.
—ROOAAARRRR!—
