District 42-Chapter 358: The birth of a district
Two youths were sitting on the ruins of what was once a kingdom. They couldn’t measure when it crumbled down, nor say with certainty why they decided to destroy it, but the fact was that even the castle was reduced to nothing but wreckage.
It was a sad and happy sight. It would just depend on the person’s perspective...
"Hey, Leif. Do you think that it is sad?" Wayland asked, looking at the youth beside him. Leif was corpulent and had blond hair so light that nearly seemed dyed in white. He had a serious face nearly all the time.
Wayland didn’t like to look at his eyes. Whenever he did it, he thought that Leif was looking at something that was... wrong.
He had the eyes of a judge. His gaze upon something only meant that it could be fixed.
It was different from the visionary eyes of the emperor. Leif didn’t want an empire, nor advancement, nor anything like that.
The only thing that he was concerned about was in finding mistakes and fixing mistakes. For him, the world wasn’t any good as it was by then.
"What did you ask?" He subtly got startled and shifted his gaze to Wayland, who was staring at him and waiting for a response.
"Tch. When you are like this, you always forget to pay attention to people who are around you..." Wayland pouted, hitting him with his slender arms, but that were stronger at that time than in the future. After all, he needed to fight every single day against enemies.
"I am sorry." Leif truthfully apologized but did not show any trace of regret on his face. Anyway, it was not like he was the type to express his feelings all the time.
"I asked if you feel sad when looking at these ruins," Wayland said again, although it was a hassle.
"Sad? ..." He pondered for a while as if it was the most difficult question to answer. "I feel uncomfortable because it’s a mess, but I am not particularly sad. I am not happy either, because, as I said, it’s uncomfortable. How about you?"
"Geez... You are such a nonchalant guy. Even though you are a so nice friend..."
"Thank you." He smiled faintly. Maybe smiling was the only thing that he remembered to do.
"Well, about me... I think that I am sad. If you look closely at the past, things weren’t perfect, but the empire was prosperous. There were no wars, the conflicts were always passive, there weren’t major problems with food and other resources, and the poverty of certain parts of the continents decreased a lot. There were numerous problems, but... it wasn’t a mess. Also, the Emperor was a reasonable person."
Leif looked confused at Wayland. He didn’t understand the point.
"What has it to do with this crumbled kingdom? Are you saying that it wouldn’t get destroyed if it was in the empire?"
"No, that’s not what I meant. W-Well, in truth, it wouldn’t have happened in the empire. Anyway, that’s not the point here. Don’t you know about the history of this place?"
Leif shook his head.
"Well, you don’t seem to be a cultured man, huh? This place was called Kingdom Indigo. They were said to be the strongest kingdom of the continent and, during the war, the strongest of the world. King Baldur was the one leading Indigo to glory. We are in the ruins of his great kingdom of yore."
Leif nodded his head slowly, turning his head to look at the place where history was being made in the past. Where the greatest of the greatest kings was born.
"Hey, Wayland..."
"What’s it?"
"Can we begin to do history starting now? What do you think about it? Fix what deserves to be fixed." His eyes were aloof while he said it. It was more a prediction than anything else.
Wayland thought about that matter for a while.
"Well, we can claim these lands and raise another district. But we will need to involve ourselves in several battles in order to conquer these lands."
"That’s okay for me," Leif affirmed. "I am willing to take this risk. I think that we weren’t born in this world to fight on the frontlines for other people who want to raise other districts. We shall do it ourselves."
Wayland nodded.
"Ok. How can we start?" He asked.
"Firstly, we need to find something to control people. We are living in anarchic times. Everyone is fighting for their own ideals. Unfortunately, we will need to force our ideals into them. There is no way to convince someone about something that they don’t believe, nor want to cooperate, though. So we need to be more assertive."
The slim man looked at him in confusion, but soon Leif explained.
"You know how to control Indigo Energy better than anyone. I have envisioned every single square centimeter of this new district and how to administrate it. Together, we can raise the ideal society and start everything again. We don’t need the world, nor the continent, nor a country. Just our single district, that would work just like Baldur wanted the whole world to work."
"You want to create some sort of Valhalla on earth, basically?"
Leif smiled.
"Exactly. Valhalla."
"And what will be the name?"
He got silent for a while, but then asked Wayland:
"What is the answer for all things?"
"42?"
Leif nodded.
"Hmm, a number, then... It doesn’t sound bad. Not at all. Let’s do it, then."
Wayland and Leif stood from the wreckage and walked together through the lands that they would earn in the future.
"You know, I think I can do this," Wayland commented. "Just give me a computer and time. I will surely do the perfect creation!"
"Perfect? Do you believe in perfection?"
"Well, our society must be nothing but perfect. That’s what Baldur envisioned before. Perfection. I will create a divine artifact in this ordinary world, believe me."
