Divine Heritage: Only I Can Judge The gods-Chapter 119: Check-up Call
Emma sat on the comfy couch of their apartment, meditating— and by meditating I mean drifting in and out of sleep, when Faye walked up to her and tapped her shoulders.
The girl reduced her voice to a whisper and asked:
"What happened? Ark has been acting weird ever since that day."
Emma turned in Ark’s direction. She did not need to see to know that he was probably sulking at the corner of the room while drinking a bottle of yoghurt.
Between that and possessing corpses, that had been his daily activity ever since they failed to catch the curse bearer involved.
Since his disappearance, there had not been a single case of ghost sighting, and it didn’t even matter if there was one.
The citizens had been told it was due to a malfunction of one of their equipment and labelled it a holographic scare crow used to chase lesser beasts.
As bad as the excuse sounded, the citizens believed it wholeheartedly and fear levels had been slowly settling since then.
Faye nudged Emma when she didn’t get a response on time and the girl sighed before whispering to Faye.
"He lost someone in that incident, the kid he always talks about..."
The girl tried her best not to act surprised because Ark was in the room but she was unable to restrain the gasp that escaped her lips.
She stole a glance at Ark, her eyebrows furrowing slightly and sighed.
Faye could not think of anything she could do for him, she sucked at giving condolences, stuff like that happens when you’ve never had to do such in your life.
Emma was about to go back to her ’meditation’ when her phone buzzed softly.
(Incoming video call from K-I-E-R-A ’stern cat emoji’)
Emma sighed.
"No one wants me to sleep today..."
"Answer, loudspeaker."
There was a short buzzing sound at first before Kiera’s voice came through the device and her live image appeared on the screen.
"Good morning Emma, how are things going on your end?"
At the sound of her voice, Ark turned to face them for a brief moment before returning his gaze to his drink.
"How do you think Ki? You got my message right?"
"I did, I still find it hard to believe though. What could be their motive?"
Emma shrugged.
"That is what we don’t know, the annoying part is that we still haven’t caught them so we are basically just waiting for their next move alongside worrying about the gates that keep spawning."
There was a moment of silence at first before Kiera spoke.
"Maybe they are cultists? Fanatics often don’t have a good reason for their actions."
Emma relaxed deeper into her chair.
"To be honest I don’t really care at this point, I just want the darn apocalypse to be over already so that I can get to my usual life."
Kiera chuckled. "For a battle-head such as yourself to be tired, it must really be overwhelming."
"Enough talk about me, how are things going on over there?"
Just as Emma spoke, another face popped up on the screen. Elise pushed her face towards Kiera’s.
Of course Emma was unaware of this until she spoke.
"What’s up Em!"
"Elise? I thought you would be dead by now!"
The other girl frowned and folded her arms across her chest.
"You seem to forget that I am you senpai—"
"Yeah yeah," Emma replied, waving her off.
They continued to speak for a few more minutes, their topics ranging from the gate spawns, the monsters they had fought and how things were at Thalia’s shelter, before bringing the discussion to a close.
"Alright, I guess we’ll talk in the next group briefing."
There was a long pause before Kiera’s reluctant voice came over the phone.
"I guess we will."
She was about to end the call when Emma chucked.
"Really Ki, can you be any more obvious?"
"What do you mean?"
Emma smiled and lowered her voice to the point only her and Kiera could hear it.
"The real reason you called... is to speak with Ark right?"
There was a short moment of silence.
"Don’t be foolish. Why would I have to go through such roundabout methods?"
Emma stared at the phone blankly.
"Okay then, bye—"
"Wait!"
A mischievous smile spread through Emma’s face.
"I’m listening..."
Kiera cleared her throat, and looked to the side.
"After your suggestion, I believe it would be bad manners to end the call without speaking with him..."
’So she’s going to use me as an excuse huh?’
"Alright, Alright. I’ll hand him the phone."
Emma walked over to where Ark sat and placed the phone on the desk.
"Kiki wants to talk to you."
Keira looked absolutely mortified at the mention of that name, Emma could not see it so she savoured how she imagined it to be while snickering as she walked to her seat.
Ark reluctantly picked up the phone and left the room, only to return a few hours later with Emma’s phone.
Emma was not sure what they had discussed, all she knew was that when Ark returned, although still a bit gloomy, his countenance seemed to have improved slightly.
She waited for when Ark was no longer in the room and called Faye.
"Emma, you called?" Faye asked as she walked into the living room, wearing an apron.
Emma felt something off about her dressing and noticed the smell of ingredients coming from her.
"Are you cooking?"
The girl nodded. "We have some rations that have just been lying around, I felt like trying my hand at cooking."
Emma did not respond but in her mind she was panicking.
She could not see so she could not ascertain how the food would look.
Many times she had been unwillingly used as the taste tester whenever anyone was experimenting a new dish. Some experiences were great while some were straight up horrifying.
Emma shook off those thoughts and handed her phone to Faye.
"How long was my call with Kiera?"
Faye took the phone and tapped a few icons after which she said:
"Three hours. Wow, you guys spoke for three hours?"
Emma did not respond because she was having those thoughts herself. Her call with Kiera could not have been more than an hour.
’What did they discuss for two hours?!’
