Divine Heritage: Only I Can Judge The gods-Chapter 100: Ghost
’A ghost?’
A couple of years ago someone saying they saw a ghost would cause a wave of laughter, but with the upsurge of apocalypse beasts, ’ghost’ has become a far more concerning word.
’Could it be the beast that damaged the wall?"
Ark quickly got to his feet and rushed forward in the direction most people seemed to be avoiding. While hurriedly putting on his shirt, he circled the hall and checked, but it was empty.
There was nothing in sight save for a dark empty hallway. He took a moment to observe his surroundings, there were no scratch marks or even any single strange thing about the place.
Drip!
A drop of water fell from the leaking ceiling and exploded against the ground.
Ark immediately turned to face the direction of the sound, and as he did, he saw something flash past his vision.
But once he turned back, again all that met him was an empty hallway, leaving behind a rather eerie atmosphere.
"Was it a bird?"
Ark faced the glass panels at the side of the halls, watching as the rain washed over the windows in continuous streams.
The chances of a bird flying through that storm were far too low.
He let out a sigh.
’It’s best if I talk to the woman.’
Whatever was here was long gone and waiting here wasn’t going to do him any good.
When he got back, Ark found the woman surrounded by even more people, only this time there were more officials around and so they gave them some space.
As he got closer to the woman, the two soldiers gave him a strange look. One of them, a woman with a reserved expression, looked him over from head to toe, taking in his outfit.
"I should have known it would be one of them..."
Her colleague nodded, giving Ark a look of disdain from where he stood.
The woman took a step forward, her hand inching closer to her baton.
"Do you think playing stupid jokes like that is funny?"
Everyone present turned their attention to him, waiting to see how he would react to her accusation.
It was then Ark realized what had happened— his clothes...
He had put on the most comfortable clothes he had, which was obviously something he had worn for a long time.
Thalia had already bought new clothes for him but the baggy stretched out clothes were strangely more comfortable.
Plus he was soaking wet.
’She must think I’m one of the people from the slums...’
’Not exactly wrong, but not exactly right either.’
The woman came close to him and grabbed his arm, pulling him forcefully. Just as she dragged him, she staggered forward, her eyes wide at how impossible it was to move him.
Golden sparks suddenly surrounded his frame and his black leather armour wrapped itself around his body.
The mouths of all those gathered there were left agape as they stared at him in awe.
"Y-you’re a curse bearer?"
Ark sighed.
"Let me talk to her."
"I’m sorry, it’s my mistake." The woman shifted back, obeying his order. It was funny how people changed when in the face of a higher authority.
Just now she was going to take him in without any proof whatsoever, and now she was obediently following his orders.
Ark walked up to the woman who had seen the ghost, she had recovered from the original shock but the fear was still evident in her eyes.
Those crowding around them inched closer to hear what Ark was going to ask her, some were watching with curious eyes, no doubt looking for a story they would narrate.
When you lock people up in an isolated environment for some time, they tend to get bored and cling onto the faintest bit of entertainment they can get.
Such as gossip...
"What did you see?"
The woman looked up to meet his gaze and then her eyebrows knitted together when she met his golden eyes.
It was always like that when anyone saw his eyes for the first time.
"It was big..." The woman began. "A tall shadow with multiple twisted horns and a very large head. When I came, it was laughing, and it’s voice..." Her breathing hitched.
"I could hear it echoing in my head..."
The woman clasped on both sides of her head, fresh tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Don’t worry, you’ll be alright."
Ark tapped her shoulder gently before walking back and addressing the officials.
"Take her to the infirmary, we’ll take a look at the matter."
Trying to get more out of her would be unfair considering her state.
His armour dissipated as the people began trooping out of the hallway until he was left alone in the dark halls.
Ark brought a finger to his chin.
The hall had only one entrance and exit, save for the windows, the only way into the hall would be through the way the woman came, it would have to have passed those who ran here after hearing the scream.
And yet, no one else seemed to have seen it.
The beast she had described was far too large to escape through a small window but that was not the strange part—
Why would it need to escape when it could simply devour her and everyone else?
It was not acting the way apocalypse beasts normally acted, in fact, it was far too different.
Something was not adding up, Ark was sure he was missing a vital piece of information, but what?
There was only one way to find out, he would have to see this so-called ghost for himself to confirm.
Just then a tiny shadow was cast into the room from the corner of the hallway.
There was a sound of raspy breathing.
Ark summoned his dagger, keeping his eyes locked on the shadow.
He took the first step forward, slowing down his breathing to make the least noise possible.
The shadow did not move, whatever was behind the corner stood still, unshaken by approach, but this only made it seem more eerie.
Immediately Ark got to the edge of the wall, he dashed forward, circling the corner in a flash and pressing his dagger against the figure’s neck.
That was when he heard a squeak—
"Help! The ghost had gotten me Help!!"
Ark took a step back and sighed.
It was a young child of about eight, his eyes were closed and he was squealing at the very top of his voice.
"What do you think you’re doing?
Hearing his voice, the boy opened a single eye and watched Ark, then his face brightened with recognition.
"Perverted big bro!"
