Chapter 122: The Sound of Pain

The chase continued for an hour until Alaric had taken down all the Lycans and now stood face to face with the Lycan King. Alaric’s eyes blazed bloodshot red, his fangs were elongated, and blood dripped from them as well as from his claws.

"If you know what’s good for you, hand over my son," Alaric warned, closing the distance between himself and Darius.

Lycan King Darius didn’t flinch. Instead, he let out a maniacal laugh.

"You’ll have to kill me for that," he replied, and his expression shifted suddenly into one of pure menace.

"Well then." Alaric didn’t hesitate to make his advances.

"One more step and I’ll gouge the child’s heart out. He might not die, but the pain will be inevitable—even for him."

Alaric paused, a low growl rumbling from his chest as he glared at the Lycan King. "Don’t you dare."

"Try me."

Darius stepped back, glaring at Alaric with every intent to flee. But unknown to him, Luke was already behind him. Before Darius could even sense his presence, Luke had snatched little Riven from his arms and delivered a blow that sent Darius flying. Darius crashed against a tree, the sound of cracking bones echoing through the forest. Yet, being a Lycan, he healed swiftly and was back on his feet in an instant.

Luke stood beside Alaric, holding little Riven protectively in his arms. Surprisingly, the child stared silently at him without a single sound, blinking his big, clear eyes. His lips even curved into a small smile, unaware of the danger he’d just been in. He made tiny, innocent sounds that seemed to lighten the heavy air surrounding Alaric as he carefully took his son from Luke’s arms.

"My son," Alaric whispered, his voice thick with emotion. A rush of feelings choked him. Then he turned his gaze toward Darius, rage boiling within him like an unquenchable fire. He knew he wouldn’t feel at peace until the Lycan King’s head was separated from his body.

The Lycan King charged toward them again, but Luke anticipated his move and launched himself forward. They collided in the middle. Luke grabbed Darius by the throat, but the old man easily slipped out of his grip. Darius seized Luke’s arm, attempting to snap it, but Luke twisted away with practiced speed and kicked him, sending him staggering backward a few steps. The old man chuckled, glaring at Luke.

"You’ve grown up, boy. But it’ll take more than this to bring me down." With that, the Lycan King vanished from view, only to reappear behind Luke and snap his neck. Although it wasn’t fatal, it rendered Luke unconscious for a brief moment. Darius then turned to Alaric.

"He’s killable..." he said, glancing at Luke as he slowly dug his claws into Luke’s chest. The only way to kill a shifter or vampire was to rip out their heart, and Darius could do it in a blink. "Now be a good boy and give me the little one."

Alaric hadn’t found himself caught between such impossible choices in a long time. On one hand was his son. On the other was Luke’s life. Both were equally important. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

"I’m getting impatient. So if you could just hurry up..." Darius hissed, his annoyance seeping into every word.

Still, Alaric didn’t move for a while which made Darius dig in his clawas deeper. Instead, a dangerous smirk curved his lips as he stared at the Lycan King. "See you in hell."

And the moment those words left Alaric’s mouth, Luke’s eyes snapped open. In one swift motion, he drove his hand into Darius’s chest and tore out his heart. He shoved the old man away and stood up, still holding the beating organ in his hand.

"This is for my parents and my sister." His voice was ice as he crushed the heart to pulp. In the next instant, his claws sliced across Darius’s throat, and he beheaded him right then and there.

Silence hung thick in the air for a moment before Alaric stepped closer to Luke. "Are you okay?"

Luke nodded. "I’ve wanted to do that for a long time." Though his eyes seemed empty, there was also relief in them—a quiet knowledge that the danger hovering over them had finally been eliminated.

Alaric placed a reassuring hand on Luke’s shoulder, offering silent comfort. But before the moment could linger, little Ruven interrupted them with a soft giggle. Both men turned to the child, gazing at him with immense affection. After a brief pause, they decided it was time to head back.

Unbeknownst to them, the true game had only just begun. The end of the Lycan King was merely the beginning of another tremor that no one could have foreseen—or even imagined.

When Alaric and Luke returned to where they had left the others, the place was eerily quiet. Corpses lay scattered on the ground, and crimson was now the dominant color staining the earth. They quickly spotted their companions and hurried toward them.

It wasn’t until they drew closer that they saw someone lying motionless on the ground. It was Finn—and the most horrifying sight was the gaping, empty hole in his chest. Alaric froze while Luke lunged forward.

"What the hell happened?" Luke’s voice was colder than ice as he dropped to the ground beside Finn’s lifeless body.

No one spoke. Zeke sat slumped on the ground, one leg folded beneath him, his face lowered. If one looked closely, tears shimmered in his eyes. Seth, meanwhile, knelt on the opposite side of Finn, staring blankly at the corpse. Nyx, covered in several bruises, was sitting at Finn’s head, cradling it gently in her lap. As for Zander and Ravenna, they were nowhere to be seen.

"What the hell happened here?" This time, it was Alaric who demanded an answer.

"Liam happened," Zeke said hoarsely. "He came out of nowhere, knocked Ravenna unconscious, and when Finn tried to stop him, the two witches intervened. Then... Liam ripped... his heart out." His voice broke as he struggled to finish the sentence.

Alaric said nothing, his eyes locked on his brother’s lifeless form. Pain crashed over him like a tidal wave, and a single tear slipped down his cheek. He was still trying to process the scene when Seth spoke up quietly.

"They took Ravenna... and Zander went after them."
