Chapter 38 - Size Isn't Everything, You Know?

"Elijah...?" Katherine muttered as he walked off the bus.

[Side Quest: "Bus Protection."]

[Clear Condition: Protect the Bus from the looters.]

[Reward: 20 Bus Ticket Coupons.]

'Bus drivers and buses were worked into the Apocalypse while planes were brought down... I guess buses allow exploration of the nearby area. When there are Dungeons and Main Quest Locations that we need to get to, buses are much more useful.' Elijah thought as he let his back rest against the front of the bus. 'Lucky for him, I guess. It was cleaned somehow, but there remain bloodstains. The people inside of the bus needed to leave or protect it during the Tutorial Quest. I guess they failed, and were attacked by creatures similar to Corrupted Harpies, since the windows and ceiling are fucked.'

"We should go help." Katherine said as she stood up.

"You think?" Marianne scratched her cheek. "I think he'll be alright."

"But there are six people coming towards us..."

"So?" Marianne shrugged. "He's a guy, he'll figure it out."

"..."

"You can be pretty cold-hearted at times, huh?" Léa muttered.

"Yeah, it's nice to meet you too."

Léa turned back to face the front end of the bus.

'She has a point though. Six people are coming towards us...'

They could be seen wielding blades and bats, smashing windows on parked cars left and right in their way.

'Six people are approaching, but I'm not scared at all. The fact that he's standing between them and I changes everything.' Her eyes narrowed as she focused on the approaching looters. 'Five guys and a girl... If I wasn't with him, would I be with them? It's clear that everything is about to become a shit show. With Katherine having a Class of the Epic Grade, Marianne one of the Legendary Grade, and Elijah... Well, who knows what he has... There's no doubt in my mind that the three of them are some of the strongest in the world right now. I debated whether or not I should take the bus earlier, thinking that my chance to get away from them was slipping, but that's not the case at all. It's my chance to join them that is slipping. With Marianne having obtained a Class, a Legendary one at that, I'm clearly the only one lacking, the one being left behind. I need to join them. If I want to adapt to this world, and have an actual place in the new world that is to come!' Her gaze moved towards Elijah's back. He had started walking towards the approaching looters. 'If I follow that man, then my place in the world will... Even if it means losing something, what I stand to gain is much more...'

Another window was smashed.

"What are you walking towards us for?"

"Trying to act all tough for the girls?"

"Hahahaha!" The only girl in the group laughed. "He's trying to be a hero! I hate guys like that."

"Oh, come on. Don't say that, he looks like such a nice guy."

Elijah scratched his head as he walked.

"I expected more people to be shitting themselves, but you six seem to be doing fine."

"Huh?"

"What the fuck is he talking about?"

"Do you even know who we are?"

"We've killed, alright? We're not like the rest of you."

"Oh, yeah? I was planning on giving you some advice, but you seem like the hard-headed kind..." Elijah's lips curled upwards. "Show me what you can do then."

"Just give us everything you have..." The closest one to Elijah said, slapping his bat against his own palm repeatedly. "If you don't want to get your skull smashed in."

It didn't take long before Elijah was surrounded.

He clenched his fists while standing completely straight, feeling shivers run up and down his spine.

'I can beat them up without getting into any trouble later on. No cops, no bullshit. This is so fucking good-'

"Elijah!" Katherine shouted, peeking through one of the bus' broken windows. "Is everything alright?"

"You better listen to your girl, man."

"That's right. You wouldn't want her to see any blood, would you?"

Elijah scratched his head.

"Yeah, you're right."

"Then give us everything you have!"

"That Cloak looks like an Item!"

"He even has a Sword! And one of those things where you keep Swords in... Wait, could this guy be-"

They all fell silent as Elijah rested a hand against his throat, preparing for the sting.

"Get on your knees."

He ordered, using the Absolute Authority Skill.

The six looters' knees hit the ground so fast it was debatable whether they had started moving upon hearing the order or before even that.

"What the fuck...?"

"Why is my body...?!"

"What did you do asshole?!"

"The moment that I can move, I'll smash your skull in!"

"Will you shut up?! We can't make threats now!"

"That's right, you can't." Elijah nodded.

The next second, a great boom resonated from behind him.

'What the fuck was that?'

'An explosion?'

'Magic?'

'Did the others do something? Those on the bus??'

It was only once the dust settled behind Elijah that they got answers to their questions.

You got here faster than I expected,'

"W-What the...?!"

'Chief.'

Behind Elijah stood an enormous creature. Horrible and hideous, it stood with its mouth wide open, strings of saliva going down its mouth. It only took a glance to notice that the creature was a monstrosity made from the merging of multiple other creatures.

"Stand up."

The six stood up faster than they thought their bodies were even capable of.

"How do I punish the six of you?" Elijah muttered to himself. "Taking everything you have is a given. Hm..." He thought for a moment. "Aha. I got it."

Elijah stepped back until he was standing alongside the Chimera Monster, Chief.

"One punch for each one of you." Elijah smiled. "You get to choose who hits you."

He tapped the Chimera's arm.

"Me or Chief?"

After panicking for a bit, the six made their choice.

And it was the wrong choice.

"I'm hurt." Elijah chuckled, rotating his arms as if to warm up. "Size isn't everything, you know?"

Meanwhile, Léa was standing on the bus, right behind Marianne and Katherine.

'Once he comes back...'

Her hand stroked her upper back nervously.

'I'm getting the tattoo.'
