Chapter 71: Echoes of Disaster (2)

The closer they drew to the time of the descent the more tensions rose in the vehicle. Very soon, the apocalypse would begin, bringing the horrors of another world upon them.

Even before the apocalypse, the city was already in shambles. They were taking an emergency route that was strictly military personnel only as they drove past the streets of Lorsine.

Ark stared at what had become of the city through the window, it was pure chaos.

The traffic was terrible, with people blaring their horns while others stepped out of their cars to incite violence.

In front of a shop down the street, a man burst through the building, hugging a bag of groceries as he ran, another man ran out as well, presumably the owner of the shop, a wooden bat in hand as he chased the man down.

A woman was looking around, a panicked look in her eyes as she held onto the hand of her child.

There were military personnel on the street as well, giving directions to the civilians but there was only little they could do.

They could not force them to the shelters, neither could they make the gridlock magically disappear.

Ark summoned his console.

[Apocalypse Descent Imminent]

[City: Lorsine]

[40:00]

He stared at the screen in front of him as he opened his second bottle of yoghurt. They had about forty minutes till the true madness would begin.

Thalia stood up from her chair and walked towards the center of the room, she let out a tired sigh before speaking.

"Alright, listen up. We were in a hurry so I didn’t have time to inform you of the situation."

Ark and the rest of them stared at Thalia, no one willing to miss out on any information that might be vital to their survival.

"This is most likely the first time you have faced an apocalypse, the Archive gave us short notice on this one but usually an apocalypse warning can happen as far as three days before the actual event. But it no longer matters now..."

"The first thing that will happen during the apocalypse is a complete shutdown of the communication network, no mobile phones and definitely no internet. We still don’t know why this happens but it does."

"As a result, all phones within Lorsine would be switched to a local network that operates within the city."

"Another important thing to note is that an invisible barrier will be formed around the city, preventing any entry or exit. Meaning we are stuck here until it ends..."

"The apocalypse will not just be one grand battle, it will come in waves that can span as little as a week and sometimes even as long as a month."

"Each wave we clear counts as a victory for us and each battle will cost us severely."

"The apocalypse is not something we can just wait out, if all waves are not cleared more waves would simply appear until the entire city is overrun and a break happens, spreading the apocalypse to the neighbouring cities like what happened years ago."

She continued to educate them on everything to expect during the apocalypse, how the evacuation to the shelters would be as well as the line of command.

Curse bearers were the highest in terms of rank, followed by high ranking mundane military personnel so currently, Thalia was the highest ranked person in Lorsine by virtue of being the vice commander.

The weight of the entire city was resting on her shoulders.

Thalia then paused and looked at every one of their faces.

"How are you guys feeling?"

It was an unexpected question, Ark always saw her as more of an inconsiderate person than others and yet here she was showing genuine care for her squadron.

Elise rubbed her shoulders.

"Just feeling a little iffy."

Thalia nodded.

Emma who was seated next to her then spoke:

"It’s strange but I’m sort of excited, this was what we were meant to do after all. It’s just that we have such terrible luck, we didn’t even get to visit the other realm...."

Thalia turned her attention to Ethan.

"I’m not exactly feeling any way in particular, I’m just hoping every one of us makes it out alive."

Ark stole a glance at the boy, wondering if he was included in that ’every one.’

Thalia stared at Kiera who simply shrugged and then finally she turned to Ark.

"I’m fine I guess."

His calmness was probably strange to them but Ark had practically died multiple times over just a few days ago, it was going to take more than the apocalypse to scare him.

Ark noticed the ghost of a smile on Thalia’s face at his words, a smile that she hid perfectly well.

"I’m surprised none of you want to dip, that alone is worthy of praise."

"it at least shows that you know how important you all are to this city, you are all newbies but believe me, this city won’t survive three days without you."

She sighed, and then her gaze turned serious.

"Nonetheless, you are still rookies, make sure you are close to either Vivian or me at all times. Don’t wander off on your own unless it is absolutely necessary! Got that?"

They all nodded in agreement.

"We have been training for the past three weeks, make sure you remember everything I taught you." She finished.

Thalia then walked over to where Ark was, causing Ark to cock a brow. He was still trying to figure out what she was doing when his yoghurt disappeared from his hand.

"Hey!"

Thalia completely ignored him and went back to her seat.

"As for the reason we are going to the center... I’m hoping we can borrow a few curse bearers."

She took off the cap off the yogurt and took a large gulp before tossing it back to Ark.

When they finally made it to the center, it was only thirty minutes to the descent. The centre was overflowing with civilians organized in an orderly line as they were slowly being admitted into the center.

It seemed the center was being transformed into a kind of temporary shelter.

There was a military dispatch here as well, in order to keep things in order as well as a few curse bearers already dressed fully in their artifacts.

Immediately they slid the door of the vehicle open, they were met with a very familiar person, someone the rookies knew all too well.

It was a shame that nothing good was going to come out of their meeting.
