Divine Heritage: Only I Can Judge The gods-Chapter 67: The Cost for Growth
Warm rays of the morning sun filtered into the room, illuminating the previously dark interior. It was the break of dawn, a period when the birds were singing and alarms were blaring.
Lying in the room was a boy with pitch black hair and a slender figure that now had some well defined muscles.
The boy lay unmoving for a few minutes and then his fingers twitched, right before his eyes opened, revealing his sharp golden pupils.
Ark stared up at the ceiling for some time, his mind foggy and then everything came to him at once.
He could no longer feel the headache and that crippling thirst was finally gone.
"What happened?"
He sat up straight and placed his hand on his face. He could remember that he left his room and went into the kitchen but after that, everything else became a haze.
He was about to leave the bed when he noticed movement in the corner of his eye. He was not alone...
Sitting on a chair beside him was a woman with short auburn hair, red rimmed glasses and light brown eyes.
On his bedside table was also an array of medical equipment as well as a notepad and pen. It seemed his room had been converted into a clinic of sorts.
The mysterious woman was currently adjusting a transparent tube that had a little liquid moving through it. Ark traced the tube backward to a transparent sachet that was now empty.
When he followed the tube down, he discovered that this tube was sticking into his arm by means of a needle.
He frowned slightly as he turned his attention back to her.
"Who are you?"
The woman glanced at him, adjusting her glasses before she spoke.
"Good morning to you too."
Ark squinted his eyes as he watched the woman, something about her just felt off...
Then it finally came to him. "You are the doctor from the selection."
The woman nodded and walked next to his bed. She reached for his eyes and Ark moved back slightly before stopping.
She pulled his bottom eyelid down slightly and stared at it before writing something down in a notebook
"Yes, the wielder’s center borrowed me for the event."
She walked over to the bench, picking up some cotton wool and dabbing it in a liquid that smelled a lot like beer.
"You arm."
Ark stared at the wool warringly. "What is that?"
"If you want to be a doctor, go to med school."
Ark gave no resistance as she grabbed his hand, removing the needle attached to the drip and disinfecting the area.
Once again she picked up the notepad.
"So you are the squad’s doctor. How come I haven’t seen you around?"
She looked up from her notepad for a brief moment.
"You should know, you were there after all."
At first, Ark could not make sense of what she said, but then it finally came to him.
"The gate incident..."
The woman nodded.
"It was quite a mess, far more injured people than I’ve seen in a while, at least those that were lucky. Thankfully, I finished work three days ago."
Her voice then lowered slightly as she murmured to herself.
"You just happened to collapse the day I returned. I can’t even catch a break—"
A look of surprise appeared on Ark’s face. "Three days ago?"
"Yes, you’ve been asleep for three days. But it’s not too bad really, some people go into comas after experiences like this."
She paused.
"So, what happened?"
"..."
There was no easy way to explain what exactly had transpired. He couldn’t just say, I died multiple times at the hand of a possessed girl in a world that is not real but real at the same time.
He would sound mad, and even if she would believe him, Ark was not willing to reveal those secrets to just anyone.
The woman sighed.
"The secretive type huh? Well, make sure you don’t repeat whatever you did again if you don’t want your brains to melt out of your nose."
"What to you was more mental than physical but thankfully, Emma found you on time." She continued.
Ark made a mental note to thank her later.
"Anyway, you should be fine now, just take proper care of yourself and rest more."
Just as the doctor opened the door to the room, a girl stepped back, giving her room to pass before stepping into the room.
"Kiera?"
She walked over to him, her face appearing impassive as ever. To a normal person, they would think she was just completely stoic, but Ark could see the subtle differences...
The slight worry lines that were barely visible on her face.
"How are you feeling?"
Ark stretched as he rose from bed, his body was aching slightly from prolonged rest and his legs wobbled slightly as though they were still asleep.
"I’m doing great. I guess I just overworked myself a little."
It was a very convenient lie but then again there was some truth mixed within it, what had transpired could indeed be called training... in a way.
Kiera seemed doubtful but she reserved her questions and simply nodded.
"Vivian also told me it wasn’t serious."
"Vivian? Oh, the doctor."
’So that is her name...’
After observing that he indeed doing well, Kiera turned to leave but suddenly paused.
"What do you want for breakfast?"
Ark was confused at first so he smiled nervously. He could not remember the last time someone actually asked him that question, and so he had no answer right at the top of his head.
"Anything you make is fine..."
"Okay."
Kiera left her room, and Ark for finally alone for the first time after waking up.
"I should get a bath."
He had not showered in three days, he was bound to smell terrible.
Ark took off his shirt and tossed it to the bed before he began walking to his bathroom.
That was when a very familiar golden screen appeared causing him to immediately stop.
"It better not be a damn daily—"
He paused as his eyes went over the first words.
