Diary of a Criminal Investigator-Chapter 309: Key Suspect Interrogation
Zhang Hui is in a good mindset right now, not rushing. Since Wang Huidong has already been captured, what’s left is the slow work of attrition.
"Let’s talk about Zhou Yang’s case first."
"Who is Zhou Yang?"
"The one you pushed into the Bailan River from the rooftop at Haizhou International Apartments."
"Oh... you’re talking about that one from a few days ago."
Wang Huidong didn’t mean to hide anything and started speaking on his own.
"I didn’t know him, just killed him offhand."
"You followed him from the Half Past Eight Supermarket next to the apartments, right?"
Wang Huidong nodded: "Give me two cigarettes."
Zhang Hui didn’t mind Wang Huidong’s tone; at this critical moment of confession, such a small request would certainly be met.
Zhang Hui personally lit one for him: "Thanks."
Wang Huidong was quite polite, took a few puffs, and continued his confession through the smoke: "Actually, I hadn’t planned to kill him."
"My cigarettes were running out that day, and I planned to go to the supermarket to buy some. Met his parents giving him money."
"I tell you, that guy was no good either. I watched the whole thing from the side; before his parents gave him money, he talked a bit; after getting the money, he turned and left."
"His name is Zhou Yang?"
Zhang Hui nodded in agreement: "He is Zhou Yang, indeed like you said: lazy, relying on his parents, has no skills, not a good person."
"You were after his money?"
"Yeah, I prefer using cash. When I’m out of money, I just get some."
"I followed Zhou Yang back to the apartment, but there were people around, so I couldn’t make a move."
"I went over the next morning, pretended to be a neighbor, knocked on the door, and used ether to knock him out."
"A neighbor? He just opened the door?"
"I had stayed at the youth hostel in that apartment before, all young people, nobody knows each other. Be nice; they’ll open the door."
"Why not go in the evening?"
"Too many people at night. In the morning, everyone’s sleeping in, so it’s safest."
"How did you get him to the rooftop?"
"Just took the elevator straight up to the top floor."
"Didn’t you run into anyone along the way?"
"I did, like two or three people."
"Weren’t you afraid of being discovered?"
"Afraid of what? I was supporting him. If anyone asked, I’d say he’s drunk. Besides, no one asked. Everyone just plays with their phones in the elevator; who’s going to ask?"
"How did you throw him off the rooftop?"
"Just dragged him out of the elevator and threw him off the edge."
Wang Huidong was still puzzled: "How did you guys find out?"
"I was wearing gloves at the time. Later, when I left, I saw there were drag marks on the rooftop, wiped all those off."
"I did a similar thing when I was in Binzhou; later, I saw on the news there was no murder case; it was reported as a drowning."
Zhang Hui became energized, not going into detail about Wang Huidong’s question: "You’ve done a case in Haizhou, Qinzhou, and Binzhou?"
"Oh, that’s nothing. I’ve done many cases. A couple of years ago, I went on a road trip; when I ran out of money, I’d just get some."
"A road trip?"
"Yeah, road trip. Traveled all over the country. Finished most of the south these past two years. Came to Haizhou recently; planning to travel the north next."
"Can I have another cigarette?"
"No problem."
"So, when you’re out of money, you just get some. What do you mean?"
"Nothing much. When I’m out of money, I just watch outside a bank for someone withdrawing money, then follow and kill them, take the money, and that’s it."
"Stake out a bank? I haven’t heard of any similar cases recently."
"Haha, I’m pretty discreet. Always make it look like a natural death, mostly jump off a building or into a river."
"See that small bottle in my pocket?"
Zhang Hui nodded, inside is ether, it can spray, that’s probably what Wang Huidong used to knock out Zhou Yang.
"It’s amazing; just a few sprays and they’re out, but not completely unconscious. I used to be a doctor; this dosage, your forensic doctors won’t notice when they check."
"All the people I killed were done this way, accidental death, no case."
In the monitoring room next door, Qin Yong, Ren Qiang, and others were watching the monitor with bated breath.
"Captain Qin... what he said... is it real?"
The cases Wang Huidong confessed to were too shocking. If what he said is true, there’s much more to come.
"He directly confessed to Zhou Yang’s case, so no need to lie."
"But, why is Wang Huidong confessing voluntarily?"
Qin Yong was perplexed as to why Wang Huidong chose to confess.
Understandably, if he didn’t confess, no one would know what he had done.
After all, there’s a difference between killing one person and ten.
The sentencing could be different too.
Is Wang Huidong trying to get himself killed?
So, if he’s confessing, there must be a reason forcing him to do this.
Where lies the reason?
Qin Yong pondered for a moment, then suddenly looked at Ren Qiang.
"Where’s Wang Huidong’s car?"
"Already towed back to the team, in the back yard, I think."
"Searched it yet?"
"He got arrested; the car, we didn’t have time to..."
Hmm?
Ren Qiang suddenly thought of something too.
"Captain Qin, you mean in his car..."
Qin Yong nodded: "When Zhou Yang went missing, his phone, ID, those weren’t found."
"Were they washed away by the river, or are they in Wang Huidong’s possession?"
"I’ll send someone... no, I’ll go myself, I’ll check the vehicle now."
"I’ll join you."
Ten minutes later.
The rear yard of the Criminal Investigation Team.
Wang Huidong’s car had just been released from the tow truck.
"Search!"
Three detectives from the Second Action Group, wearing gloves, began to search the vehicle.
But it didn’t take long to search.
One detective opened the trunk and saw a cardboard box with about a dozen phones inside.
"Chief, over here!"
Ren Qiang and Qin Yong went over, seeing the dozen phones inside, their faces turned extremely grim.
"Get the tech department over, see if they can find the owners of these phones."
The Tech Investigation Unit at Haizhou’s City Public Security Bureau doesn’t belong to the Criminal Investigation Team, it’s a separate entity.
Not many people, and the technology... honestly, not great.
Otherwise, for recovering phone data, they wouldn’t need to go to the Technical Identification Center, to find outside help.
Zhang Hui’s interrogation continued, with Wang Huidong intermittently talking about three cases.
The main one being the Qinzhou case.
"Didn’t do well with the Qinzhou case, the woman was too beautiful. Before throwing her in the river, I couldn’t hold myself; after doing her, then dumped her. I thought you’d found something from the body."
Zhang Hui secretly shook his head.
