Chapter 239: Someone High Up The Chain Of Command

Brooke didn’t know which came first, her reaching for her phone, or losing the strength in her knee and falling miserably to the ground.

All she did remember, was calling for an ambulance and staying next to Gilbert, crying next to his barely moving body. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel-com

In minutes, the paramedics arrived at the scene, Gilbert was taken away on a stretcher. Brooke tried to go after him, but she was quickly apprehended by the police men who had arrived out of nowhere.

"Let me go! What are you doing? Where are you taking me?!" Brooke raised her voice, as the police men dragged her over to an awaiting car, her hands cuffed tightly.

"You’re coming back to the station with us for questioning!" An officer told her, pushing her towards the car.

Looking over her shoulder, she watched as the officers took her belongings and slid them into bags. "Hey! Leave my things alone! You can’t do this to me!"

But her cries fell on deaf ears, the police officers dragged her past the spectators who had their phones out, taking pictures and videos. An officer roughly forced her into the car and slammed the door hard, nearly hurting her.

As the car’s engine started, Brooke’s protests grew louder! "Let me go! I didn’t do anything! I’m the one who called for the ambulance!"

The officer stole a glance at her from the front seat, "That’s enough out of you! I already told you, you’re going to the station for questioning! Stop panicking ma’am or we will assume you’re deliberately obstructing our investigation!"

Brooke’s eyes widened, "Is this how someone is taken in for questioning?!" She asked, but the officers in front ignored her and continued driving to the station.

At the station, Brooke was placed in a holding cell and told to wait until an officer came in for the interrogation. When she asked to make a phone call, they refused her the right and warned her against causing anymore problems.

She was then left alone for about twenty minutes, before two officers, a man and a woman came into the cell and escorted her to a room where she would be interrogated.

"Can’t you take these cuffs off me? I haven’t been proven of any crime, isn’t it illegal to do this?" Her irritated voice interrogated.

The woman answered, "Until we get the report from the hospital about the victim’s condition, we won’t know the gravity of your crime."

Brooke frowned, the cuffs were uncomfortable and had started to hurt her wrists. "But I didn’t do anything-" her words were cut off when everybody at the station directed their stares in one direction.

"Hey, isn’t that..."

"What is he doing here?!"

"He’s more handsome in person!"

Brooke shifted her gaze towards the cause of all the commotion, her heart pounding with hope that Thane had heard the news and come rushing to her aid.

However, her insides tightened uncomfortably and a cold shiver ran down her spine as her eyes fell on the one human she detested the most.

The officers halted to greet him, "Mr Halton, what brings you to the station?" The male officer, in his late thirties asked.

Ethan completely ignored him and reached out in Brooke’s direction, however her body pulled back, violently shaking from having him near her! Brooke’s chest pounded, her arms drenched in sweat, and her breathing fast and irregular.

What was Ethan doing here?

How did he find her?

Where was Thane?

Her mind wandered into a million places all at once. Because of the time she had spent with Thane, shielded from Ethan and all the pain that came from her old life, she had forgotten that hate wasn’t the only thing she felt for Ethan.

"Forgive her Mr Halton! This criminal was just about to go in for questioning." The female officer, a bit older than her colleague explained.

Ethan stared at his suspended hand and cracked a small smile, "I apologize, I must’ve startled the poor thing." He said, his focused gaze never once leaving Brooke’s trembling body.

Thankfully, the police captain rushed out of his office on hearing of Ethan’s arrival and went out to receive him. "Mr Halton, please come this way." He said, gesturing Ethan towards his office.

Reluctantly, Ethan averted his eyes from Brooke, "Lead the way." He said, then followed the captain.

Once they were gone, the officers resumed what they were doing. "Who told you to stop?! Get moving!" The female officer pushed her forward, nearly tripping Brooke over due to how on edge she was.

Obediently, Brooke went with them, sticking so close, using their bodies to shield hers. Both officers noticed the sudden change in her behavior, and noted it odd.

However, they were given strict orders to apprehend her, and they weren’t planning on going against those orders.

Meanwhile, inside the office, Ethan didn’t bother to waste a moment to take a seat, he immediately gave an order to the captain, "Have her released, she’s with me."

The captain blinked twice, "Mr Halton? I don’t follow-"

"That woman outside!" He yelled, his fingers balled into tight fists. "Have them uncuff her and sent to my car! That’s an order!"

Ethan still hadn’t calmed down from everything that had happened. He had just left Cassie when he coincidentally stumbled upon a video of Brooke being arrested. Immediately, he dropped everything he was doing and drove towards the station, speeding past red lights and nearly getting into four accidents!

To himself, he couldn’t believe his luck. ’Finally! I’ve finally found her! My wife is finally back to me!’ he thought, however the captain of the police department delivered him disappointing news.

"My apologies, but I’m afraid that I cannot release that woman."

Ethan glared, "Did you not hear me? Or do I have to remind you just who it was that helped you land this position." After his arrest, Ethan used his resources to get the last police captain fired and placed this man in his place.

That way, he would have the biggest sway over the district police.

However...

Bowing his head, the officer explained, "The order to have her arrested came from someone high up the chain of command. As it stands now, there is no one with enough power to call back this arrest."
