"It has been four months, and it's weird that there's not a single demon rift. Ever since the last raid, we also didn't get any information related to the next demon we are going to face," Aston poured himself a glass of whiskey after he cleared two rifts in a single day. "What about you? Did you get anything?" he looked at Zachary, staring at his watch nervously.

"Nothing," Zachary answered as he sighed with his eyes closed.

"If you're that worried, go and meet her," Aston realized what made Zachary look so nervous. "It's not too late, and you can watch her from the distance," he suggested.

Zachary was nervous because Melissa was meeting with the opposing party to negotiate. He wanted to escort her there since it was dangerous, but Melissa rejected him because she wanted to do it alone. She believed they wouldn't hurt her because she didn't do anything wrong and they had no reason to hurt her.

Melissa was sitting at the small dining table, and she could see all the people who had joined the opposition were suffering as well. They didn't have any food or drink, and she thought they would take some for themselves before they sabotaged the crops, farms, and clean water.

"Why are you doing this?" Melissa asked the man who appeared to be the leader of the party, Erickson.

"To show our dissatisfaction, Vice-President. We do this to tell those people that if they don't step down from their position, we all will die together and it will be their fault," Erickson answered with his dried lips.

"Do you think that will fix the problem that you caused? You're killing innocent people!" Melissa screamed at Erickson with tears glimmering in her eyes.

"Yes, and that will be their fault," Erickson answered who was still taken aback when Melissa yelled at him.

"Is that all you want? Then I'll step down from my position as soon as I leave this place. I'm alone should be enough, right?" Melissa asked.

"It's quite the opposite. We don't want you to step down because you're the only one who cares for us. You have shown us enough how you sacrificed everything that you have for the people. You're the only one that befits to rule this nation, Miss Vice-President," Erickson answered. "Those bastards have decided to abandon the people and only care about their own people," he added.

"It's because I'm the one who asked them to do that. They have families to take care of because even though they're government officials who serve the people, their families aren't obligated to sacrifice themselves for the people. They're a part of the people of this nation, and they're important to them," Melissa pointed out. "If you think they abandoned the people, then it's because of me. I'm the one who told them to do that," she added.

"That's exactly why we respect you, Miss Vice-President. You're not only sacrificing yourself, but you care about everyone no matter who they are. Yes, you might be the one who is responsible for that, but those bastards didn't hesitate to abandon the people which makes them at fault as well," Erickson argued.

Melissa had predicted the outcome of the conversation and realized that Elestria had gotten involved with the opposing party indirectly. She was curious how Elestria managed to do that and the opposing party had no idea everything they did was under Elestria's scheme.

"How long are you going to make the people suffer?" Melissa asked since she already knew she couldn't talk it out with Erickson.

"As long as those bastard still sitting in their current position. If we have to die, then we will die. The nation without its people is nonexistent, and it's them to decide to kill us all or save all of us," Erickson answered without hesitation.

"If you truly respect me as you said earlier, then give me a month as I will convey your words to them. I want us to have a common ground where we can agree," Melissa used her last effort to negotiate with Erickson.

"There's no such a thing as a common ground with those bastards, Miss Vice-President. It's either we die, or you will be our savior," Erickson stated with a serious and determined expression.

Melissa closed her eyes to think for a moment because she didn't want to get rid of the people who were amazing at running the nation. They were the best of the best, and they had sacrificed a lot for the people and yet in the end they were portrayed as evil. History would see them as failures, the villains of the people, and she didn't want that.

She knew that Erickson didn't care about all that because they were the people who were betrayed by them. She was in a dilemma and didn't know what to choose as neither option would dirty her hands.

"One week is all you have, Miss Vice-President. The future of this nation is in your hands whether you fall with it or make it rise again," Erickson pointed out.

Melissa shed a tear, making Erickson feel uncomfortable, but he was determined since his voice was equal to millions of the voices of the people.

"As long as the people can live comfortably again, I'll try to make them understand. But in exchange, I want you to promise me that this mess and chaos will stop from now on," Melissa said with a serious expression, staring into Erickson's eyes.

"We promise, and the moment you sit on the highest seat, we will accept all the punishment for threatening millions of lives," Erickson nodded his head and his eyes showed Melissa that he was ready to die for his sins.

Melissa left and went straight to the House of Representatives building to convey Erickson's wish.

Melissa conveyed the message and everyone believed her because of her genuine expression of guilt. She was holding back her tears as she told them that they had to step down from their position. It was painful for her and they could hear it in her voice since she had always been truthful in her words.

Evan stood up and his eyes were enough to say that he agreed with the demand.

"I will step down from my position and I will make a public apology," Evan said without hesitation. "It's proof of my lack of ability to protect this nation. I apologize for being a useless leader and bringing this nation to this situation," he added as he looked at everyone in the auditorium.

One by one all the government officials gave a piece of their words to each other, apologizing for their incapability. Melissa was sitting there, sobbing and covering her face because she couldn't stop the burst of emotion inside her.

"Vice-President Melissa," Evan called. "We will leave the future of this nation in your hands. We believe that you can do better than any of us combined," he gently smiled at Melissa who kept hiding her face.

Everyone encouraged and comforted her because they knew even though they lost everything, Melissa took the punch in the face. They promised her that they would help her when she needed it because they knew how hard and burdensome it was to deal with the whole nation on her own.

"Broken, and yet inseparable. She has gained the hearts of everyone in Verdentia," Mykel said as he watched from the side, leaning against the wall with Zachary.

Zachary was shocked when he met Mykel on his way to the auditorium and he was brought into the room unnoticed. He realized Mykel had cast a spell that made them invisible, and he witnessed the lowest moment in Melissa's life.

"She's an outstanding person, and she should receive the greatest reward once this is over," Mykel said.

"What do you mean?" Zachary looked at Mykel with his eyebrows furrowed.

Mykel didn't answer and kept watching Melissa being hugged by the Senate.

Melissa was left alone because they knew she needed alone time after what happened. That was when Mykel showed himself and brought Zachary with him to her seat. At first, Melissa was shocked, but she immediately approached Zachary and hugged him because she needed someone to comfort her.

"Melissa," Mykel said with his arms crossed and stared at her.

Melissa slowly lifted her head and looked at Mykel with her red swollen eyes.

"I'll help you protect your nation from Elestria's influence," Mykel said without showing any expression. "No matter how good you are, there will always be people who hate you. Nobody is perfect as your perfectness can be imperfect for some. But you, you have proved yourself that you're a perfect figure for Verdentia. So, bring this nation as high as you can and you don't have to worry about anything," he added.

Both Melissa and Zachary were dumbfounded when Mykel, the most cunning person they knew suddenly wanted to help them. They were thrilled when they heard the greatest compliment from him and confused at the same time, but they didn't buy it because Mykel wouldn't do anything for free.

"Why? Why are you helping us?" Melissa asked before Mykel could leave the room.

"Because you deserve it. Also, congratulations, Miss President," Mykel answered with a gentle smile and then left the room. Find more adventures on novelbuddy
